League pays replacements $344,000 to not work

350x-1

The resolution of football’s latest lockout has plenty of footnotes. The latest comes from Peter King, who’ll be using both feet on Saturday to run a half marathon. (You can contribute to the cause Peter is supporting -- the Steve Gleason Initiative Foundation.)

Per King, the NFL will pay the replacements referees a whopping $344,000 to not work this weekend.

Given that the labor dispute with the regular officials didn’t end until late Wednesday, with a crew of Foot Locker employees presumably already in Baltimore for Thursday night’s game, those folks deserved to be paid. And then it became fair to pay the rest of them.

The final-week buyout of the replacements pales in comparison to the $2.5 million the locked-out officials received for lost wages from the preseason through the first three weeks of the regular season.
