D.C. mayor wants the Redskins to consider changing their name

AP

The mayor of Washington, D.C., would like the Washington Redskins to reconsider their nickname.

Mayor Vincent Gray said today that he’d like to explore the possibility of the Redskins (who currently play their home games in Landover, Maryland and have their offices in Ashburn, Virginia) moving back into the city. But he thinks that would be a tough sell in D.C. as long as the team has a nickname that is viewed as a racial slur.

“I think that if they get serious with the team coming back to Washington, there’s no doubt there’s going to have to be a discussion about that, and of course the team is going to have to work with us around that issue,” Gray said, via the Washington Post. “I think it has become a lightning rod, and I would be love to be able to sit down with the team . . . and see if a change should be made.”

Gray did not state categorically that changing the team name would be a requirement to moving back into the city, but he did express discomfort with having a divisive nickname for the team.

The franchise was founded in 1932 and called the Boston Braves, sharing a name and Braves Field with a baseball team. In 1933 the franchise moved to Fenway Park, which it shared with the Boston Red Sox, and so the team changed its name to the Boston Redskins. The team moved to Washington in 1937. The Redskins have been criticized for their nickname for decades, and although several American high schools and Miami University in Ohio have stopped using the Redskins name, franchise owner Daniel Snyder has shown no inclination to change.

  1. Ridiculous. I’m an Eagles fan, but I still think the Skins shouldn’t change a thing. They aren’t disrespecting Indians or the Indian culture, they are celebrating it – albeit in their own unique way.

Enough with being politically correct over absolutely every single issue.

  2. And why would they move into the city of DC?
Fed Ex field was built in 1997, and recently renovated. The only thing they need is a different playing surface…. idiot..

  3. I hate the redskins, but I hope they don’t change their name. Racial slur? Sorry. Not buying it. To allow oneself to be offended by something is a choice. Because one can always choose to be not offended….

  4. Ok you win mayor, we’ll consider it….hey guys should we change the name, ehh yeah let’s not…ok well we considered it and we decided not to change. You’re welcome.

  5. Man, the Washington Racially-Insensitive Nickname Football Club is having a rough week. It is almost as if the DC football scene spent 7 weeks in a parallel universe of success, praise, and hope only to be jarringly shocked back into reality this week. This is the Washington Redskins we all know…welcome back to the punching bag.

  6. If I were the Redskins, I’d change it after this. From Washington Redskins to Landover Redskins. Teach that D.C. idiot a lesson.

The Redskins don’t even play in or have their offices in D.C., no need to use the name. Right?

  7. I hate political correctness, but it is probably time they changed it. Redskins is much more offensive than Warriors, which Marquette changed their name from, which I found to be profoundly more ridiculous.

  8. Absolutely. Then since I’m of Irish descent I want ND to change their nickname as well as I feel offended by the negative portrayal by their mascot. I can do way more push-ups than he can.

  9. Washington was the last NFL team to integrate, and only when the team became a perennial loser did the team get Bobby Mitchell and other African Americans to compete. In other words, Washington had a monetary incentive to change back then. There is no monetary incentive to change the name today. Justice (aka political correctness) has no monetary value to the franchise. So good luck with that, mayor.

  10. Good point Mayor, a suitable name that would truly be representative of the city would be, The Washington Criminals………. that covers those who actually commit traditional crimes in the district, as well as those who are elected to do so.

  11. Says the mayor that is currently under investigation for campaign finance fraud. The only lightning rod is Vince. Just do us all a favor and resign already. What a pathetic embarrassment.

  12. Oh please. I live in DC and have never heard a single person, American Indian or otherwise, complain about the Redskins name. I’m sure you could find someone, somewhere around here who doesn’t like it, but to say that the Redskins won’t move back to DC because of there’s some mythical mob waiting to protest is asinine.

  13. why dont u go after Redman brand chewing tobacco? o yea thats rigjt cuz that wouldn’t get any publicity. Dont we have better things to worry about?

