Derek Sherrod, the Packers’ 2011 first-round draft pick, is unlikely to play at all this season as he continues to recover from the broken leg he suffered last season.

The Packers selected Sherrod, an offensive tackle from Mississippi State, with the 32nd pick in last year’s draft, but he didn’t see much action as a rookie and suffered a broken tibia and fibula in his right leg in December, which required emergency surgery. That leg injury has persisted into this year and resulted in Sherrod being placed on the physically unable to perform list, and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that the Packers are likely to put Sherrod on injured reserve and shut him down for the season.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy said the team is being cautious with Sherrod because of the severity of the injury he suffered.

“He’s not ready,” McCarthy said. “That’s really all I can tell you. I know he’s frustrated, but we all saw the injury. It was a serious injury, definitely something that we’re not going to rush him back.”

And so the Packers’ first-round pick from 2011 will give them a grand total of five games and zero starts in his first two seasons.
