Reports: Tom Gamble not sure thing for Jets G.M.

On Sunday, there were reports that indicated 49ers exec Tom Gamble was poised to become the next general manager of the Jets.

That may come to pass, but multiple reports from New York put Gamble’s hiring as less of a sure thing than it seemed during the weekend. Rich Cimini of reports that the Jets “are said to be focused on another candidate.” Falcons director of player personnel David Caldwell interviewed for the job last week and the team also has interviews scheduled Monday with Giants director of college scouting Marc Ross and their own Assistant General Manager Scott Cohen.

One of the reports that pointed toward Gamble joining the Jets centered on Gamble delaying an interview with the Chargers. Brian Costello of the New York Post reports that the interview was pushed back to Tuesday because of family reasons. Costello also reports that Gamble is still scheduled to meet with the Browns about their vacancy as well.

This could all be part of the dance that still winds up with Gamble in New York, of course, as the Jets do need to interview Ross or another minority candidate to satisfy the Rooney Rule before they can make any hire. However things come to pass, some enterprising t-shirt makers have just the thing to welcome the next Jets general manager to town.

  1. Looks to me it will be Scott Cohen. Why would the jets look to improve over the last 3 Super Bowl wins? Gotta have a guy that is okay with sexy wrecksy.

  2. Gamble would be crazy to jump to the Jets! To be saddled with Rex Ryan and a salary cap mess is already 2 strikes. Just like a coach you want to go where you can have success.

  3. I don’t have a real problem with the Rooney Rule, but I think it needs some tweaking.

    1) If your going to conduct an actual search, then I think all you need to do is offer an interview to a minority candidate, if he turns you down, he turns you down. You shouldn’t have to chase guys. I remember years ago Dennis Green was the go to guy for minority interviews. Eventually he just started turning them down because he new he was just getting a call because owners had to call a minority.

    2) You shouldn’t have to interview a minority candidate if you are not going to conduct a search. Example, Jerry Jones hiring Bill Parcells years ago. No search was being done, Parcells was the guy he wanted from the start. If Parcells had turned him down, then it gets opened up.

    From what I understand, the only time the Rooney Rule does not apply is if the coach is already on staff and has it in his contract that he is the coach in waiting. I.e. Jim Mora taking over for Holgrem in Seattle.

What bothers me about the “Rooney Rule” is if the team knows EXACTLY who they want being a HC or GM, and that person happens to be a minority, there is NO penalty not interviewing a white canidate, explain to me how that’s not predjudice….(I can already hear Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson out there somewhere telling me to shut the Hell up)

  5. The whole point of the Rooney Rule was that at the time qualified coaches like Tony Dungy and Lovie Smith weren’t even getting interviews, let alone HC jobs. To be honest, if your a qualified white, assistant coach, your going to get your shot at an interview. There is no need for a reverse Rooney Rule. Maybe I am contradicting my earlier post a little, but this is why I don’t have a big problem with the Rooney Rule, because at one time there was a need for it.

    I think that need has changed, and the rule could use some updating. An NFL owner is going to hire the guy that gives them the best chance to win, there is too much money involved. The only color they care about is green.

  6. San Francisco has had some very good drafts in recent years. Though most of the credit should go to Trent Baalke, I’m sure as the player personnel guy Gamble had a lot to do with it. The Jets are fools if they don’t hire this guy.

Lets be serious, what is the one and only thing an NFL franchise wants? Wins. What does wins get you? Money and profit. Do you really think NFL owners were standing there looking at potential candidates that they knew would win games for them, i.e. Tony Dungy, that they said “Hey this guy is extremely qualified and would win for us, but we cant hire him because he’s a minority.” Ok dude, get real. Seriously I think the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Go keep spewing your race card, see how far it gets you in life. The Rooney rule is in place for one reason only and thats to appease the people with hurt feelings like you. Joke

  8. Stay far away from the freak show that is the Jets. It’s like a blend of the bearded lady, the A-Team, Conan, the Muppets and Pee Wee Herman. Those things are all terrible by themselves… and you want to be G.M. over all of them?

  9. I’d be surprised if they land anyone good. That franchise is a mess in just about every way possible.

    Cap strapped, crummy QB’s and to top it off, they have to deal with Wrecks and Co. Not a great place to be.

  10. Just watch, the Jets will be contenders in a couple years.

    There will be 20 or so Cromarties running around in Jets uniforms in the next couple years. An endless supply of them, 2 or 3 new ones entering the league every year.

  11. cmon daubs. your post almost makes sense, except those people didnt look at minority candidates and think they were competent or prepared to handle the HC jobs. Most of the owners are old white men…which means they grew up during segregation and possibly still held some of those beliefs. i wont say it was either intentional or unintentional but the facts remain that these guys were not getting shots at advancement. Is there a logical explaination as to why it took so long for minority coaches to arrive? how about minority quarterbacks? are there any minority owners? is it because these guys are unqualified or incapable of handling these positions?