  14. Given that the team plays in Maryland and practices in Virginia, I’m sort of missing how this has anything to do with him.

Also, he should spend his time being more concerned about the various ethics scandals he and his cronies have been embroiled in since he took office instead of issues involving a football team that left D.C. two decades ago?

    Thanks very much,

  15. The only reason the skins are not in DC is because of ex mayor sharon kelly other than that a stupid nick name would never keep them out of DC.

  16. So the Redskins will just never come back to DC. Why would they need to, the new stadium is awesome.

  17. Football is so big the politicians simply cannot bear to leave it alone. Bunch of jerks and crooks, if you ask me. Mayor, mind your business!!

  18. It’s Miami University. Not University of Miami at Ohio…not University of Miami (OH).

    Just Miami University.

  19. Ladies & Gentlemen, your Washington/Landover Cowboys!!!!! Has a nice ring to it don’t you think?

But then all the actual living cowboys would get pissed off.

Oh hell, just make it the Obamas!!!!

  20. The Bullets became the Wizards, and that name was much less “offensive”.

Unless you are Native American, your opinion on this really doesn’t count or matter.

If they do change it, I recommend the Generals, and make that team that intentionally loses to the Globetrotters 200 times a year find a new name… or just go away.

Thank you for fixing it 😉

  22. Well Washington was the city that had the Bullets change their name to the Wizards.

They should leave the name alone and quite being overly sensitive about these kind of things. It’s clear the name is not intended to be a slur or have any meaning of disrespect.

I mean what kind of person names and has their team after something they hate? If you were picking a name of a team it’s in general something you like or respect or represents something positive about an area.

  23. DC the warzone of us and this moron is worried about the name of the redskins..go hack to sleep and go skins!!

  24. Why would Snyder even bother? He and his crew own the stadium and the parking lots around the stadium so they make plenty of money without having to deal with D.C. and losing out to the METRO. They should tell the mayor to pound sand

    ____________________________________

Well, it’s either that or tell the truth that the ridiculously high tax rates guarantees that they will stay in Virginia, and never mover their offices to D.C., or Maryland for that matter. They’ll never change their name. The Washington Stallions or Bobcats just won’t work.

  26. There is a “Fighting Irish” and nobody ever seems to complain about that. I actually attended Miami University and am part Cherokee and have zero issue with a football team or school calling themselves the “Redskins”. I can see why a University would change it’s name, but the NFL Redskins are a business. If you don’t like it don’t watch it and get over it already.

  27. Put me also in the category of people that don’t really care too much about being politically correct, but don’t really think it would be a terrible idea to change the name.

“Redskin” may not seem to the majority of people to be a racial slur; doesn’t change the fact that a racial slur is exactly what it is.

I know plenty of folks with native american heritage, including my own family. The general consensus is that it’s not a big deal, just a little on the tasteless side.

It’s not a big deal but at the same time probably the fact that it’s a racial slur also puts it in the category of ‘probably not a big deal to change and put the discussion in the past’ either.

While you’re at it, fix your field.

  28. So because the only affiliation to DC is the TV market, the mayor thinks he has any pull? The Giants dont play in NY, The Cowboys dont play in Dallas, etc.

worry about real problems or is some rich Indian donating money to your campaign?

  29. I am 40 years old and have lived in the DC area my entire life. With that said I can never recall a time where a Mayor of DC ever had anything important to say.

  30. Does anyone really even use that term when describing Native Americans? I’ve never heard anyone call anyone a redskin or even refer to someone as a redskin in my entire life. I honestly think most people associate it with the football team from Washington instead of a racial slur.

  31. Give me a break-Lets just call them the Redmen, and all the women can can sue the team for sexual discrimination.

  32. Less offensive nicknames have been changed over the last dozen years. Unlike Warriors, Illini, Chippewas, even Indians, it really is blatantly racist. But, Native-Americans have ZERO juice in this country (save the ability to open casinos wherever they choose), so this conversation is going nowhere.

