Tillman calls Calvin Johnson: “The LeBron James of football”

The Bears have exhausted their stock of NFL metaphors when asked about Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson.

So they went to the best of the NBA in their latest attempt to describe him.

“He can do everything,” Bears cornerback Charles Tillman said, via Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune. “He’s the LeBron James of football. If you could create a player — that’s Calvin Johnson. Size, speed, hands, agility, quickness, strength.”

Very few people have been able to stop Johnson this year, as he’s already surpassed Jerry Rice’s single-season receiving yardage record, and needs just 108 to reach 2,000 for the season.

Of course, the Bears have done as good a job on him as anyone, limiting him to three catches for 34 yards in the first meeting between the teams. Johnson has 1,300 yards in the nine games since, a 144.4 yards per game average.

That leaves Tillman a little less than confident they can repeat.

“It would be cool if we did,” Tillman said. “But I don’t know how.”

Having a pair of Pro Bowl cornerbacks (along with Tim Jennings) gives the Bears a better shot than most, but that may not be enough this time.

  1. Tillman sounds like the anti-Richard Sherman. He doesn’t feel the need to run his mouth talking trash about the best receiver in the game. Instead he’ll let his play do the talking. I’m a huge Lions fan and I just gained a new level of respect for Peanut. He’s also the only one I’ve ever seen truly shut Megatron down.

  2. In that case, Tom Brady is Kevin Durant, Mike Vick is Allen Iverson, Kevin Garnett is Ray Lewis, Tim Tebow is Jeremy Lin…and Ben Roethlisberger is Kobe Bryant circa rape trial.

  3. If you don’t factor in the part where LeBron is widely hated, often called the most hated player in American pro sports, the yes, Tillman is right. Calvin couldn’t make himself as hated if he tried.

  4. It’s nice to see this kind of respect within the division, while the upstart Seahawks can only talk smack.

Tillman and Johnson may both be the best at their respective positions in the league.

Are you still harboring 2+ year old issues? Let it go already. Its over.

“He’s not Lebron James until he craps on Detroit during a live television broadcast and leaves for the Packers.”

Or better yet, team him with Marshall on the Bears.

  7. Why does nobody take in to account that stafford thew bad uncatchable balls to johnson? Or more than half of the time calvin had bracket coverage? You know what shut down is? Revis. No saftey bs help. Reciever catchs ball..revis knocks it out. Simple. Nobody shuts down calvin without help. Its imposible. Hea bigger and faster and stronger than any living human being that lines up against him.

“Sounds like hes already making excuses for letting Calvin Johnson reach 2000 yards on his watch before it even happens.”

No, it actually sounds like one professional showing respect to another, but you are welcome to your opinion.

  9. Peanut just giving Megatron his respect, never laying down believe that, looking forward to see that matchup this Sunday. Megatron is a beast, but peanut always hold his own………. Bears 27-17, Johnson will be shut down again.
