Josh Morgan: RG3 is fast as Vick, smart as Brady, throws like Peyton

AP

After a few months of practice with Robert Griffin III, Redskins receiver Josh Morgan is impressed. Very impressed.

Morgan thinks Griffin can be the best running quarterback in the league, the best passer in the league and the best in the league at reading defenses — all at once.

“He’s as fast as Michael Vick but he can make all the throws that Peyton Manning can make and he can make all the reads Tom Brady can make”, Morgan said in an interview with On Tap. “He’s got the whole package.”

In addition to loving the tools Griffin has, Morgan gushed about what it has been like to work with Griffin.

“I love him to death and can’t say enough great things about him,” Morgan said. “He’s not only a great person on the field but he’s a great man off the field, too. He really goes about his business the right way. . . . That’s what’s rare for so many young guys with all that potential and hype and everything. He could have let it go to his head but he came in so humble and so focused you don’t have any choice but to just rock with him.”

If Griffin is close to as great as Morgan thinks he’s going to be, Redskins fans will be happy to rock with RG3 for many years to come.

  1. Let’s all cool our jets a tad. I’m sure we can find a comparison or two to Ryan Leaf or Jammy Russell.

  2. Really? What about his total lack of sensing the blitz? Was apparent in college and obvious against the Colts too. He barely noticed Jerrell Freeman until he was on top of him.

  3. Other potential headlines….

“Josh Morgan says Peyton and Brady are slow”

“Redskins WR Morgan calls Vick and Peyton Stupid”

“Skins Receiver says Vick and Brady have weak arms”

  4. Why are Redskins fans trying to make Roger Griffin seem like Joe Montana? It’s gonna be really tough when he falls on his face this season. I suggest their fans wait until he has actually done something in the NFL before anointing him an elite QB. His failure to produce is gonna hurt really bad. Ease up boys, the season is about to start, and we all will see what Reggie Griffin is made of.

  5. I heard that RG3 is over 7 feet tall. He kills men by the hundreds, and if he were here he’d consume the NFL with fireballs out his eyes and bolts of lighting from his arse!

  6. Josh Morgan has never caught a pass from either of those QBs. Only Vick’s lousy little brother while at VT.

  7. People love this guy for the same reasons they say Vick can’t win. “mobile/running quarterbacks can’t win in this league.” Ok. I’m finished pooping, goodbye.

  8. Ok, I understand that RG3 is very talented and has the potential, but people are already crowing him “the best ever” before he has even played a full regular season. Stop feeding his ego, let him play and earn this praise! No way can you include him in the talks of Brady and Manning, that’s just crazy talk Mr. Morgan.

He’s a guy who plays receiver in the National Football League. And YOU are….?

  10. So he is already by far the best to ever play the game?… Damn why even have a season. Man and I thought you were smart Joshua. Afterall you did take triple the money to go to Washington vs what you were being offered to stay

  11. pump the brakes there, joshua. let this kid play a game in the NFL before saying he has elite tools. the regular season can’t get here fast enough. this hype machine is spiraling out of control on RGIII

  12. Hmm that’s odd… voiceofreasonsays is usually the first to comment on EVERYTHING. So he either got banned AGAIN or mommy caught him playing with his Hulk Hogan wrestling buddy again and grounded him

  13. He won’t be a bust, he’s too talented. But let’s be realistic here, he certainly doesn’t have the best traits of every QB legend to ever play in the NFL. Plus he has the misfortune of playing for the most poorly-run NFL franchise, a handicap that no one could overcome on their own.

  14. Whats with all the negativity people. Everyone here know’s its true!!!! Dont be upset because RGIII and Morgan aren’t on your team. You can cheer for both of them anytime you want. You know you want too!!!!!

  15. “Josh Morgan will not be playing against the Saints after he failed his concussion test this week”

    Mike Shanahan

  16. Rarely if ever do you hear these receivers gush like this over their white qb’s. But get a black one and every black receiver loves him. Same thing happens with coaches. I’ll probably get lots of thumbs down but it’s true.

