Giants land final blow in thriller against Redskins

Getty Images

If every NFC East game involving Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III is going to be like this, it’ll be hard for any division to wrest away the crown of most exciting.

Griffin’s divisional debut featured two touchdowns in the final 1:38 seconds with the Giants coming out on top 27-23 after a 77-yard touchdown by Victor Cruz and a fourth Redskins turnover of the day. Wide receiver Santana Moss, who caught a beautifully thrown ball from Griffin to briefly put the Redskins in the lead before Eli Manning threw one just as pretty to Cruz, fumbled after catching a Griffin pass for a first down and the Giants recovered to ice the victory.

The Redskins had only turned the ball over five times this season heading into Sunday and their inability to hold onto the ball cost them tremendously. They turned the ball over on three straight possessions in the second half, stalling an offense that rolled over the Giants in the first half. They also shot themselves in the foot with a leg whip penalty (they had a touchdown-erasing penalty in the first half as well) by tackle Tyler Polumbus that wiped out a long Alfred Morris run into the red zone. Morris fumbled on the next play, touching off the turnover string and opening up a chance for the Giants to pull into a more comfortable lead.

They couldn’t get more than seven points, however, as Manning threw a pair of picks that allowed the Redskins more chances. The Giants defense did their bit, including another strong showing from the pass rush and a much improved job against the run in the second half. The offense’s inability to capitalize and the insistence on throwing instead of running down the clock kept the Redskins alive and that looked like it might bite the Giants in the rear when Griffin converted a fourth-and-10 (the third fourth-down coversion of the day for the Redskins) by eluding Jason Pierre-Paul and firing a strike to Logan Paulsen to set up Moss’ touchdown.

Griffin’s two turnovers sting, but his overall game was still a strong one. You could say the same for Manning. He wasn’t at his best for much of the game, but he delivered the pass he needed to make and got his team to 5-2 in what should be the first of several good battles between these two quarterbacks.

  1. Great game to watch, the phantom leg whip call really hurt the Redskins. RG3 has made me look stupid for the 7th week in a row, I admit he’s better than Luck and wish my team had drafted him instead.

  2. Great game.. I’m glad Eli is the QB of my favorite team, but jeez.. RG3 is gonna cause problems for the NFC East for years to come

  3. Well, I guess that sweep by the Redskins will not be happening this year as predicted by that annoying troll, The Voice of Reason/Logical Thinker. Have fun in the basement!!! Feels great to see you there

  4. Crazy and very exciting game. Mostly clean and competitive. As a skins fan, I viewed this game as a test of whether they are legit this year and I came away feeling positive despite the last minute breakdown. Obviously, two many turnovers and penalties.

  5. I hope this game puts all the is RG3 worth all those draft picks bickering to rest.

The new question is are the Redskins good enough for a player his caliber? Huh?

  6. Eli = MONEY inside 2 minutes… cash MONEY. FG before the half to tie, and the Cruz-missile to win it.

When you’re low on time and need a score, right now you can’t ask for anyone at the controls except Eli Manning.

  7. I was one of the loudest skeptics of RG III but dude is the real deal. He proved it today even in a losing effort. And when will Santana Moss be out of a job? The guy is TERRIBLE

  8. Good game as the giants were outplayed by the skins but experience proved the skins downfall. A lot of football left and we’ll be breathing down the G men’s back. Before the season ends.

  9. Unbelievable game. Eli was pretty shaky and the offensive play calling was horrific; but you knew when he got the ball back with 1:30 he was going to drive the length of the field. He may not be the best, but he’s the most clutch quarterback in the NFL.

You guys drafted the right guy.. RG3 is the real deal but all that running will catch up to him.. He will be injured a lot in his career..

  11. Good game Gmen; we ain’t got to be ashamed down here in the DMV we fought like a much more mature team being that we’re still babies: HTTR

  12. Giants fan here, but Skins fans have every right to feel positive about the future (pains me to say). Both RG3 and Morris are the real deal. Thoroughly impressive by both. Some of the fake handoffs were like magic acts.

Speaking of magic act, another 4th Q win by Eli. Not his best day, but he did enough to erase the bad memories of the 2 horrible picks he threw. Not bad routes, just bad throws by him.

