Vontae Davis is the AFC defensive player of the week

For Vontae Davis, the 2012 season started with a trade from the Dolphins to the Colts. It ended with a defensive player of the week award.

Davis was named the AFC’s defensive player of the week for Week 17, after having two interceptions in the Colts’ win over the Texans. Davis’s first interception set up a drive no which the Colts scored a touchdown, and his second interception — in the end zone on a fourth-quarter pass intended for Andre Johnson — sealed the Colts’ win.

Davis is the third Colts cornerback to win defensive player of the week this year, following Darius Butler in Week 10 and Cassius Vaughn in Week 14. The Colts have also had the AFC offensive player of the week twice (Reggie Wayne in Week 5 and Andrew Luck in Week 9) and the special teams player of the week once (T.Y. Hilton in Week 12).

  1. I don’t think anybody saw the Colts coming in 2012. Talk about a team that over-achieves. They’re playing great football, and ad find a way to win. Props to Vontae Davis. We all knew he was talented, but he’s definitely the best player in the Colts secondary.

    Great job

  2. Good for Vontae. As a Colts fan, I was nervous when we traded with the Dolphins for him. And Vontae’s “weirdness” showed up on “Hard Knocks” and had me worried.

But he’s battled injury most of the season and was slow to come around…but the past few weeks for the Colts, he’s looked really good.

Really? Ever heard of a pro bowler named Antoine Bethea? Vontae is having a decent year. He gets at least one PI called on him every game. He has talent but he needs to learn how to better get away with all the grabbing and jostling he does. I will say he is the best (and fastest) pure cover guy we have. But Bethea is a much better player, tackler and safety than VD is a corner.

  4. One good week does not make a bad trade on Miami’s part. I wish this guy the best, but let’s see multiple performances like this next year with an injury free season along with who Miami picks with the 2nd rounder…then we can talk bad trade on one side or the other.

  5. I’m not a Colts fan nor a Titans fan, but how Zach Brown from the Titans who took not one but two interceptions to the house for touchdowns, one of 30 and one of 71 yards, from the linebacker position no less is BEYOND ME. Davis didn’t deserve this award at all. He was taken to school by Andre Johnson all game long. And no, not a Texans’ fan neither.

  6. Agreed Southbeachnorth. In addition to the two pick 6’s, Brown also had a QB sack in the game.

  7. Jeff Ireland paid a 1st for Vontae, then sold him for a late 2nd while creating a hole at the position. For this he is celebrated?

It’s like an arsonist getting congratulated for putting out a fire.

  8. What a joke that Davis got DP of the week. It SHOULD have gone to the Titans rookie sensation, Zach Brown. He recorded one sack, 4 tackles – 2 for a loss, 2 QB hits and two interceptions, returning both for touchdowns for a total of 109 int. return yards. How that doesnt scream Defensive Player of the Week is beyond me.