  33. If they hope to rename (which is beyond foolish to me) and move to DC (which makes no sense since the majority of their fanbase is in Maryland and everyone under the sun avoids DC like the plague) I hope they pick a name representative of the city. They already have the capitals and nationals. I say the Washington “I’ve been driving in circles for thirty minutes now an keep ending up on K street next to the Occupy Camp that smells like BO and old hotdogs.”

  34. What a joke, haven’t considered changing it for years. Not like we are going to consider after the mayor wants us to. He doesnt need to worry, by the time our FedEx field contract expires in 2027 and we move back to D.C. he wont be mayor.

  35. This argument is constantly brought up and is no closer to being valid. There is no reason to change the name. The nickname is about organizational pride and not about deriding or offending anyone. It is just the PC culture overreacting to anything and everything that someone might find offensive. It is absurd. Some people like to complain and others want to be the hero and champion a “cause” whatever it may happen to be. These people are the problem. Political correctness is out of control.

  36. I don’t think the name will be changed, but if they do keep the colors and the logo and just change it to Washington Potomacs or Americans or something else that works as both a DC-centric and native american idea.

Doesn’t matter anyway Gray will be in jail by the time the skins are ready to leave FedEx in 2027.

  37. Are we back to this again?

Really? Aren’t there more things in the world to change? There are people who are suffering and dying out there. A day doesn’t go by where someone’s feeling aren’t hurt. That’s the problem with this country, the woosification of our society…

  38. How absolutely ridiculous our society is becoming….this soccer mom generation is ruining everything down to the names of teams…i am so disgusted….

  39. I must have been living under a log somewhere because I didn’t know the name “Redskins” was offensive. What have we come to in this country? My high school was known as the “Indians” and we were very proud to honor that heritage. Our neighboring high school is the “Red Raiders” and I’ve never thought of that as offensive. Move over Tiki! I’m flabbergasted!

  40. So stupid. Why not instead live up to any if the treaties that America hasn’t done. Land ownership being the first. I think that would go further then changing a name of a football team.

  41. Yeah, I highly doubt this billion dollar franchise is going to change the name that its had for 80 years just because a small portion of people think that it is offensive. If that’s the case, why haven’t we just given all the land that we stole back? Yeah I guess that’s where everyone stops backing the NA and stop thinking its offensive, right?

  42. Eastern Michigan University athletic teams changed their name from the Hurons, a proper Native American tribe name to the Eagles. Why?

Wayne State University athletic teams changed their name from the Tartars to the Warriors. Who were they going to offend? Nomads in Mongolia or Uzbekistan?

The team name “Redskins” is very, very offensive and I’m surprised it has survived waves of political correctness.

  43. All this PC nonsense makes me want to go on the warpath……how about just changing the name to the Washington White Liberals!

  44. How about the Washington Pelicans, and change the uniforms to a powder puff blue or pink. Or go old school and bring back the Washington Bullets

  45. I think if I wasn’t so used to hearing the name “Redskins” I would probably think it was a pretty offensive slur. Hearing it thousands of times has probably de-sensitized me to what would probably be a pretty shocking name if I had never heard it. I could not imagine that any team would name itself after a racial term like that anymore, even if it was a term that was not clearly offensive.

On the other hand, it is also my understanding that most memers of the various American Indian communities in the US really don’t have a problem with the team’s name or the use of Indians as mascots generally, as long as thier depiction is not blatantly disrespectful.

  46. The one thing I am more sick of than political correctness is people who are sick of political correctness.

I hope it isn’t politically incorrect of me to hate people who hate political correctness.

  47. My high school alta mater had the Redskins name too before we changed had to change it for the same reasons mentioned in the article.