  13. Awesome game. Not a fan of either team but enjoyed the show. RGIII – Reminded me of a rookie NBA player hanging 50 points in a loss. Well – time will tell if he’s that good.

  14. The refs were wearing blue today. Even Aikman said the illegal motion and “leg whip” was BS. There’s your ballgame right there.

  15. Id really like to know what Madieu Williams was thinking on that td pass to Cruz. Why you arent covering over the top up 3 w/ 1 minute left is truly beyond me…and why Haslett (as DC) didnt implore his safeties to stay over the top is also beyond me…actually, the fact that Williams & Haslett still have jobs is beyond me…

  16. Are giants fans seriously taking trash after that game? Surethe redskins may be going back to the basement, but nyg came within one big play of losing ti that perennial joke basement team. any giants fan who says they weren’t worried by that game is a liar. And anybody who says theredskins weren’t impressive simply doesn’t understand football.

  17. Hochuli is terrible. Giants holding all day. The replacements were horrible, but the regulars are still bad.

  18. Washington outplayed the Giants except for the turnovers. Just hold onto the ball and you win the game. But Washington has a lot to be excited about going forward, not just with RGIII but also with Alfred Morris. It won’t be long until happy times are back in D.C.

  19. I give Eli all the credit in the world for being “money” inside of 2 minutes but that was also on the DC and a horrible secondary. How does your safety suck up and play tight when you KNOW they are going to throw the ball?

also, the refs really screwed us this game. I know, I know, its excuses but the leg whip, the touchdown that no ref could have seen, the offsides on the kickoff, the illegal motion, those killed us.

  20. Well one thing is for certain, Voiceofreason/logicalthinker or whatever his next screename will be will not show up for a week or so.

Oh and well played game Redskins, this game could’ve easily gone either way. You should be proud of your team.

  21. Rg3 …can he endure this physical game playing like a mike Vic ? Like the man posted above, ” time will tell ” ?

  22. RG3 is awesome, but I have a question…

How many running quarterbacks have won the Superbowl?

Santana Moss’s taunting after his TD reception bit him in the end. Bad karma.

    _____________

Yeah, cause the Giants never taunt or talk or dance after sacks or anything….

  24. Let’s hear the Giants fans talk about how great they are…. Giants are good but got bailed out again… 2 scores taken off the board for the Skins on 2 garbage penalties… plus the Bradshaw TD was a ridiculous call, he was clearly down wayyyy before the goal line…

Skins all of a sudden got a case of the dropsies, 4 turnovers and STILL got nearly 500 yards…. Giants got run over in their own house today (250 yards rushing) and can thank Hochuli’s crew for the “leg whip” and illegal motion calls that kept them in the game.

Not worried… if the Skins don’t have about 7 starters out with injury that’s a W.

Enjoy the victory while you can because it’s not going to be that way for long. The ‘Skins are due for a reign of NFC East dominance. RGIII hung two TDs and 80+ rushing yards on two All-Pro DEs with nothing more than, at best, second-string receivers.

Giants beat the ‘Skins fair and square today, so enjoy the thrill while you can. I’m going to love to see your comments next year.

  26. peytonsneckl8..Great game to watch, the phantom leg whip call really hurt the Redskins. RG3 has made me look stupid for the 7th week in a row, I admit he’s better than Luck and wish my team had drafted him instead.

nice try clown, but u can imitate the name, but we all know Luck is better than IRG3

  27. The Giants played better on Defense than the Skins did but the refs helped the Giants on the BS penalties on the Skins TD and the non-existant “leg whip” penalty that proved to be a turning point in the game.

  28. There were alot of bad calls and missed calls as well. So what, that is part of the game. It sucks to still see this with the “regular” referees BUT it still is part of the game.

It all comes down to the fact that the Giants made 1 more big play than the Redskins did.

Both teams have a reason to be happy, the Giants for the win and the Redskins for the continued growth of their offense.

JPP had a sack, but he shouldn’t be talking smack to RGIII any time soon, all I have to say if he does is 4th and 10. He was 1 on 1 with Griffin and got his ankles broken while Griffin was throwing a nice long completion to a 3rd string TE.

