When Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes got hurt in the fourth quarter of the Jets’ 34-0 loss to the 49ers, it looked like he had suffered a knee injury.

As it turns out, it was his left foot that betrayed him as he tried to cut upfield after catching a pass from Mark Sanchez. Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reported that x-rays on Holmes’ left foot were negative, although he cautions that those results don’t rule out ligament damage that will keep Holmes on the shelf. Mehta also reports that Holmes left MetLife Stadium on a golf cart with his foot in a walking boot. The team has confirmed that Holmes suffered a foot injury.

The injury was just one drop in a bucket filled with misery for the Jets, but the news is a bit more hopeful than it appeared to be when Holmes first got injured. The way the injury happened conjured up memories of cornerback Darrelle Revis’ torn ACL, so the fact that the team isn’t facing a total replay is somewhat encouraging.

The Jets offense hasn’t been productive with Holmes on the field over the last three weeks which makes you wonder just what they’ll do if their top receiver winds up missing an extended period of time.
