Jason Babin still respects Andy Reid, wants to play for a winner

Hours after he found out that the Eagles were cutting him, defensive end Jason Babin said he has no hard feelings toward coach Andy Reid, and that he’s eager to win games for whatever team he plays for next.

“I think the guys really respect him, they respect the situation, they respect the heat he takes for the team,” Babin said of Reid in an interview with Trey Wingo on NFL Live. “It’s a tough environment, the Philadelphia media market.”

Babin said he would like to see Reid get credit for the work he has done in Philadelphia, and not get branded as a loser on his way out the door.

“He’s been there so long, he’s done a lot,” Babin said. “He doesn’t want to go out on a sour note.”

Now that the Eagles have placed Babin on waivers, any team that wants him and is willing to take on his contract can claim him within the next 24 hours. If multiple teams claim him, the team with the highest waiver priority (which basically means the team with the worst record) will get him. If no team claims him, he’ll become an unrestricted free agent.

Babin isn’t sure what to expect, but he did indicate that he wants to play for a winner.

“Maybe it was the best thing for me,” Babin said. “I think it’s pretty clear what my intentions are. I like to win, I like to compete, I like to sack the quarterback. I imagine there’s someone out there looking for that.”

If there is a team out there looking for that, a guy who has 36 sacks in the last three seasons is available.

  1. There’s no way somebody doesn’t pick up Babin. This season hasn’t been his fault. He’s got talent, and talented pass rushers are the second most valued players in the NFL.

  2. “I like to win, I like to compete, I like to sack the quarterback. I imagine there’s someone out there looking for that.”

If a team is looking for someone who hasn’t done anything he likes all year, he’s a lock to get signed!

  3. I hope the redskins sign him when he clears waivers!!! in the redskins 3-4 d as a rush olb he would be dominate and replace what we have missed in orakpo!!!

if he clears waivers and sign him shanny!!!

As an Eagles fan, I can only hope he goes to Dallas.

  5. “Maybe it was the best thing for me,” Babin said. “I think it’s pretty clear what my intentions are. I like to win, I like to compete, I like to sack the quarterback. I like to line up offsides. I like to destroy locker room chemistry. I like to hunt. I don’t like football. I imagine there’s someone out there looking for that.”

    Good luck with that loser!

  6. Babin couldn’t care less about playing the run or his gap responsibilities, which is why he was cut. You can’t be paying that much money to a guy who in all honesty shouldn’t see the field except for 3rd and longs.

Ya he got 18 sacks, 18 sacks while constantly leaving his teammates in the lurch because all he did was tunnel vision on the QB.

Situational pass rusher is the best he is going to see on a “winner” Because “winners” don’t let guys like him see the field on 1st and 2nd downs.

  7. I wouldn’t mind seeing niners pick him up just for rest of this year. Be scary smith brothers. Brooks and babin all solid and or great pass rushers.

  8. Well, one thing it would take to claim Babin would be $1,742,188 in salary cap space because that’s the pro-rated amount on his contract for the remaining 5 games of 2012.

  9. He doesn’t want to see Reid “branded” as a loser? Umm ok, but that’s not as serious of the issue of reality that he currently IS a loser, as evidenced by having already lost this year.

Why worry about the branding to that much more important actuality? The Eagles need to get real and shape up, they are the #2 biggest underachievers right now after the Lions.

  10. Well my fellow Eagles fans we got what we wanted. Now we will have to be patient for the next several seasons as we try and rebuild this mess. Coach Reid will be gone soon and many over paid vets as well. It is going to get worse before it gets better.

Coach Reid did a solid job and is a good coach. But his message is falling on deaf ears and the fans can’t take his predictability any more. Good luck in the future Walrus.

If one looks at Babin’s stats then one would figure he was a beast, but the truth is he is a one trick pony at best. He is set on getting to the QB and leaves his gaps and assignments to do just that. This move was made to see what some of the guys on the roster bubble for next year have in them. If they can cut a probowl DE who had 18 sacks last season then they can and will cut anyone who is dogging it.

  11. I love it how he rips the media in Philly like thats the real problem here.

No Jason, the real problem is that you guys were bragging all off season about how great you are and your potential to be – and I quote – “A dynasty” – while for two straight years you have been beyond suck.

