Eagles coach Andy Reid’s final home game ended not with a bang or a whimper but with an extended monologue from Ed Hochuli.
With the Eagles on the Washington five yard line, poised for what could have been an overtime-forcing seven points (or, possibly, a touchdown and a two-point conversion that would have resulted in outright victory), quarterback Nick Foles was flushed out of the pocket and dragged to the ground. As he was falling, he got rid of the ball.
It struck the ground with one second left.
Alas, the Eagles didn’t get another chance. Hochuli activated his microphone and explained that, because the throw didn’t get back to the line of scrimmage, the effort amounted to intentional grounding, which entails a 10-second runoff.
“The game is over,” Hochuli said. Eventually.
The Redskins have moved to 9-6 with the 27-20 win, a home victory over the Cowboys the only thing standing in D.C.'s path to a division title.