Ultimately, we ended up changing our name to….. the Raiders. lol

  48. What of the American population is American Indian these days anyway. This is from the 2010 US Census:

Indian Americans are citizens of the United States of Indian ancestry and comprise about 3.18 million people, or ~1.0% of the U.S. population

Stop with the sensitivity. No disrespect to the true native Americans, I’m 1/32 Indian and I have no problems whatsoever with the name.

  49. Names like this have been wiped out in college unless the school gets the written permission of a particular tribe (i.e. Florida State Seminoles). “Redskins” is an offensive term and I’m surprised the league hasn’t already fixed this. Maybe it’s because there aren’t that many Native Americans left… but it is offensive and should be changed. We’d never tolerate a team called the Mississippi Blackskins…

No offense intended here. I just want to put it in perspective.

  50. if the Indian tribes don’t care why should we? it’s a cool name and not meant to be offensive.

  51. I’m a Redskins fan, but changing the name seems more problematic than trying to associate the name with a different symbol. I completely get what the issue is, it is a racist name, but that isn’t why the fans of the team love them, it’s their history.

  52. If it weren’t for sports teams using awesome native american tribe names and slurs nobody in today’s world who isnt native american would give a damn about the native American culture period. If they want their names back I want the rights to all their casinos. They have already ruined several college teams must they also attack our pro sports teams as well? Also I don’t understand how they find it offensive. Should I be insulted that the celtics Vikings or Canadians use my heritage as their team nick name? To me they aren’t using the terms to hurt anyone. It’s all ridiculous.

  53. I’m a Norwegian American and I am personally offended at the way the Minnesota Vikings portray my ancestors. Have you seen their mascot? He looks all big and scary! Oh wait, they’re actually honoring Scandinavians by naming their team after such a respected and passionate warrior.

This redskins nonsense has to stop. And people need to stop being so sensitive.

  54. Okay Ive totally missed something! I thought that when I heard about a team in DC needing to change their offensive name that they were talking about the Wizards. Still don’t know how chocolate city went for that one!

  55. And in related news, the people of Washington are thinking of changing their Mayor…….

  56. When asked for comment, Snyder simply stated: “If we’re forced to change the name of the franchise, you can just go ahead and bury my heart at wounded knee”

  57. the Washington Native Americans? But seriously, if the mayor is offended, ask him to consider paying Native Americans some kind of repairations along with changing the name…I bet he’d lose interest in being so Politically Correct…the name Redskins isn’t really offensive anyway.

Love love love your comment! Spot on, buddy. Comment of the day!

  59. How about The Washington People Indigenous to the North America. That or something even more stupid.

  60. “The Washington Piscataway” has a nice ring to it. No one is talking about a complete rebranding other than the name. You don’t see the Chiefs changing their name. Heck, you could just call the team “The Washington Natives” and keep the same team logo.

  61. I think the name with change with the next few decades. Bottom line, in this politically correct world, it is just unacceptable. I think a great name would be the “Pigskins” and make the logo a football and all the faithful could still call them the ‘Skins.

  62. I guess when the feds are investigating your campaign finances and everyone around you resigns in scandal. You decide to pick fights with chick fila and now the skins. Don’t worry the skins are not coming back to that hell hole.

  63. Dan Snyder should Phil Leotardo this request….

“I’ve considered it, and rejected it.”

  64. I’m from an area a decent amount of native americans and the past couple years most local high schools had to change thier names.

Funny thing is I’m pretty sure all those people who publicly protested against using those names weren’t even native american.

  66. There was something ironic about a team with a positive Native American symbol beating a team with racist connotations in their logo.

  67. Perhaps he should be worrying about his insane murder rate before worrying about a team nickname.
Are these people really that stupid or do they just pretend to be? (rhetorical question)

  68. A “redskin” is actually the derogatory name given the the bodies of dead Native American fighters. The name is more than just the Irish or the Indians. these we men that were killed trying to defend their land…just a thought

  69. Headline should read “DC Mayor wants to ensure the Redskins do NOT move back to DC”

After he gets thrown out of office by the FBI or local authorities for all his campaign shenanigans, paying BS candidates to heckle the incumbent and dilute the vote he wont worry about the team name.

