The Cowboys have been playing without center Phil Costa for the last six weeks, so they’ll be more than prepared to play without him for the rest of the season.
Costa has been placed on injured reserve with the partially dislocated ankle that’s been keeping him out of action. Costa was only able to play in three games overall this season thanks to a back injury early in the season and he’ll be leaving the position to Ryan Cook the rest of the way. Costa started all 16 games for the Cowboys last year after signing with the team as an undrafted free agent in 2010.
Costa performed better this year than he did in 2011 while healthy and Cook’s been okay, but there’s a good chance the Cowboys will be in the market for other options at center during the offseason. They might have bigger priorities on the offensive line, though. Right tackle Doug Free and right guard Mackenzy Bernadeau have both struggled mightily this season.
The team will fill Costa’s roster spot with tackle Darrion Weems, who they signed off of the Broncos’ practice squad.