  17. didn’t he say can be….hello people are so pressed to throw dirt…get a better life so you won’t be so mad…IS VICK, BRADY, OR PETTING GOD! Can there EVER be a better QB in the future…sad. R3alTa1k

  19. I guess the Redskins upgraded from Champions of the Off Season to Champions of the Preseason.
Maybe watch him play 2 regular games before lining up on your knees.

  20. The Redskins and Jets do alot of talking and get alot of media coverage for two 5-11 teams. It may not be what you want to hear but it is what you need to know. Just saying.

While I fundamentally agree with the idea that discussing rookie quarterbacks before the season starts is a waste of time and instigator of needless conflict, I just wanted to point out that, far from “Washington fans declaring Griffin to be the next Montana”, at the time of your comment, there was not one single post agreeing with anything Morgan said.

    _______
Surprisingly, not true. For perhaps the first time in his life, Snyder was able to keep his checkbook in check when signing Morgan. The kid actually accepted less money to play for Washington, both because he grew up in the district, and most of his family still lives there, and because he was excited about the possibility of playing with (and evidently brown-nosing) Robert Griffin.

  24. Sorry guys, I’ve been fishing, BBQing and drinking beer for the past 5 days, away from my computer…

    What did I miss?

    Oh, another RGIII butt-kissing article….

Knew I came back too early….

  25. jason1980 lmao at you giving him two different names, both wrong. Reggie and Roger are definitely not his name, but good attempt at acting like you know his first name.

BTW, How would Josh Morgan know this? Has he ever played with Brady or Peyton? Has he ever raced Vick and Griffin?

  26. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa! Slow down, pump your brakes. You are comparing a rookie to two elite QBs and Vick, now that’s going too far. You are basically saying that he’s the total package, he’s gonna be the best ever once he retires, that leads to my next question, can I have what you’re smoking? I think RG3 will be good but theres no way im gonna put him up in the brady/manning category before he even has a regular season snap under his belt. Hell this is not an discussion until about year 5, don’t get way over your head.

  27. And he knows that how exactly ?! His Qbees were o’sullivan, hill, smith, t.smith, carr…. No manning Brady or Vick !!!

  28. First VJax was promoting his QB and now Morgan promoting RG3 … What do they all have in common …. The color of skin … Seriously who is racist?

  29. @goldoosh36 or should i say voiceofreason or stonecoldsays, u are a man of many names, but keep hyping rg3 up and his fall shall be heard from all over

  30. calm down josh morgan, u made the 53 man roster, u can put the shaft down and go back to the huddle, hmmm morgan, so anybody think he was on captain morgan when he said that stuff in this interview?

  31. Running quarterbacks get hurt almost every season and miss significant time. It’s a proven fact of football. I hope he isn’t like vick who only now is learning that sliding is important.

  32. Why is everyone so upset??? So his teammates and fan base thinks he has all the talent in the world. Isn’t that what they’re suppose to think!

Just be happy for Football Season and stop trolling. If you’re not a Skins fan then why waste your time reading the article.

  33. Well, you have to admit, it’s better than saying that he “cheats worse than Brady, injures his ribs worse than Vick, and looks more like Frankenstein than Peyton Manning,”

And Slugdub, why do you put “Josh Morgan” in quote marks. Are you implying that he’s a fictitious person. Not saying he isn’t, just curious…lol

  34. Wow…All this from team that will finish last in NFC East???

Get a life and win something first…Thats as bad as Panthers predicting SB.

  35. Too bad they won’t be able to get RG3 a solid supporting cast since they gave up so much to get him. At least we know the Rams won’t be building a dynasty given their drafting history.

  36. The Skins D was pretty good last year and RG3 has all of the best attributes , then why does ESPN having them finish 2-14 and pretty much EVERY single pundit having the Skins finish in the East’s basement again ? Could it be that he hasn’t looked too impressive so far ? They’re finishing in last place & they mortgaged there future with RG3 , so he better end up a superstar !

  37. I still don’t know why no one thinks RGIII will lead us to 15-1 this year when it’s clearly bound to happen. Get your heads out of your asses people, RGIII is a little bit better than Joe Montana as a rookie, except much faster and a better all around athlete. I predict about 8 superbowls with the new heir to the RED n’ GOLD throne.

