Chris Cooley: I’m in real good shape

There were two universal reactions to Sunday’s news that Redskins tight end Fred Davis suffered a season-ending Achilles injury.

The first was that it was a bad turn for both Davis and the Redskins offense, which was going to be without their leading receiver. The second was that it probably wouldn’t be long until Chris Cooley was back in a Redskins uniform.

As widely expected and reported on Sunday, Cooley has made his way back to the Redskins. and several other outlets have reported that Cooley has passed his physical and offically rejoined the team. Cooley said that he’s in “real good shape” and doesn’t know what kind of role the Redskins have in mind for him.

“I’m really, really glad I didn’t go anywhere else,” Cooley said, via Rich Campbell of the Washington Times. “Right now it’s just about fitting in and doing what I can do.”

The Redskins should be able to find enough for him to do. Robert Griffin III was throwing a lot to Davis and Logan Paulsen made some big plays Sunday after Davis left the game. It would be silly to think that Cooley will have the same impact he did early in his career, but his familiarity with the offense should enable him to step into the lineup right away.

  1. Very happy to see this. Can’t believe no one picked him up in the mean time with two TE sets becoming more popular.

Still think he could start on half the teams in the league and he will put up 400-500 yards w/ 5 TDs in 9 games with RGIII in my humble opinion. Great move and happy for him.

  2. Couldn’t be happier! Bought a Cooley jersey to wear on the 4th two weeks ago. Guess they’re cheaper now. Cooley is the most popular Skin in a decade. They shouldn’t have gotten rid of him in the first place but damn if they didn’t save a bunch of money by cutting him in August.

  3. Too bad the redskins franchise is in tuuuurble shape, last playoff berth? Last SB? What i thought!!! Child please!!

  4. Welcome back Cooley!! It sucks to see Davis go down, he’s been coming on strong the last few weeks, but I’m definitely glad this is his replacement. And to be honest, I don’t think Cooley really made an effort to go anywhere after he was released. His life is in DC, and I don’t think he could put on another teams jersey. Plus he’s invested what he’s made from football, so its not like he had to play. Anyway welcome back Cooley, atleast you will have a good qb for the first time in your career.

  5. peytonsneck18, you are funny troll-like creature that I see popping up frequently, always ready with the negative comments. You are not a fun person.

That said, WELCOME BACK COOLEY! Hope the knee has healed now.

  6. I hope he can play saftey !!!!! There should be no reason we score 30 pts a game or close to it and we lose … We have no defensive back field … Every loss is due to our db’s getting burned .. Smh

  7. Heart and soul of the team. It’s a desperation move due to injuries. This season is basically a wash due to awful defense. Need to focus on defense in the coming off season.

  8. I love the fact that Shanahan has made good on his promise to bring Cooley back if there was an injury at TE. That’s a classy move and it makes perfect sense. For all the people that were surprised he didn’t get other offers… he did and turned them down. He wanted to be a Skin or retire. He didn’t need the money, he saved it unlike all the other dumb broke players. It’s a shame our defense is not very good. We’d be 7-0 or 6-1 right now. Skins have the #3 best offense in the nfl and are #1 in rushing… but, #30 in defense. Gotta be good on both sides. Hail!

  9. We lose our starting TE, resign Cooley, yet Brandon Meriweather hasn’t played a down this season, our secondary is terrible and OJ Atogwe doesn’t have a job. Makes sense to me.

  10. All of you with negative comments on our defense… I certainly agree with you. However, I think the positives on our offense are WAY better than the negatives on our defense. We can actually put up points this year! When is the last time we could say that? 1999?

  11. @hugeredskinsfan

I agree with you about being excited about our offense, but what’s the point in putting up 30 points a game when you let other team put up 31?

A few years ago we had a top five defense, and they changed it completely. If we still had our 4-3, they would easily be 5-2. Of course, if “if’s” and “but’s” were candy and nuts…
