Geno Smith selects Select Sports Group

Even in a draft class that is currently believed to lack high-end quarterbacks, the best quarterbacks in the class will attract plenty of attention and competition.

West Virginia’s Geno Smith has made his choice, hiring Erik Burkhardt and Jeff Nalley of Select Sports Group to handle his rookie deal, according to source with knowledge of the situation.

Smith emerged in September as the early favorite for the Heisman Trophy, with off-the-charts performances as the Mountaineers moved to 5-0.  But a five-game losing streak caused him to slide off the map, and the guy who once was presumed to be the top pick in the draft could now slide on draft day.

On Wednesday, word emerged that USC quarterback Matt Barkley has signed with CAA.  And those two firms will spend the next four months trying to position their respective clients to be taken higher in the draft than the other one.

Of course, getting the guy drafted as high as possible isn’t as important as it used to be, given the rookie wage scale.  Factors like marketing opportunities in a given city, the coaching staff, and the supporting cast become more important.

  1. Geno has potential but I have reservations about him as a day-one starter. I hope he manages to get drafted by a team that will groom him the old fashioned way: sign a veteran free agent and have him learn the game for a year before he sniffs the field, maybe giving him some garbage time action to get his feet wet. It’s a dying model, but I think it could work for Geno.

  2. The resume of Geno Smith is starting to remind me of Akili Smith from the QB Class of 1999.
Only time will tell if I am wrong.

  3. At least he was smart enough to not hire an uncle or a family “friend” to represent him.

  4. this Guy is not going to be a franchise QB in the NFL very overrated. I have Matt Barker higher on my drafts board. every one thinks he’s another RGlll more like another Byron’s leftwitch’s.

  5. Matt Barker?? Never heard of him….i know of a Matt Barkley and he is a glorified Mark Sanchez, just dont know who’s arm is stronger of those two.

Glennon and Murray will be 1st QBs off the board…Glennon due to his size and arm strength and Murray has some great qualities as well…his arm strength is a concern though.

  6. This Smith is so overrated its not even funny. If a team does its homework and still takes Smith I will feel sorry for them because they will be wasting a pick. He will be.a backup his entire career,
