Quinn still not cleared, Cassel gets another week

You get the sense the Chiefs would love to have a viable quarterback controversy, but circumstances won’t allow one.

According to Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star, Brady Quinn hasn’t been cleared to return after his Oct. 28 concussion, and won’t play Monday night in Pittsburgh.

That means Matt Cassel starts again, by default.

“He has not been cleared for contact and he’s been advised not to play Monday night,” Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel said of Quinn. “We’re going to err on the side of caution and protect the football player.”

Quinn is doing non-contact work, and was expected to do individual drills today.

Cassel has had a wretched year, with 11 interceptions and eight fumbles, as the Chiefs lead the league in turnovers and haven’t led a game for a second in regulation.

But as bad as it is, Crennel said he’s not thinking about playing last year’s fifth-rounder Ricky Stanzi instead.

“He’s still improving and we’re still working [with] him and he’s one play away and I think he’s excited about that possibility and he’s preparing every week like he’s going to play,” Crennel said of Stanzi. “We’ll see how the games go.”

We’ve seen how they’ve gone, and the fact they don’t think Stanzi could help them may say more about Stanzi than the Chiefs.

  1. I’m still trying to figure out why they won’t at least give Stanzi a chance. How worse could it get?

  2. Are these guys still hoping on hope on Quinn, hmm guy is a bum. Cassel is nothing special, but he is an upgrade over Quinn thats for sure.

Not sure. I get the sense the Chiefs would love to have simply a viable quarterback.

  4. Quarterback controversy sure seems to follow Romeo and Quinn around. As a Browns fan, I feel for you Chiefs fans. Your season, as ours, starts next year.

“I could get 22 guys off the street and win 2 games….against the Chiefs”

  6. The Raiders gave him a couple of good shots and the guy quit.

Quinn just doesn’t want to play again.

  7. If they’re going to give Stanzi any playing time, it wouldn’t be fair to have it happen first on the road against the Steelers on MNF. It would be smarter (not that the word “smart” should be associated with Crennel or The Great Scott Pioli) to use him in a situation where no one is watching, such as when they face the Bengals at home in a few weeks.