I guess Steve Young, Aaron Rogers, Joe Theisman, et al won their super bowls in a dream I had. Whats funny is how the mob mentality leads some of you to agree with this idiotic comment. Take out the word mobile and maybe you will have a point.

  39. It’s funny that the only place you can find an”expert” that doesn’t rave about RGIII is on message boards, with 99% of these “experts” being Redskins haters. If you can find one respected (or even marginal) published analyst that thinks Griffin sucks, please post the link. Thought so. Bottom line is, NOBODY knows for sure how good or bad he will be, but there is a hell of a lot to like, and you have to dig pretty far to find something not to like. Funny thing is, you can say the same about Andrew Luck, but I don’t see anyone trashing him. Is it because RGIII does more commercials? Is it because he has been a “can’t-miss prospect” for one season less than Luck? Or is it, and I hate to say this, but, because he’s black? I never wanted to go there but when some fool says he is more like Tarvaris Jackson than Manning or Brady, what else can you take from that? Griffin has just one thing in common with Jackson, that he’s a black QB. He’s not a running QB, folks, he’s a legit QB who can run. Keep hating and downvoting, we love being taken lightly.

  40. Haha. The hate towards my QB is incredible. If even players in the NFL agree with me about Robert Griffin, then what should that tell you about my football knowledge…I said it before and will say it again, RGIII and the Redskins in this era of NFL football will be the equivalent to Mike Jordan and the Bulls in the 90s NBA. Larger than football, transcendent figure across the world. It must kill division rivals, Niner fans, Patriot fans that Robert is on his way to becoming the greatest QB to ever play in the near 100 year history of professional football all while representing a historic franchise like the Washington Redskins. This fanbase more than any other in football deserve to watch greatness because we are the most passionate and loyal group and no one comes close. The rest of you, well your tears will taste sweet to me when it all comes to pass and he’s a legend with many Superbowl rings. HTTR.

  41. Josh Morgan … in my opinion is the best QB talent evaluator in the history of the NFL … Trust everything he says.

  42. I mean really, what do you expect him to say he’s coming from San Francisco where he’s used to passes from Alex Smith!!!

  43. Josh Morgan was an underrated pick up..He could be special…He made some great plays as a Niner..Class act.

  44. Josh, RG3’s girlfriend would like you to remove those nuts from your mouth.

I actually liked Morgan last season, and was hoping the Ravens would sign him, now I am glad they didn’t. This guy has an issue with some powerful drugs.

  45. Josh Morgan went on to say: Hey man, don’t blame me if he doesn’t live up to the hype. All I did was point out how great he is. If he bombs then it’s his own damn fault. No….. I couldn’t possibly have been wrong about how great he was.

  46. “He’s as fast as Michael Vick but he can make all the throws that Peyton Manning can make and he can make all the reads Tom Brady can make”
    ——————————————–
Does he also float like a butterfly and sting like a bee?

  47. Not hating on RG3, but Come on now, at this point I guess we should just open up his spot at Canton, and all this before he has played one down in a regular season NFL game.

  48. Josh Morgan not on Philly’s roster is a very good thing. DJac is all a bad quote can handle. RG3 will be given his chance to back the talk this upcoming season.

  49. terig: I think you are way to kind to vick. I don’t have any idea why anyone would let him play. If I were a defensive player I’d make sure that he got what was coming to him. Then we wouldn’t have to read his name again. Besides, he’s a terrible QB, even if you a lowlife like him.

…comparing a rookie to two elite QBs and Vick…

    ——————————————————

Nicely put. Two elite qb’s and a Vick-like one.

