Pete Carroll: I should have stopped fake punt

The Seahawks rolled to an easy 50-17 win over the Bills on Sunday.

On their way to victory, they successfully executed a fake punt up 47-17 in the fourth quarter. Michael Robinson’s 29-yard run set up a Steven Hauschka field goal and opened the door to criticism of Pete Carroll for running it up on a clearly beaten foe. Carroll was asked about the call after the game and said that he felt bad about it, explaining after the game that the play was in the playbook if the team got a particular look from the Bills and that he should have called it off given the situation.

“I feel bad about this. It was an automatic for us,” Carroll said, via Danny O’Neil of the Seattle Times. “We looked for it every time we were going to punt, and it was just there. I should have stopped it in the sense that it looked bad.”

It did look bad, but not nearly as bad as the Bills looked over the course of the 60 minutes. Perhaps that’s why Chan Gailey declined to comment when asked what he thought about the fake punt during his own postgame press conference.
