Franchise tag in play for Dolphins’ Sean Smith

The Miami Dolphins will be operating with a healthy dose of salary cap space this offseason, which should allow the team to retain core impending free agents while also being active on the open market. The Dolphins’ most valuable in-house free agent is arguably cornerback Sean Smith, who had a breakout season under first-year defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle in 2012.

According to Ben Volin of the Palm Beach Post, the Dolphins will “almost certainly” place the franchise tag on Smith if they can’t sign him long term before free agency commences. Volin does not consider fellow impending free agent Jake Long a realistic franchise-tag candidate after a poor season that ended on injured reserve. Long tore his triceps in early December, and the 2013 franchise number for offensive linemen is expected to be $15.365 million.

The franchise number for cornerbacks will be more affordable ($10-11 million), and Smith has missed just one game in his four-year career. The Dolphins would certainly prefer to lock up Smith with a lucrative extension. But either way, it sounds like he’s not going anywhere.

  1. Still too much for Smith (who I agree needs to be signed). What are the expected franchise numbers for other positions? I would think Starks may get tagged if that number is lower than the one for Smith.

He needs to learn how to catch the ball first

if he could he would be a reciever

  3. This guys to permanently be on the largest receiver on the other side. He can hold his own against most of them. Smaller guys with exceptional speed seem to make him look silly.

  4. I don’t see why they shouldn’t be able to lock him up long term. With Sean Smith, Reshad Jones, Chris Clemmons, and Richard Marshall (nickle) the Dolphins are one CB away from having a very solid secondary IMO

    Too bad they traded him

  6. I am a Dolphins fan and I have to say they should be checked for drugs if they franchise him. Just because you are the best player in a ragtag secondary (besides Reshad Jones) does not mean you are a great player. That money needs to be spent on very good/great players. And I think Long needs to go as well, not worth the investment. If you can resign either or both to reasonable contracts then fine.

  7. Sean Smith has been our (Dolphins) best CB since we drafted him & Vonte. Only thing is he can’t catch for crap & until this season he’s lacked on his ball skills. Bottom line sign him long term & only tag him if he gets higher offer. Non of our guys are franchise tag worthy imo

  8. Smith should not be franchised. There are plenty of CB’s that can drop interceptions just like him, no need to overpay for one.

  9. So we have Marshall and Dimitri Peterson for over 4. 5 mill each and we are going to TAG Smith?
That’s not going to happen. Or somebody is cut or restructure his contract, because that is a lot of money in 3 Averages guys.
I prefer to draft A CB an extend Rashard Jones NOW.

  10. I’m a dolphins fan and no way we use the tag on smith. They must be trying to scare him into accepting an extension. Yes he solid jut not franchise tag worthy .. That is saved for big jake

Excuse me, but are you OK?, not drugs in these days,?… C’mon what a Solid Secundary?…ask Andrew Luck a Rookie who create a record in Passing yards versus 85 % of the so named Solid Secunadary by you…Excuse me but You are nuts…You don’t know about Football..Change Sports Please

  12. I love how these posts say that Smith is not worth the tag! What gets me even more is all the love for Rashard Jones. Was it not just spring when every dolphin fan was saying we need to upgrade the safety spot. In fact it was listed as on of our key need areas last draft! Everyone take a breath. Smith held his own against some very good wr’s. his size makes him vulnerable against the smaller quicker wr’s. if we get a starter on the other side we have a great backfield with smith on the larger WR and our other starter on the deep man. I know everyone is high on Rashard Jones he may be good in coverage (where his ratings are coming from) but if you have watched the games lately he has taken some bad angles in the open field and when Rbs get open past the line. Just saying

  13. The Dolphins management and football folks are nuts, and they have been nuts for sometime now. Sean Smith’s play is close to horrifying especially when you actually view his play at the game. Television just does not let you see how oftened he is handled by opposing teams receivers.

  14. Smith is a solid number two corner. He deserves a contract similar to what Miami paid Richard Marshall last offseason and nothing more. If anybody thinks Ireland is going to over pay for any player then they have not paid attention to this orginization for the last five years.

Not every fan…just the ones not paying attention or parroting what other people say. I don’t think the Dolphins need a safety because the Jones/Wilson tandem is pretty good. (Wilson is a better safety than CB but injuries forced him into CB duties more often than he should have been. If they do look for one, Byrd (Bills) would fit well. The need last year was depth and losing Bell added to that.

  16. “Breakout Season”. Are you kidding me? I watched all 15 games and maybe compared to the worst corner in the NFL it was a “breakout season”. Sean Smith is an average CB at best by overall NFL standards. He has the size and potential to be an elite CB but he’s not there yet.

  17. What Smith lacks in talent he makes up for with sheer size, and the fact he is not liable to get beaten on many jump balls. I like him, and as a second(or third?) round pick, he has made good on his commitment to the Miami Dolphins; give the man his payday, and his long term deal

  18. I like Smith & would like to see him stay on the Dolphins. But not with the franchise tag. He’s not that good to be paid like a top-5 player at the position, which is really who you should spend the franchise tag on if you’re going to use it.
