The Bills spent $350,000 on Vince Young and got nothing for their money, but they’ve saved money on another quarterback.

Tyler Thigpen, the backup quarterback who surprisingly survived last week’s roster cuts and made Buffalo’s 53-man roster, agreed to a $1 million pay cut to stay with the Bills, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Thigpen’s decision to take less money makes the Bills’ decision to keep him around more understandable. When the Bills traded for Tarvaris Jackson, it appeared that Jackson would be the primary backup to Ryan Fitzpatrick, and that both Young and Thigpen would be on the way out, and that Brad Smith, who’s listed as a quarterback but plays mostly receiver and special teams, would function as the third-string quarterback.

Instead, Thigpen remains along with Fitzpatrick, Jackson and Smith, as the Bills decided Young was the only quarterback they didn’t want.
