The Redskins put together a pretty sharp first drive against the Giants, but it wound up with a pair of unhappy developments.
After taking the ball from their own five all the way to the Giants’ two-yard line, the Redskins couldn’t punch the ball in for a touchdown. They grabbed a 3-0 lead late in the first quarter after Robert Griffin III was forced to throw the ball away on third down. The 16-play drive was still an impressive start for the Redskins offense, with Morris picking up 46 yards on 10 carries.
The Redskins thought they had a touchdown earlier on a 35-yard pass from Griffin to Josh Morgan, but it was wiped out by an illegal shift penalty called on tight end Fred Davis. The news would get worse for Davis. He limped off the field with the help of trainers after an incompletion to Niles Paul in the end zone. He appeared to hurt his left leg and was putting no weight on it while heading for an examination on the sideline. He’s gone back to the locker room.
Paul and Logan Paulsen will pick up the slack until Davis returns, be it this week or in the future.
UPDATE 1:38 p.m. ET: It will be the future. The Redskins have announced an Achilles injury for Davis and he is out for the rest of the game. Losing Davis, the team’s leading receiver, is going to make a win in the Meadowlands much more difficult for the Redskins.
