The agent for cornerback Stanford Routt was shocked by the Chiefs’ decision to cut him. The agent likely is perplexed, then, by the fact that no one claimed Routt’s contract on waivers.
That’s precisely what happened, per a source with knowledge of the situation.
As a result, Routt becomes a free agent, able to sign with any team. He also will be entitled to collect the balance of his $1.8 million base salary from the Chiefs as termination pay -- and to keep what he gets paid by another team.
Given the $5 million guaranteed he received this year from the Raiders and the $6 million he’ll get from the Chiefs, getting $11 million to be fired twice in one year isn’t a bad deal.
