Chiefs shelve Bowe for the season, likely for good

AP

The Chiefs have made a roster move in advance of Sunday’s game at Oakland.  Though not unexpected, it likely signals the end of receiver Dwayne Bowe’s career in Kansas City.

The team has announced that Bowe has been placed on injured reserve.  He reportedly suffered multiple broken ribs last weekend against the Browns.

Bowe, who signed a one-year franchise tender earlier this year, will become a free agent in March, absent a new contract with the Chiefs or the second application of the franchise tag.  To keep Bowe for 2013, the Chiefs would have to offer him a one-year guaranteed deal worth more than $11 million.

Bowe is a wasted talent on the Chiefs. March will set him free.

Dwayne Bowe has amazing talent, but he’s inconsistent (at best) and finds ways to be a below average receiver in most games. He will astound/thrill you with amazing acrobatic catches and drop an easy catch on 3rd and 2. I’d like for KC to resign him because he is the only legitimate receiving threat on the team, but not break the bank for him. He’s good. Not great.

  2. Aren’t the bears paying Marshall a fortune? Would be a lot of money to put into WR.

I could see him as a good fit on a lot of teams, which I think will lead to a bidding war

  3. He proved his value when he went out with an injury in last week’s game. without him, there is NO passing game. he may be a knucklehead on a minor level but the guy is a gamer and makes plays. chiefs need to sign him and bring someone legitimate in at QB and second WR to help this guy. he will have tons of teams after him if the chiefs are stoooopid enough to let him get away.

  4. Why in the world wouldn’t the Chiefs at least tag and trade him. Can’t imagine they’d just let him become a free agent and walk. Easily worth a 2nd or 3rd rounder to someone.

  5. Lots of rib issues this year, I don’t recall so many happening in a year. Maybe they should go back to banging heads…

  6. This guy should be paired opposite a speedy, talented WR… Just imagine him opposite Percy Harvin or Pierre Garcon

  7. Bowe would be a good compliment to Josh Gordon and Greg Little in Cleveland. Cut ties with Massaquoi! The three of them would create legitimate WR core there.

  8. He’d give the Pats a great deep threat and would save us having to draft a WR next year (only have Lloyd, Welker and Edelman(just broke his leg).

Bowe is Bengal bound, him on the other side of AJ Green equals super bowl. WHO DEY!!!!!!

Not with Dalton tossing the pig. Who Dey needs a QB.

  10. He would be a great #1 outside Receiver opposite the speedster TJ Graham and Stevie Johnson in the slot, with the big target Scott Chandler in the Tight End position.
I am sure that Bowe coming to Buffalo would make Ryan Fitzpatrick’s job much easier, but after this season I can’t see the Bills keeping Fitzpatrick for anything other than a little mentoring for what ever Quarterback Buddy Nix brings in for 2013. Fitzpatrick has the smarts to run a complicated Offense, just not athletically. That is why I think Nix will keep Fitzpatrick as the starter for the first couple of weeks while their QB for the future gets comfortable enough to run Gailey’s Offense. Having Bowe would be nothing but a positive for whoever is under center.

  11. Emery has his eyes on this stud…with Hester, Davis out the door in Chicago, Bowe will be a great addition to the offense with Long on oline.

Cutler has stated that he’s willing to take a decent contract extension to allow room in salary cap.

  12. The Chiefs pick before Oakland again? Is that because the Chiefs weren’t smart enough to trade a 1st and 2nd rounder for Carson Palmer?

As bad as the Chiefs are, at least they’ve been to the playoffs 4 times since Chokeland broke the .500 mark, 10 years ago.

I just can’t figure out what’s worse, letting Woodson go and turning into a hall of famer or drafting JaMarcus Russel, or Gallery, or getting rid of Gruden, or hiring Shell, or Kiffin, or Cable, or jackson?

Maybe if this was Madden, but it’s the NFL and the Bengals will never win a Super Bowl.

  14. He would definitely look good in patriots’ blue.

and what receiver wouldn’t want brady throwing to him?

  15. He’ll find his way to NY/NJ, but it won’t be with the real team here, it’ll be with the Jets. As an originally overrated, now overweight & underperforming bum, he’d fit in perfect with the NY Propeller Planes.

  16. ballboy48 u got it right
browns please sign him he still young and in his prime put him with weeden, little, gordon and cribbs and our wr’s will be decently good and dont forget benjamin too HECKERT if u are reading get this done in march

  17. Bowe should go to a place where he would be a number 1 and where they have a good QB. Miami, Jets, Bills, carolina, seattle st louis all make sense. Should be interesting to see FA play out

  18. Dear Dwayne,

Come to Denver and play with a real quarterback. Just think of what a receiver corp consisting of Thomas, Bowe & Decker could do.

Your Super Bowl ring is waiting for you in the Mile High city.

    Sincerely,
    Bronco Nation

  19. Miami needs him, they have no receivers and plenty of cap space. It makes sense for them to sign him, which is why Ireland won’t.

  20. If you thought the Chiefs were a laughing stock now, just wait til next year! 20 years of not winning a meaningful game & counting…………………

  21. Carson Palmer > Dontari Powe + Tyson Jackson + John Baldwin + Glen Dorsey

That’s 4 first round picks that I’d trade for Palmer

  22. D.Bowe is going to the best team who can pay him the most. That is the only thing we can be reasonably sure of.

That said, adding raw talent isn’t always a winning combo, as much as good chemistry is. I wonder how often players have great stats since they are on a bad team and that team doesn’t go anywhere BUT the superstar.