  29. This game shouldn’t have been as close. The giants blew opportunities and had dumb turnovers themselves. The defensive gameplan was too passive and reactive. The read options and rushes take time to develop. I would’ve rathered they attacked more. But they got the win so I should shut my mouth.

  30. Skins fans sound like jets fans after losing close to pats. You should be worried. You’ll never play a better game and we’ll never play worse yet you still lost. Not impressed by rgiii. All hype. Nowhere near as mobile in the pocket as qbs like Vick. He’s a rb that can throw. Great. You have an accurate tebow.

Anyway, to anyone that still doubts RG3 is a real QB or has the slightest notion to label him as just another running QB….YOU my friend don’t know football !!!!! HTTR

  32. Griffin hasnt proven himself as a pro QB…hes proven he can run an option offense that has 0 staying power in the NFL. So let me toss the phrase back at delusional Skins fans – “enjoy it while it lasts!”

    Anyone remember Cam Newton?

  33. Our station just tuned in to the end and I saw the pass and the moron defensive back who stood there and watched as Cruz caught the ball and raced to the endzone.

I think either the defensive coach should be fired immediately or the idiot safety should be benched like forever.

Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to size things up: you’ve got them deep in there zone, must have a TD to win and 1.31 on the clock. Gee ya think a long pass play down field may possibly be in their bag of tricks????????

My instructions to the safeties, play deep and if you have to break a leg do NOT let the receiver get by you. A penalty is not a TD.

  34. Let me guess. I’ll take a big stab not being able to see the Skins much. Madiu Williams has been around the world a few times?

This guy is dumber than a box of rocks. He costs his team a loss. In the end it was his play that costs the team since they had the game won and he let the Giants beat him.

The Giants didn’t beat the skins, they beat Williams.

  35. From Hero to Goat in less than 5 minutes. LOL @ Santana Moss! Good game by the 4Skins, RG3 is going to be trouble for a long time. Get that boy some WR help, get the defense healthy, and after another year under his belt and this team will be for real. Too bad 1 stupid Redskins troll makes it bad for the rest of the fans..

  36. That’s right keep disrespecting us…When the Giants win, I hear nothing but excuses from their opponents and fans. Refs suck, our players played poorly, the coaches suck…etc…Maybe it because the “Lucky” Giants have a hand in making your team under perform that day….We won, you lost.

  37. I’m very bummed out that my ‘Skins lost. However, the NFC East, with both RG3 and Eli, are now officially again the most exciting division in football.

  38. Can some one please explain the whole IRG3 thing . i thought it was for emergency room but that would be ERG3 and if thats what you mean your an idiot .

  39. @inthearex

You are right, it shouldn’t have been close. The Skins should of won going away, but they beat themselves.

The Skins moved at will up and down the field on the Giants in the 1st half. Simple mistakes are the only things that stopped the Skins from going into halftime with at least 17 points.

In the end though, the Skins lost, and deserved to. At least 4 drives were stopped by dumb penalties or turnovers. Can’t have that.

Silver lining is the Skins are a young team, despite what someone said earlier who clearly doesn’t know the Skins roster all that well. 3-4 but have been in every loss this year. Add to it the injuries mounting, and a lot of young players will get needed playing experience.

Also, someone asked earlier if a running QB had ever won the SB. Depends on the definition of running QB. Steve Young and John Elway were known for the running abilities. Anyway, if a half black man can be President of the US, then a “running QB” can win the SB.

  40. that’s what a defense with a cap hit looks like. Gmen owner gets the game ball for his off the field antics. Most have a ton of faith in his team.

  41. Hello???? This is the NFL, NOT college football. There are no points for moral victories. You are what you’re record is.

Congratulations on making the most ignorant post of the day. You probably don’t realize that RG3 is #3 in the league in passer rating (higher than Eli) and is the most accurate QB in the league (71%)? Was that last perfect throw to Moss to take the lead a run?

This is why no one respects the Giants and their fans. Fans and the team talk more ish than anybody else and most of them have no idea about football. We’ll never have a better game??? Were the #1 rushing offense in the NFL and have one of the top 5 offenses. The only reason this one was close was that we had 4 turnovers (had 5 up until this point) and Hochuli’s crew took 10 Skins points off the board on garbage penalties. Your vaunted Giants D got steamrolled in your own house to the tune of 250 rushing yards and 500 yards total in spite of the Skins having 4 turnovers and about 7 starters on the sideline with injury.

