Braylon Edwards is a New York Jet

AP

A week after saying the people who run the New York Jets are idiots, Braylon Edwards has become a New York Jet.

After the Seahawks waived Edwards, the Jets put in a claim on him, and today they were awarded Edwards on waivers, Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News first reported and the team later announced. That means Edwards will be with the Jets for the final three games of the regular season.

This will be Edwards’ second stint with the Jets; he also played for them in 2009 and 2010. Despite his comments about the Jets’ front office being idiots — comments he later apologized for — head coach Rex Ryan has always said publicly that he likes Edwards.

If Edwards can play well, he could provide a shot in the arm for the Jets’ woeful passing game. And it’s even conceivable that he could help the Jets get to the playoffs: Despite a 2012 season that has often been a debacle, the Jets are still in the wild card hunt.

UPDATE 4:44 p.m. ET: Edwards said on Twitter that he’s glad to be a Jet again. This time he didn’t call anyone an idiot.

  1. Edwards was correct when he said the people who run the Jets are idiots and to prove the point the same people signed Edwards.

  2. Wow, they are literally making an effort to be as hilarious and terribly run as humanly possible.

  3. “If Edwards can play well, he could provide a shot in the arm for the Jets’ woeful passing game.”

does that shot in the arm include Sanchez not showing up on gameday?

  4. They do realize that they need to run the table and have about 4 teams fall flat on their face in on order to back into the playoffs as a 6th seed, at which point they’re bound to get humiliated anyway, right? This move is nothing shy of pointless.

  5. What does this signing do for the Jets in the long run? Are they really thinking that adding this guy (who just opening disparaged the organization) is going to win them a SB this year? I love the circus act, but this is mind-boggling.

  6. If this wasn’t New York no one would care. If the guy wasn’t trash and had done something in the last 2 years he wouldn’t be cut at this point in the season.

I mean how many “Why isn’t Plax signed?” articles were there? That one catch in 3 games was sure a shot in the arm for the Steelers.

  7. To most outsiders, Braylon Edwards is an talented jerk with poor hands. That’s the perception. Truth be told, Braylon Edwards was a fantastic player for the Jets in the two years he was with them. He made big plays in the pass and run game and came through in the clutch. See 2010 playoff run. This move is 2 years too late. It’s just a short term rental. The move by the Jets considering their current roster composition makes a lot of sense.

  8. I know its cool to hate on the Jets, and Edwards. But the proof is in the pudding the Jets have been a better team with him on there. His two seasons with the Jets, they went to the AFC Championship game. He was the receiver Sanchez always looked too and always made big plays. It should have been #1 Holmes and #2 Edwards for the past two seasons. So Edwards is right the FO are a bunch of idiots

  9. Bring ‘yo popcorn! The circus has four more games to run and just brought in a new clown!

  10. He attacked management over their decision making. Then they re-sign him…guess that confirms their bad decision making.

  11. This is clear proof that even if the jets didn’t make large amounts of poor decisions, people would still hate on them anyway. This is a good move in the position of the jets. They have no receivers and braylon, although he hasn’t done much the last two years, had two good years with the jets previously. Him and sanchez hopefully get right back on track.

  12. So what if everyone is wrong, and this whole thing was a setup, and the Jets & Braylon Edwards actually devised this plan to get the Seahawks to cut Braylon so that he would be available for the Jets to pick up on waivers so they could get some help at the receiver position?? Hmmmmm…..

  13. You know what i have to say u all like to hate on the jets….but when he was on the jets he was very productive…and the fact that he caught 20 passes since he left-he was only targeted 30 time so pretty efficient if u ask me….

  14. For those of you commenting calling the the NYJ front office perhaps you should think twice in this case….I agree Mike Tannenbaum is an awful GM and Woody Johnson should sell the team to an owner who would actually dedicate themselves tthe team, but regardless Braylon Edwards was a solid receiver in New York, and given the current circumstances where Marty Gilyard actually gets playing time, the jets were in desperate need of WR depth.

You make it sound so… unlikely. Actually, they just need to win out over their weak opponents, and have the Bengals and Steelers lose when they play higher ranked teams. Then get humiliated.

  16. This guy is a punk. The most classless thing I’ve seen recently were him and Santonio allowed to stand-up during the end of the game on top of the NYJ bench and taunt the crowd with the “Jet” arm symbol as they were beating the Pats in the playoffs (amazingly.)

    Team captains.

  17. As flawed as Edwards is, he is still a massive upgrade on the NY Jets current WR corps.

Good for Mr. T. for swallowing his ego and getting help for a team that is miraculously in a playoff hunt all of a sudden.

Now take care of business in Tenn on MNF and WELCOME HOME BRAYLON!!!

  18. No fanbase other than the jests could possible cling to losing 2 AFC Championship games this long? Let’s not forget they backed into them by Indy “resting”and so on.

I mean really, there should be some type of timeline for this. I know jet fans are desperate for anything positive to happen but it is irrevelant to continue to hold up these old, stale losses, right?

  19. This is perfect, the inmates are indeed running the asylum, all jokes aside he and Sanchez did put up good numbers so why not. But I do have one question why didn’t they sign him in the off season in the first place?

It would’ve been a “good” move but considering Braylon dissed the Jets’ management, then the Jets sign him later is a BAD move. The Jets is the ONLY team in the NFL who would do this. It really shows why their team is in disarray.

  21. You cinn and pitt fans can joke all you want, the Jets are breathing down your necks, and you know the Pats want no part of NY in January….they remember.

  22. In Seattle he couldn’t hold on to a 4-5th WR spot and now the Jets feel as if they are signing a franchize #1 WR….wow. That is why Seattle is a top team and NYJets are bottom feeder type team.

  23. Actually, what the Jets need to get in the playoff is to win out (@TEN, SD, @Buf) and for the Steelers to lose twice (@DAL, CIN, CLE) and the Bengals to lose once (@PHI, @PIT, BAL).

Jets win on Sunday, Steelers lose in Dallas, and things get real interesting with 2 to go.

So, no, they don’t need to get over 4 teams, just 2, and those 2 play each other as well.

  24. HA! Hilarious! Leave it to the Jets to sign on a guy who was just bashing them in the media. Do they somehow think the circus has left town due to a couple of very cheap wins against the lowly Cards and Jags? Jets tossed him out years ago yet somehow he’s now the missing piece to a playoff run? Funny. They’re the George Costanza of the NFL.

  25. Great news for Braylon. He has a much better shot at becoming a male model in NY than he did in Seattle.

  26. Too bad. He came so close to coming close to making an impact in Seattle.

Best of luck to him, though. On a serious note, he never seemed to have a bad attitude while up in WA and was ready to contribute when called upon. Just never made the most of his chances…

  27. i’m glad edwards is back. he did well when sanchez threw to him before, why not hope for more? they’re in a deep dark hole. three games isn’t much for getting situated. but if they make the postseason, he could make their game more fun to watch.
