Technically speaking, Wes Welker’s questionable on the injury report with an ankle injury.
But his teammates have learned to not be surprised by what he can get back up from.
“The dude is one of the toughest dudes I’ve seen,” tight end Rob Gronkowski said of Welker, via Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald. “For his size, his body weight, what he does, he has no fear in him. He’s willing to take any kind of shot to make a catch and put his body in the way for the team.
“He’s a great player, a lot of toughness, and he’s a great team player because what he’s doing with his size, to put his body in the way to help out the team is unbelievable.”
The most recent shot, from Bills safety Jairus Byrd, wasn’t the kind of bone-rattling hit Welker has so often taken over the middle. But it did aggravate an ankle injury that has bothered him throughout the year.
Welker said this week he’d “hopefully” be able to play, but he’s not fooling his teammates.
“You see a guy like that going in and getting dirty against guys 100 pounds and heavier than him, it gets you amped up and gets you going, too, thinking I should be the guy doing that, too,” Gronkowski said. “He gets everyone going, and his toughness is a huge part of our team.”
The idea that Gronkowski might play with more abandon than he already does is a little scary, but Welker clearly has that impact on people.