The next successful, HOF-caliber “scrambling” QB will also be the first one. The list goes something like:

    Randal Cunningham
    Steve Young*
    Kordel “Slash” Stewart
    Rich Gannon*
    Donovan McNabb*
    Daunte Colpepper
    Mike Vick circa ATL
    Jamarcus Russell
    Tarvaris Jackson
    Ben Roethlisberger*
    Vince Young
    —————————-
    Aaron Rogers*
    Mike Vick circa PHI
    Cam Newton*
    Tyrell Pryor
    RGIII
    Russell Wilson

    * = Not really “Vick-like”, though noted for picking up yards on the ground. Denotes “makes plays with his legs” type pocket passers, as opposed to genuinely “run first” guys.

It’s interesting to me that the penultimate Vick-type, Vick himself, criticizes himself frequently for not staying home in the pocket more. Maybe Andy Reed and Jim Mora Jr read him the list?

Under Shannahan, RGIII is gonna be asked to play the Jake Plummer/Jay Cutler role, in terms of lots of bootlegs and rollouts and PA off of the above. His neotraditional college “spread” offense pedigree will be no help there. Tell me how well he’ll adapt and I’ll tell you how well he’ll do in WAS (under Shannahan, anyway).

  55. aren’t you people some of the same people who label Cam Newton a bust before his first game? He can’t throw, all he does is run, etc, etc………. RG3s play will decide what type of QB his is and will be. Gosh I thought you people would have learned after Cam.

  56. Haha I can’t say I agree with all of what Morgan said, but some of you just sound ridiculous. First, RG3 isn’t a “running” qb like Vick. Vick looks to run first chance he gets, RG3 stands in the pocket and runs if the pocket breaks down, but obviously all you idiots haven’t paved attention to that in the preseason and all their otas. And Rg3 is faster then Vick, even in his prime.4.34 40 from RG3 and Vick had a 4.39 when he was drafted. I’m not saying he is Brady or Manning but he also is no where near a Leaf or Russell. And for you people asking who is josh Morgan? Well obviously you don’t watch football. Oh and I’m sure he would tell you I’m an NFL wide receiver who makes millions, talk trash when you make his money punks.

  57. I do worry- there’s been soooo much hype…If Landry Jones and Matt Barkley came out instead of returning to school for their senior year, would he have been the 4th QB of the draft, and maybe not so over-hyped?? Would the Redskins have even picked him, and not one of those others?

As a Redskins fan, I do hope he lives up to the hype, but we’ve certainly seen our share of busts all over the NFL at the QB position in the last 20 years, including Heath Shuler-Who would think we’d be saying, “Aw, we should have picked Trent Dilfer!”????

Therefore, I’ll hold my breath, watch, and hope

  58. What did I miss?

    Oh, another RGIII butt-kissing article….

Knew I came back too early….
    _______

How does this article kiss Griffin’s butt in any way? The article is about a Washington receiver kissing Griffin’s butt. The article itself, however, clearly casts both Morgan and Griffin in a ridiculous light.

While it would be great for the Redskins if Morgan’s assessment is correct, nobody in Washington comes out of the article looking good.

I don’t want to imply any bias on the part of PFT, nor do I want to bring Andrew Luck into this discussion at all. But let’s compare the last article on PFT about Luck to the last article on PFT about Griffin (this one).

The last article about Luck discussed the kid’s comments at a press conference in which he called himself a boneheaded rookie, and looked like the smart, humble kid he is. In this article we learn about a Redskins receiver gushing about his quarterback to the point where they both look ridiculous.

The point is that even if Griffin does have the arm of Peyton, the mind of Brady, the legs of Vick, the claws of Wolverine, and whatever else, these qualities are effectively diminished by Morgan’s over-the-top praise.

    Throws like a girl.
    Runs like a Chevrolet Vega.
As smart as an Eggo Waffle.
    _______
laserw, can you go away please? Everyone knows you’re not a Redskins fan. You’re probably just peytonsneck writing under another name. Every post you’ve ever written on this site follows the formula of “I’m a diehard Redskins fan, but I think Robert Griffin is the worst quarterback to ever pick up a football and I hope he and his family die in horrible car crash.”

While Washington fans being cautious in their praise of the Third makes sense, simply declaring your undying hatred of the kid is bizarre.

A quote like: “I’m a Redskins fan and I hope Griffin is as good as he cracked up to be, although I am worried about this particular aspect of his game…” makes sense. Some might not agree, but it is a justifiable and understandable stance.