Several members of the Eagles over the past two years have ripped the fans for calling the team out for underachieving, yet you completely ignore the fact that you yourselves set the expectations. God forbid we hold you accountable for it.

The problem with much of the players on this team over the past two years is that NONE of you hold yourselves and each other accountable. You should be embarrased about the way you play week in and week out rather than constantly pointing the finger at the fans or the media.

I respect Reid, and although I feel his play calling is predictable and its time to go, I still respect the man and have deep sympathy for what he is personally going through. Not to mention the fact that week in and week out he takes all the bullets for this team, and still they go out there and barely go through the motions.

I can’t say it any more bluntly, this team is no good.

Yeah Babin, the Eagles are looking for someone like that which is why the cut you, I just wish they’d have sent Washburn with you… Good riddance!!!

  13. After he clears waivers a play off team in need of a situational pass rusher will snap him up.

The Giants could use him. Yeah he hasn’t been great but I think he would be able to provide more production than Justin Tuck, who has been a complete non-factor this year.

    ————————————————–

You cannot be serious with this comment. Why in the world would we take a player like this when we already have Osi doing the same thing? Osi is actually more of a complete player than this moron. I wouldn’t touch him with a 10 foot pole.

  15. Pats should kick the tires on this guy, especially with the injury to CJones and suspension of Cunningham. The defense is starting to come together with Talib, McCourty playing safety, Chung returning from injury and Dennard looking like a player. Even a situational pass rusher could put them over the top. Reid and Belichick are close, I’m sure BB could find out if there are injury/personal issues contributing in Babin’s drop in production. Pats have a real shot this yr, go all in.

  16. Last player picked up by NE that was considered a liability against the run but a good pass rusher: MAnderson(10 sacks).

  17. U can neva have enuff pass rushers so in that case jerry reese grab that guy we can stand osi or tuck up to rush like a linebaker wow he wuld be rejuvenated with jpp kiwi tuck lined up nex to him

  18. Everybody likes and respects Andy Reid. To bad they don’t play hard for him and have laid down this year. It is obvious they have taken advantage of Reid and it’s time to bring in a hard ass coach they don’t like so much.

Where in the world did you go to school, dude. Really?

  20. Anyone who thinks this guy is roster worthy has never watched him play. Those sack stats are fools gold.

What, I thought Jason Babin retired last year?
    ______

He did retire as a player after last season. The problem is they forgot to tell Reid so he kept putting him in the games.

I think he’ll end up in Detroit. They like the wide 9 and can’t get enough of 1 trick ponies, just ask Avril and Young.

  22. Falcons need him. We only need him to pressure the qb. Otherwise he can sit on the sidelines while kroy does his thing. I take his 6sacks this years oppose to ray Edwards 0

  23. I mentioned Detroit in an earlier PFT post, but be careful when mentioning non-“wide 9” teams.

The 3-4 OLB spot is hard to play and players likely need an off-season to fully play it well and he did not bloom until finding Jim Washburn in Tennessee who ran the “Wide 9” in 2010.

  24. Fans who think Babin is a great pass rusher have clearly not seen him play. They’ve only seen ESPN highlights and read a stat sheet. Babin is a product of the Wide 9. If you don’t run that, he will be a liability. Babin can’t defend the run to save his life.

  25. If you want to play for a winner, get ready for league mininum, thats all they are going to pay you. If you get claimed, only a losing team will take you on……bottom line….be glad if anybody signs you, because nowadays in the nfl , rookies are a lot cheaper, and a lot more hungry. They want to hustle, so after 4 years they get paid.

  26. 20 year eagles season ticket holder here. babin is a poseur. a one year wonder. eagles should have remembered the data from babin’s first eagles stint, when he did nothing, and never have signed him the second time. he is heavily tatted, which suggests he is tough. but mr pseudo tough had to whine about the fans. oh woe is me, the philly fans are so mean. what a girl. its guys like babin who are contributing to this yr’s debacle. they are highly paid and should be leaders & perform. but they don’t lead and aren’t delivering. nnamdi is another. the phils had the same issue this past season. guys like rollins, victorino and pence needed to come up big and basically put their tails between their legs and hid under the table. babin sucks. no loss at all.
