Roger Staubach likes Romo, thinks Jerry should delegate more

Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo takes a lot of criticism, but not from his Hall of Fame predecessors.

Former Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman has gone so far as to say Romo “is a better quarterback than I was,” and today former Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach said he’s high on Romo, too.

In an appearance on Mike and Mike in the Morning, Staubach noted problems on the Cowboys’ offensive line and said that Romo “is having to scramble for his life at times.” And Staubach said that Cowboys fans should embrace the fact that Romo is the man to lead their team.

“He’s a heck of a quarterback,” Staubach said of Romo. “This year and next year, for sure, he’ll be the guy. . . . I think he can do it. I think Tony Romo isn’t the problem.”

So what is the problem? Staubach was careful not to directly criticize Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, but he did suggest that perhaps Jones should let the football people make more of the football decisions.

“Jerry is trying real hard,” Staubach said. “He’s got to find a medium ground there and delegate more authority.”

Staubach said he’s optimistic that the 3-5 Cowboys can turn things around and make the playoffs, but he acknowledged that if they don’t, Jones is going to hear even more criticism for his personnel moves than he has already.

“It’s been a disappointing season so far, but it’s not over,” Staubach said. “I don’t think Dallas is out of it, but if they’re out of it this year he’ll continue to get more criticism as far as how he’s handling the team. But it’s his team, he owns the team and he’s passionate about it, and I can’t tell him what to do so I’m just a big Cowboy fan and hoping for the best.”

After the results over the first half of the season, most big Cowboy fans are hoping for a new general manager.

  1. That’s the Roger Staubach we older folks remember– when he speaks, he says nothing beyond the company line. Never malicious, never controversial, never interesting.

  2. Jerry should hire roger or maybe holmgren as a consultant, like what he tried to do with Dan reeves a few years ago. This way, he retains final call and gm title while having a qualified football voice to help guide him.

  3. “Staubach was careful not to directly criticize Cowboys owner Jerry Jones…”

Why is roger Staubach afraid of Jerry Jones? He’s independently wealthy, isn’t dependent on Jerry Jones for anything, so why is he “careful not to directly criticize” Jerry? Would it be considered “low class” to directly criticize someone who has a lot of money, but is still “low class” himself?

  4. Romo is off the charts good, physically, right up there with the greatest of all time.

    Mentally, not so much.

    two reasons:
    1) Roger is a retired naval officer, and therefore by proclamation also a gentleman.

    2) Even if he weren’t, Jerry does have a lot of power and say about what goes on in Dallas. I know that Roger used to be a huge real estate magnate there. It’s typically not a good idea to make enemies of extremely wealthy/powerful people in the area you are doing business.

You don’t get it. Not everything is about money or “low class”. It’s about maintaining a relationship with the Cowboys. Since Jerry is the current owner, it’s his organization. Ask Jimmy Johnson how welcome he is with the Cowboys right about now.

  7. Roger is a class act period.

He also is perhaps THE most underrated QB of all time. You put his numbers in today’s offenses – not to mention today’s rules – and the youngins’ heads would spin. He retired with the highest QB rating of all time. The recent NFL Network special ranked him the #1 QB of the 70s. Well deserved.

And, don’t forget he served 5 of his prime years in the military not on the football field.

That’s probably very accurate, even if that means he may not be totally frank about his assessment of Romo. Afterall, several QBs did not get good protection and were running for their life but still won SB.

  9. I have been against plenty of QBs for the Cowboys from Quincy Carter to Chad Hutchinson to Drew Bledsoe just to name a few. Wanted them out.

The reason being, I watch every Dallas Cowboy’s game, every second, for most of my life, good or bad. Unfortunately, they are a huge part of my life.

That being said ROMO IS NOT THE PROBLEM!!! If you listen to the media and watch only highlights, I do not blame anybody for thinking that with the way he is painted.

Romo is an awesome QB who has been a victim of bad coaching, no running game, poor defensive play, depleted O-line, and STUPID receivers.
