The Jets’ “ground and pound” offense will include a surprise when it comes to pounding out the remaining yards needed for a first down when the orange stick shows 3.

Bilal Powell has won the job as third-down tailback over Joe McKnight, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.

Per Mehta, McKnight and Powell opened camp in an open competition for the job. Powell’s skills in pass protection contributed to the eventual gap.

McKnight is still expected to be a major contributor. However, he’s dealing with a hamstring pull, and his availability for Sunday’s game against the Bills is unknown.
