The Jets lost their best defensive player for the season last weekend when cornerback Darrelle Revis tore his ACL while trying to make a tackle.
No one made contact with Revis on the play, which likely meant for an unhappy case of déjà vu for everyone in the organization in the fourth quarter on Sunday. Wide receiver Santonio Holmes made a catch and planted in order to make a cut, but crumpled to the ground before taking another step. It looked like his left knee gave out on him and it looked a lot like the litany of other serious knee injuries suffered by NFL players without any contact.
Adding insult to injury, Holmes dropped the ball on his way to the ground and 49ers cornerback Carlos Rogers returned it for a touchdown. While there were no signs the Jets offense had a comeback from 17-0 in them this afternoon, a change in the score to 24-0 means that it is now safe to go about other business if you were waiting on the result of this game.
The Jets defense hasn’t been able to stop the run and the 49ers defense has now forced four turnovers. The only drama left in Jersey is whether they will finish out the shutout and how bad Holmes’ knee injury turns out to be.
UPDATE 5:11 p.m. ET: Holmes’ injury turned out to be to his left foot and not his knee. X-rays were reportedly negative.
