Falcons say no bad blood with Lions from last year

Earlier this year, Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh drew the ire of Colts guard Mike McGlynn for appearing to celebrate after Suh’s block forced Colts tackle Winston Justice out of the game with an injury.

Suh denied that he was celebrating the injury, but it wasn’t the first time his reaction to an injured opponent led to heated words from one of the injured players’ opponents. Suh and Lions defensive end Cliff Avril got slammed by members of the Falcons last year for allegedly taunting Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan while he was hurt on the turf. The Lions players denied that and accused Falcons offensive linemen of playing dirty in an incident that would be forgotten the next month after Suh’s stomp on Thanksgiving Day against the Packers.

The Lions and Falcons meet in Detroit on Saturday night, which could be an opportunity to renew hostilities. The Falcons aren’t looking to stoke the flames, however. Coach Mike Smith said the incident “wasn’t a big deal” and said it would have no bearing on who wins this year’s game between the teams. Ryan also isn’t looking to revisit what happened last year.

“That’s a long time ago, and we’re a different football team right now; they’re a different football team,” Ryan said, via Josh Katzenstein of the Detroit News. “I have no idea (what they said). I was just kind of collecting myself, trying to get myself back onto the field, so I have no idea.”

With the Falcons securing home-field advantage in the NFC with a victory, they probably don’t need to rehash something from more than a year ago to find motivation this week. The Lions might need some, though. They haven’t shown much motivation during the six-game losing streak they carry into this game.

  1. OK so let’s look at the hurdles the falcons over came as a team this year.
Week 2 Denver on Monday night (primetime against peyton)
Week 3 @SD west coast against a hot team on a short week(not as impressive)
Week 4-6 4th qrt winning drives
Week 8 @Philly (haven’t won there since the 80s and first loss Philly had after a bye under Andy Reid)
    Week 9 Dal (primetime)
*First time in franchise history starting 8-0
Week 12 @TB (one of the hottest teams at the time beat them in their building)
Week 13 NO (Another primetime game & got the monkey off their back with their “big brother”)
Week 15 NYG (we all know the 24-2 and this was a great way to let the world know this year is different)
Literally to this point they have gotten every “monkey” off their back. How are you not sold that this team is different? The only thing left is what we’ll accomplish in 4 weeks

  2. Let’s just call it what it is.

There is no bad blood because the Lions suck this year.

Last year when the Lions played the Falcons they were both good teams. You’re not going to have bad blood between a good team and a terrible team.

There is not a “literal” monkey on their back. Therefore it’s not “Literally” it’s “Figuratively.”

Oh, and they still haven’t won a playoff game so they haven’t gotten them all.

  4. To all the experts here that can guess what will happen Jan 2013– why don’t you scrape some of that cash off you make betting on football and use it for the common good of man?

  5. Is this the same game where Roddy White was claiming Cliff Avril kicked Matt Ryan when he was on the ground despite no video evidence and no flags being called?

  6. There’s no need for more revenge. That was taken care of when Matt Ryan came running back on the field later in the same game, then promptly turned out the lights on the Lions.

  7. I am a huge Lions fan. The Falcons should beat them with a decimated secondary and the 2 3 and 4 receivers not playing. However, with all the talk of firing Schwartz the Lions may be playing inspired football for their coach. I just hope C Johnson gets enough yards to stay on pace for the record.

They will lose in the playoffs again

This is getting really old. This the only thing we ever hear from people about the Falcons. They are a better team this year than they have been the past 2 years. They are playing with something to prove. Get over what happened in the past and just wait and see what they do this year!!
