In a conversation with the Philadelphia media after he was officially named the Chiefs’ head coach, Andy Reid reflected on his long tenure coaching the Eagles without criticizing anyone -- and without expressing regret for his most controversial decision.
Cautiously avoiding doling out blame for his final two disappointing seasons, Reid said that the decision to move offensive line coach Juan Castillo to defensive coordinator before the 2011 season may not have worked out, but that doesn’t mean he was wrong to try it.
“I don’t regret that decision at all,” Reid said of promoting Castillo, via Philly.com.
Maybe Reid is speaking as someone who tries to view every decision that fails as a learning experience, and therefore doesn’t feel any regrets over any decisions he made. But the reality is that Reid’s decision to move Castillo from offense to defense didn’t work, and when Reid fired Castillo during the 2012 season, he was acknowledging that he made the wrong call.
Nevertheless, Reid still respects Castillo and is expected to offer him a job on the Chiefs’ coaching staff. Reid may say he has no regrets about making Castillo his defensive coordinator, but it should go without saying that the job Reid gives Castillo in Kansas City will be coaching offense.