Also, using the Wizards as an example for anything is just a bad idea

  70. Things are apparently running very smoothly in DC and the mayor doesn’t have enough to do.

Overheard at the mayor’s lunch table:
“Hey I got an idea, maybe we can get the football team to change their name to the GRAYskins!”

  71. One thing you’ve got to admit it’s pretty stupid when you have teams NOT playing their home games in the cities (or states)they are named after. New York Giants (Meadowlands,New Jersey) Washington Redskins (Landover, Maryland) and New England Patriots (Foxboro,Mass.) .

  72. A lot of people think it isn’t offensive (including me).

Some people say it isnt offensive, that DC is honoring native americans.

I think the second part is too far. You can’t with a straight face, tell me that the Washington Cotton Pickers, with a depiction of a black man on it, would be considered “honoring” African Americans. Thats a WAY over the top generalization to illustrate the point. but that’s essentially the jist of it.

  73. Ranchers and miners stole Indian lands and tried to exterminate whole tribes…. naming a team after these groups of racists is truely offensive.

Don’t try and compare “redskins” to “indians”. Get real.

  75. This is just beyond stupid. The previous mayor gets caught on video tape doing blow in a hotel room with hookers and what happens next?

    He gets re-elected.

If that doesn’t speak to the stupidity of the Washington DC voter, tell me what does? It’s pretty hard to offend stupid people, they lack the intelligence to comprehend the insult in the first place so why is the mayor of Washington DC concerned about this?

  76. If anyone should be offended by the Washington Redskins name it should be anyone named “Washington”.

  77. Why dont we just call them the ” Head Coach Leaves His Players In To Long and Lets Them Tear Their ACL and LCL Skins” That’s much more politically correct!

  78. Kinda figure the comments section would go like this. But that nickname is really, really racist. We wouldn’t stand for the Blackskins or the Yellowskins so why is this one OK?

  79. Not a skins fan or a Native American but this is stupid. Where’s Marion Barry? At least he didn’t concern himself with such nonsense!!!

  80. The Mayor wants the Redskins back in DC…. and that’s how he starts the conversation?

Ironically, that’s how the conversation ends.

  83. Baseball has teams like this too, The Indians, The Yankees, Then there’s also teams like, The Rebels… I could go on. Does every team name have to be after an animal for goodness sake????

  84. The name is from an older time with different attitudes. If you were starting from scratch, it should be changed.

    However:

    1. DC pols have been pontificating about this for years. It’s not remotely a news item, assuming “news” means some new development worth reporting. Of course, if it means “hey, give me something to generate web page hits,” then that’s different.

    2. Just like before, it’s not happening. Period.

    3. Gray is a senile blithering idiot. In addition to either being oblivious about his campaign operations or lying about what his staffers were doing (campaign law violations – long story, see numerous WaPo articles), he has no sense of reality regarding his or DC’s control over the situation. Honestly, he makes rocks look smart.

  85. Someone said

Wayne State University athletic teams changed their name from the Tartars to the Warriors. Who were they going to offend? Nomads in Mongolia or Uzbekistan?

Yes I agree, Tartars would only offend some Mongolians or South Odessians. However Wayne State has offended persons with disabilities. IN 2004, they deported a conference goer because the person needed assistance for mobility. So much for politically correctness. This is more offensive than the Redskins name will ever be.

  86. What a joke. The name was given for the fierce fighting style of the Native Americans. People should take it in the way it was intended rather than being offended. Political Correct has gone too far.

  87. Oh please. I live in DC and have never heard a single person, American Indian or otherwise, complain about the Redskins name.

I’m sure that’s true. But that’s also because there are no native Americans living even close to the ‘American’ capital. (History might tell us something about this…) Go out west, you might see some, but they sure aren’t going to be hanging the local suburban redneck bar. If you do go out west, you probably won’t see them talking about football, or even living well.

