Tackle Jared Gaither’s back injury has created an uncertain situation for the Chargers offensive line.
They made a move to give themselves a little bit more certainty on Tuesday. The Chargers announced that they have signed offensive lineman Reggie Wells as a free agent.
Wells was one of the final cuts in Packers camp last month, a few weeks after they signed him to the roster. Wells originally entered the league as a sixth-round pick of the Cardinals in 2003 and started 90 games for them over seven years. He spent 2010 with the Eagles and 2011 with the Panthers.
“The fact that we carried eight linemen originally, people knew we were looking for another one,” said General Manager A.J. Smith in a statement released by the team. “And we found the right guy, and that’s Reggie. With the Jared Gaither situation unknown and a day-to-day process, we decided to make the move at this point in time. We will put him in at the guard and tackle positions, and head coach Norv Turner will decide exactly where he fits in for us.”
The Chargers line help up well on Monday night with undrafted rookie Mike Harris replacing Gaither in the starting lineup. Wells gives the team another option in case that doesn’t hold up over the coming weeks.
