The Bears chose not to practice on Wednesday, which meant that they didn’t have to issue an official injury report for the team.
When it came to quarterback Jay Cutler, Coach Lovie Smith passed on giving an unofficial one as well. Smith wouldn’t say whether or not Cutler has passed any of the tests mandated by the league’s concussion protocol or what his status would be during Thursday’s session. Smith was willing to say that Cutler’s concussion history -- he’s reportedly suffered four of them dating back to Vanderbilt -- wasn’t something that was a big concern for him.
“I am just worried about the one that he had the other night,” Smith said, via Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune. “Can’t look into the future or anything like that. Every case is different. Jay’s feeling a whole lot better. I just know that. It will all play out.”
It looks like the 49ers will have Alex Smith at quarterback for the Monday night game between the teams after he was able to get clearance for a non-contact practice on Wednesday. If Cutler gets the same green light on Thursday, the prospect of a battle between backup quarterbacks will be all but snuffed out.