Even your boy Tuck said he’s mad that RG3 is in the NFCeast.

Count your blessings and if you want respect, be thankful and classy that you escaped with a win when you got outplayed.

  43. Congratulations to the classy Giants fans here who are happy but don’t try to get overhyped or rub it in. You are the reigning world champs and you have an elite clutch QB.

But to justintuckrule and any other gloaters/haters, I guess I should congratulate you for the first Giants victory over the Skins since the 2010 season. But don’t fool yourselves. Your margin of victory was just one point for each turnover the Redskins committed. After we lost one of our best offensive players. Let’s admit – this was a close game against two good, well matched teams and we will see you again shortly. Looking forward to it.

  45. Huge Big Blue fan here….well we pulled another one out of where the sun don’t shine….phew…that was a real nail biter!

I’m more diappointed with Gilbride relying too much on the pass (2-1 pass versus run for our Offense) especially when it was obvious that Eli was a little off today (of course until late in the 4th Q).

Shout out to ‘Skins fans….great game, RGIII was a GREAT CHOICE…how does it feel to have the Rookie of the Year on your squad?!

Also, if the NFL had most improved team award…you gotta vote for the DC guys!

  46. justintuckrule just mad hes gonna have to watch rg3 crush the NFCE for the next 12 years.

Skins had the following guys out: Davis , Helu, J. Brown, Garcon, Orakpo, Carriker, Merriweather, Sundberg, Nield, Jordan Bernstine, Minnifield.

Turned the ball over 4 times.

Had 10 points taken off the board on questionable (at best) calls.

Still racked up 500 yards. And it still took another Giants miracle to bail them out.

    Keep talkin….

  47. Giants win.

No, you should just stick to congratulating without conditions attached. Especially since you were babbling all week.

  50. What are you talking about wethog? We moved the ball at will also so that’s a wash. This was Eli’s worst game this year. On top of the pics he also missed a wide open Cruz in the end one and had to settle for three. Eli was horrible and we still won. Trust me if our defensive gameplan was more aggressive this wouldn’t have been close.

The Giants have MORE starters out you dolt. Your POINT?!??!?!

That defense forced those drops and fumbles. The call on Hankerson was right. Learn the rules. Where this esoteric other “TD that was taken off the board” occurred, but if Gilbride isn’t huffing elmer’s glue, Giants win going away.

  52. @skins23 – like I said…you played your best game you’ll ever play against us and you still LOST.

  53. @skins23 – who is nield? The only nield I know is what Eli took to run out the clock on your team.

  54. Fun game to watch. Typical back and forth NFC East battle. As a Giants fan, I’m not looking forward to facing Griffin twice a year for the next decade plus. He’s very talented and he has a bright future ahead of him.

To the Skins fans on here crying about injuries and the refereeing, and blaming that on why you lost, just stop. You’re embarrassing yourselves. Every team has injuries. The Giants have plenty of them too. It’s not an excuse for losing. You turned the ball over four times. That’s why you lost. You let Victor Cruz run free for a 77 yd TD at the end of the game. That’s why you lost.

It was a close, hard fought game. The Giants made one more play when it counted most. That’s what it boils down to. Look forward to the next game on 12/3 in DC, under the bright lights on Monday Night Football.

But my point is simply this – two good teams. Good game. Congratulations on the win, don’t get overblown with it, and see you later in the season.

  56. First off who has it better then the Giants

    NO ONE

Now Rob is a great young player and it was a close game.

A bit early in his playing days to crown him king of the East.

He will be a a project but as the DC’s have more film they will figure him out.

Also as all the 4skinfans are making excuses what would your excuse have been if Eli had a good game instead of one of his worst in a long time.

Bottom line when the game is on the line champions win and they did.

And perhaps you skins fans should praise the one who kept you in the game his name is not bob but Morris that was most of your offence

    ____________________________

That would be Chris Nield who dominated the Giants week 1 last season.

Pretty sure Giants got about 4 starters back from injury today so not sure what you guys are talkin about.

Anyways I’m not pointing to injuries for the loss but the Giants fans talking when they got handed the game need to be taken down a notch.