  88. It’s nice of Mr. Grey to take some time away from defending himself against his corruption charges to make a statement about the Redskins.

  89. If the redskins have to change their name, I propose the following changes to other franchises in other leagues as well. NFL
jets. in new york? bad taste. lions jaguars bengals have to go as those animals are not native to the Americas. raiders gone. the only raiding going on in oakland is done by the police. chiefs done. as we do not live in tribes. vikings never made their way to Minnesota. when was the last time you saw a bear in Chicago? Nine year old news. Once upon a time they enslaved African Americans, too. What you say may or may not have happened; it’s unfortunate if it did. In any case, it just ain’t that way anymore. And I can tell you’re not Native American or you’d understand exactly how demeaning the term “redskin” is.

  99. Since naming your team after a valiant warrior who was ultimately defeated, who’s spirit lives on today is apparently offensive, I say we go the opposite route. No more Vikings, Redskins, whatever.

Uhhh, last time I checked Foxboro, MA is part of New England, Mr. Geography Scholar.

  109. I had read a few years ago that Snyder and/or some team officials had patented the name and logo designs for another name for a football team…

    “Washington Warriors”

I suppose they did that in case the firestorm got too great or something in the future but I definitely remember hearing and reading that a few years ago for what it’s worth…

  110. Maybe the mayor should change his name. Gray, gives the impression that all elderly people are thieving politicians

  111. I’m offended by the name Washington Redskins, too. It’s disgraceful.

They should just call themselves the Redskins.

Patriot42 says: I think those that live in DC should change their names to leeches.

I live in the District. The statement is too general and can be easily taken the wrong way. What exactly are you trying to say?
    —–

He’s saying that the majority of people in the DC metropolitan area either work for the Federal government or for companies that do business with the federal government. Either way, they are leeching off the American taxpayer. BTW, he’s right.

  113. How about the Politicians stay away from benign things as sports team nicknames and fix the corruption and wasteful spending that permeates so much of all forms of government. Leave the Redskins be the Redskins

  114. Being a Ravens fan, I do get the identity problem with being DC’s team, training in VA, and playing in MD. Make up your mind!. But, don’t change your name.

  115. Mascots are proud symbols. Thats why you use an Indian Warrior or a Viking etc. They are not something you name your team to degrade it. These critics are taking the name wrong.

  116. “He’s saying that the majority of people in the DC metropolitan area either work for the Federal government or for companies that do business with the federal government. Either way, they are leeching off the American taxpayer. BTW, he’s right.”

As a contractor who’s number 1 client is the government, I’m one of those leeches and I agree with you.

  117. First of all I am 1/4 Cherokee and not offended by the nickname.

I am 3/4 anglo and live in Texas. I am not offended by the Texans name nor the Cowboys.

That said, if the white folks had not played such a great game of Cowboys and Indians there might be a lot more people complaining about the name.

  118. Washington Redskins–very inappropriate.

    Landover Redskins–fixed

On second thought, there are probably more Washingtons in Washington that Redskins. How about the Washington Washingtons?

  119. I have been campaigning for years to have the Cowboys change their name to the Cowpersons. Let’s face it, the Cheerleaders are a bigger draw than the team at this point.

  120. I am French from the south of France, so should I be offended by the fact that the New Orleans Saints have le fleur de lys as their symbol? I think this entire thing is silly. Teams are named things that we like, not degrade.

I like the idea one guy said about changing the logo of the Redskins to a potato. Or I say change it to a red cabbage. Now no one can be offended, everyone likes food.

1 Yes Foxboro is part of New England as is all of Massachussettes.
2 The NY Giants were always NY, the reason they are not called NJ is originally they were playing in Yankee stadium and then the Meadowlands was built to house both the Jets and the Giants. Also The Meadowlands is right over the NY border.
3 Redskins are called Washington, the same reason that when I just went to a PhD residency (I am a doctoral student) in Arlington in Crytal city near Reagan National Airport they called it Washington because it is part of the neighbouring DC area.

