Bears quarterback Jay Cutler said he understands defenders are in a tough spot, after Texans linebacker Tim Dobbins was fined $30,000 for the hit that may have caused the concussion that kept Cutler out of last night’s game.

Cutler, during his regular appearance on ESPN 1000’s Waddle and Silvy show, said he didn’t think Dobbins had “malicious intent,” when he hit him.

“He’s out there reacting and playing football,” Cutler said, via the Chicago Sun-Times. “At the end of the day, I wouldn’t want to be a defender. It’s hard. You’re expected to play at an extremely high level, but your target has shrunk.”

Asked about the fine, Cutler said: “Fair or unfair, those are the rules.”

Cutler was flagged for being across the line of scrimmage, which was offset by Dobbins’ personal foul call.

The fact that Cutler was talking on the radio is probably a promising sign for his upcoming status, after he skipped last week’s show.