  59. seriously, if you really think that RG3 is just an “RB that can throw” and “well never play a better game against you”, then you’re just showing your ignorance.

RG3 is the #3 rated passer in the league and the most accurate % passer in the league, 7 games into his career.

And that’s not taking into account what he can do with his legs.

And the 250 running yards we rolled over the Giants today was not a fluke.

We dominated the Giants twice last year and were pretty close to winning today. I don’t know how it was “the best were ever going to play ” considering we turned the ball over 4 times and had 10 points taken off the board.

  60. Stop with the calls for people to “take it down a notch” and “overblowing” an important win. What, we’re supposed to yawn and go to bed? Not a single person is making it out to be more than what it is. It did not clinch the NFC East and was not Week 17 or a Divisional Playoff game, nor has any comment posted here come off as such.

People who brag and talk trash all week always resort to that when their boasts fall short. SF fans did it last week also.

  61. Nothing JP said was trash talk. He was joking, and backed it up. Other than the miracle 4th down, Griffin got nothing on JP (those big plays came when Osi was at RE). The fullback DID catch JP crashing down on that 15 yard run late, though.

  62. The Skins had their way with the Giants D for the whole first half and pretty much moved at will. The Giants made some very good second half adjustments and the Skins started getting a little sloppy. But it was a battle and neither team dominated each other enough to warrant trash talking. See you in Landover.

  63. Skin fans really think this loss shows they will be running the NFC East for a decade? That’s hilarious. As soon as the skins had to lay it on the line, and couldn’t run trick plays away from the Giants D they became turnover machines (precious RG3 included).

The kid played a good game, sure. It’s tough on the road in the NFL, especially when you’re a rookie QB, and he hung in there. I respect that. But run the NFC East for a decade? LOL, he already had a concussion this season for trying to do too much. And could have added another today on numerous occasions.

Call me crazy, but I think there is more chance that he will be injury prone in the NFC East than have a long steady dominant career from what I have seen from him thus far. Too bad for Skins fans, but that is the objective truth.

  64. this was a great nfc east battle. both teams came in banged up, but stepped up to play a solid game. redskins fans – please don’t blame the refs for the loss – your team gained respect playing the defending champs hard and to the last minute. don’t taint your effort with crybaby tactics like we hear from packers and 49ers fans when their team loses. washington is a more solid team than dallas or philly and should be in the hunt for a wild card this season.

  65. Gilbride called a terrible game for Giant offense.

Throwing on 3-1 with 3:47 left! Run the ball for chrissakes! Put faith in your offense to run for a yard, get a first down and take the clock down.

Eli was not throwing well at all and missed several routes including Cruz in the endzone 1Q.

Lucky to have the win as Eli erased his mistakes with the 77 yarder to Cruz.

10 points taken off the board by committing penalties. There ya go.

  67. Eli was off and we couldn’t run for nothing. Yet, we still won kneeling out the clock. An objective skins fan should recognize that they are still light years away from being an elite team. It’s like when the giants used to come close to beating the late 90s rams. I knew we were still miles away.

  68. Mr Wright –
I guess you’ll conceed you were wrong about Morris and the Redskins when you indicated previously that the Giants would take away the middle of the field —

I can see on the other postings where you’ve changed your mind on Morris — I am glad you’ve had an opportunity to reassess but please do not claim that you “always respected Morris” because you have been dismissive in the past.

I’ll take my slow footed Eli manning over rg3. He’s a great athlete don’t get me wrong, but the elite quarter backs are the ones that gets the whole offense involved
    ____
No one’s asking you to change loyalties. If you aren’t from DC, Eli is one of the best quarterbacks you can ask for. But as for getting the whole offense involved, these are facts:
Griffin connected with eight different receivers and posted a completion percentage of 72, with two touchdowns and one interception.
Eli connected with seven receivers, posting a completion percentage of 65, with one touchdown and two picks.
Meanwhile, five Redskins rushed for 248 net yards and three Giants rushed for 64 net yards.

So, no disrespect to Eli, he played a great game, but don’t pretend like just because Griffin is fast on his feet doesn’t mean he can’t get the whole offense involved.

  70. The modern day Joe Montana is Eli Manning. It’s nice to watch and witness greatness. We are watching a legend folks. Enjoy.
