The Redskins are preparing for a rematch with the Giants on Monday night, a rematch that could pull them within a game of first place in the NFC East. But if the Redskins had won their October game against the Giants, then first place would be on the line Monday night. And that’s what the Redskins think they should be playing for.

We were supposed to win that game,” Redskins defensive end Stephen Bowen told the Washington Times.

The Redskins appeared to have the previous meeting within their grasp when Robert Griffin III hit Santana Moss for a 30-yard touchdown pass that gave Washington a 23-20 lead with a minute and a half to play. Unfortunately, the Redskins’ defense promptly gave up a 77-yard touchdown pass from Eli Manning to Victor Cruz.

Redskins nose tackle Barry Cofield said he still wonders why the Redskins gave up that big play at the worst time.

“You go back and watch the tape, and you feel good about what you’re putting out there. Snap for snap you evaluate, you grade yourself and you feel like you did some things well and you appreciate that,” Cofield said. “But at the same time you still look back and think, ‘What if?’ And the only way to erase that is by winning this week.”

Griffin, meanwhile, calls it, “A game we should have won.” If the Redskins want to catch the Giants in the NFC East, they’re going to have to forget the “should haves” and “supposed tos” and get a win on Monday night that actually counts on the scoreboard and in the standings.