On the other hand, when every single one of your posts fervently declares that Griffin does not possess the skills to play high school quarterback you simply come off as an asinine annoyance.

  60. His mom said that too, so that makes two people on the planet who believe that. More than I have anyway. Good work Griffin! Oh, and rookie nicknames should be banned until they at least do something impressive.

  61. zn0rseman says:

RG3 wore a clown suit like Ronald McDonald’s to the draft.
    ______
What a totally bizarre thing to say. First of all he didn’t. Google it if you want, but he wore a very standard light blue suit.

Secondly, even if he wore Heath Ledger’s Joker suit from Batman, does it matter? The second overall pick in the NFL draft, especially one who cost two extra first rounders, should be allowed to wear whatever he wants.

I know this was a tremendous nonsequiter, but I was just really surprised to find that that when I saw the post just now, it had two thumbs up and no thumbs down despite being simply untrue.

I don’t want to go on and on, I think that a blatantly false personal attack about completely inconsequential details receiving two thumbs up is emblematic of the larger point that people really seem to be going out of their way to hate Robert Griffin.

I’m by no means a Redskins fan, and while we can talk about Griffin’s potential as a football player all day; as an individual, Griffin has clearly delivered.

Griffin III is a very bright kid, he’s humble, a good leader, and just a genuinely likable guy. It’s difficult to understand where all the hatred and personal attacks have suddenly sprang up from. Even if you don’t like Griffin personally, at least admit that the sudden firestorm of hatred is weird.

  62. The Redskins are going to to shock some folks this year straight up and down like 6 o’clock. I’ve watched every pre-season game and I see something really scary brewing with this team. Shanny has had a couple seasons to build the team his way and get rid of people that didn’t fit his system. I haven’t been this excited about a new season since the early 90’s. Can’t wait for Sunday, Go Skins!

  63. I’m not 100% sure about this, but I don’t think Morgan has ever played with Manning or Brady….so how would he know?

I guess it was just something else for the Media to run with.

  64. I may be wrong, but it seems to me that we should wait and see how Griffin does over at least a few years before we anoint him the next Football God. From what I’ve seen and heard, Griffin feels the same way. Let the results speak for themselves. For now, he’s just another rookie QB with a lot of pressure on him to revive a franchise that hasn’t done much on the field lately.

  65. Very profound and insightful comments Mr. Morgan. Your eloquent command of the English language has me in full agreement with your assessment of Robert Griffin the Third. Hail!

  66. RG3’s ceiling in those three respects is certainly on par with those athletes, but he’s nowhere near there yet. Plus, there’s the fourth factor – clutch. The NFL is a different game, pressure is higher. Does RG3 have ice in his veins?

  67. Only one game, but the comments don’t seem quite as ridiculous this morning, do they. Griffin played as well as any QB in the league on the opening weekend. That doesn’t mean he’s ready for the Hall of Fame just yet, but it does indicate that there’s a lot more to his game than just hype.

  68. an nfl wr referred to Brady as “smart” in a superlative context?

    Well, color me confused.

All I’ve read on here is how Brady is over-rated, wouldn’t be anywhere without Belichick, is a product of the system, owned by Eli and is a sissy girlie man who complains as much or more than Dwayne-cry-baby-Wade during games.

Then I see he is in the top 5 of the NFL top 100, as voted by OTHER NFL players.

Guess we simply have to consider the sources, geography and agendas when forming opinions of NFL players…
I’ll take the word of fellow NFL players every time..
    Sorry haters….you lose

  69. I’m a diehard Pats/ Brady fan, and a Vick and Manning admirer. I don’t hate anyone. I appreciate talent anywhere. Why would anyone hate on RG3??? The kid looks amazing. Morgan sounds like a nitwit for comparing him to two legends who are both top 10 if not 2 or 3 of all time, although from what I’ve seen it’s possible… given at least 5 or 6 years to reassess him. But I’d give much more credence to the wild accolades of being as smart as Brady and being able to thread a friggin needle like Manning… if John Gruden said them.
