Former NFL receiver Sam Hurd, who remains jailed while he awaits trial on federal drug charges, could soon be pleading guilty.
Per KENS5.com, a document suggesting that Hurd will plead guilty to possession with intent to distribute cocaine was uploaded onto a federal website. But the document suggests that Hurd will face 10 years to life in prison and be fined up to $10 million, and it’s never been suggested or reported or mentioned that Hurd would even be facing such stiff penalties.
Moreover, the Associated Press reports that Hurd’s lawyer has explained that the terms are still being negotiated. Surely fueling the talks is the fact that Hurd’s codefendant, Toby Lujan, pleaded guilty last month and agreed to testify against Hurd.
Either way, it appears that a deal is possible. If it’s going to happen, it needs to happen fairly soon, given that trial is set to begin on October 9.
Hurd was arrested last December at a Chicago-area steakhouse after receiving a kilogram of cocaine from an informant and an undercover officer. He played for the Cowboys and the Bears.
