Seahawks activate Walter Thurmond

Walter Thurmond

The Seattle Seahawks activated third-year cornerback Walter Thurmond from the physically unable to perform list on Wednesday.

Thurmond fractured his left fibula in a collision with Seahawks safety Earl Thomas and Cleveland Browns wide receiver Greg Little (pictured) in Seattle’s 6-3 loss to the Browns last October. He then re-fractured the bone during the rehab process in March, forcing him to undergo a second surgery on his leg. The setback landed him on the physically unable to perform list to begin the season.

Thurmond began practicing with the Seahawks on Oct. 22 and the team had until next Monday to activate him. Seattle released receiver Charly Martin on Tuesday to clear room for Thurmond on the roster.

It’s the second major injury Thurmond has had to come back from in four years. Thurmond suffered an ACL injury during his senior season at Oregon.

Thurmond will likely factor in as a nickel cornerback for the Seahawks. Veteran cornerback Marcus Trufant has struggled at times adjusting to playing in the slot after spending most of his career on the outside.

Thurmond has recorded 49 tackles and a forced fumble in two seasons with the Seahawks.

Seattle re-signed Martin to the practice squad Wednesday.
