Ravens sign the cornerback named Chris Johnson

We thought about making the headline read “Ravens sign Chris Johnson” and then opening with a joke about how it isn’t that Chris Johnson.

You probably wouldn’t have laughed, though. It really isn’t that funny when you take the five seconds to realize that there’s no way that the Ravens would be signing the running back named Chris Johnson in the first place.

It’s the cornerback named Chris Johnson and the Ravens announced that he’s signed a contract to join the team. Johnson was with the Raiders last season, but suffered through a season filled with physical and emotional pain. Johnson missed time early in the year with injury and then missed the final chunk of the season on the non-football injury list after his mother and sister were shot in Texas. Johnson’s sister died as a result of her injuries, but Johnson’s mother survived. Johnson was released by the Raiders, with whom he spent five years, in March.

He’ll give the Ravens some extra depth in the secondary with Jimmy Smith hindered by a groin injury. Johnson, a 2003 seventh-round pick by the Rams Packers, has eight interceptions in 72 career games.

The Ravens made room for Johnson by placing running back Bobby Rainey on injured reserve with a knee injury. Rainey had been on the active roster for the last few weeks, but never saw any game action.
