Start the Michael Vick to the Jets rumors

The Jets don’t know what they will wind up doing with Mark Sanchez after the season, but it’s pretty clear that the Eagles will be parting ways with Michael Vick.

According to a report from Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, Vick would be “amenable” to coming to the Jets if Sanchez isn’t in the equation. On the Jets’ side, coach Rex Ryan is said to have an “affinity” for Vick and Mehta spoke to a Jets source who was all in favor of Vick coming to New York.

“Bring it on,” the source said. “He was hit too many times (behind a subpar offensive line) the last two years.”

Vick has turned the ball over 32 times over the last two seasons, which sounds pretty good when you compare it to Sanchez’s 50 giveaways but isn’t actually that much better in the larger sense of ball security. Playing behind a better offensive line might cut down on those turnovers, but the Jets’ offensive line hasn’t been great for much of the last two seasons.

Vick would certainly fit the profile of left-handed quarterbacks who can run and draw immense media coverage regardless of how (or if) they are playing, though. Given the likely loss of Tim Tebow, the Jets will have an opening for that spot in the offseason.