  122. Way to go Mayor Gray. This issue is WAY more important than the rampant black on black crime that makes your city such a shining light.

  123. I love the “well I’m 1/40th native american and I don’t have a problem with the name”. I hope you know how ridiculous you sound.

For the record the name shouldn’t be changed, but stop calling them the Washington Redskins, they have nothing to do with D.C.

  124. The Native folks who are acting all upset about this need to step back a minute and think:

No one would deliberately name a team something he thought was a racial slur. It just doesn’t make sense to do so, therefore Mr Marshall would not have done it.

Everyone who has his or her undies all in a bunch over this needs to stop, take a deep breath, realize this is really a non-issue, and get on with their lives.

  125. edithpiaf51,
“I am French from the south of France, so should I be offended by the fact that the New Orleans Saints have le fleur de lys as their symbol?

Are you seriously comparing the two? The term “Redskins” is, has been, and always will be a blatantly racial slur against a group of people. There is absolutely no comparison here – how do you not realize this?

Never saw any Indians in DC Before

Speaking of which, maybe we should get that baseball team in Cleveland to change their name to “Native Americans.” Or, change the logo to a picture of a gas station owner. As it is now though, there is no correlation between the picture and the team’s name. And I’m pretty sure calling Native Americans “Indians” is equally offensive.

  127. Just call them the Foreskins.

Oh wait…. the Cowboys already have that one locked up.

  128. Mayor Gray has no leg to stand on here. The Redskins name is a good name. Period. The only ones offended are the self-anointed intellectual class who think they know more than they do.

  129. I’m sure any name change will have to go through the Senate and the House. Which means nothing will get done.

  130. Nice timing Gray. Right after 1st playoff appearance in 5 years and the day of the biggest knee surgery in the history of sports. Trying to get in the national spotlight?? We know you don’t care about the name Redskins, you only care about the name Vincent Gray

  131. The term ‘Redskin’ is in fact a racial slur, a pejorative, or whatever you want to call it, from way back in the day. However, in naming their team after them, they are actually honoring them. America went through a period of great reverence for Native Americans which still exists today. When they chose the name, they weren’t thinking in the terms that hopefully most of us think in today. They wanted a name that connoted a fierce warrior. In that way, it honors them even though the name had been used as a pejorative by the prior generation.

This name reflects the transformation of American society when you really think about it. That is why they should keep it.

  132. I don’t see where the name “Redskins” is any different than “Chiefs”, “Braves”, “Indians”, etc. I think any team name can be offensive to someone who takes it that way. Aren’t there much more important things to worry about? I’m one-eighth Native American and I have no problem with the name whatsoever.

  133. Given the historically superb contracts doled out by ownership (Fat Albert, anyone?) and the proximity to our remarkably efficient Federal HQ, jumble the letters somewhat to reveal the eternal truth: the Washington Red Inks.

  134. Are you seriously comparing the two? The term “Redskins” is, has been, and always will be a blatantly racial slur against a group of people. There is absolutely no comparison here – how do you not realize this?

First of all I was kidding, I was demonsrating how silly this whole thing is. I think politically correctness is a damn waste of time. I think we need to stop wasting time on this sillinees

  135. Go to an Indian Reservation and start calling the residents “Redskins”, see what kind of reaction you get and then tell me it is not a racist name. It would be like going to Compton or Harlem and spewing the N-word.

I doubt a Texan would be offended by being called one, nor would a Cowboy or a Chief. It would be like calling someone from New York a New Yorker, someone who works at a bank a Banker, or a highly ranked military officer a General. So give up the comparisons. It makes you all look ignorant and uninformed.

(side note- the city had nothing to do with the Bullets being renamed the Wizards. It was Abe Pollin’s decision alone because he didn’t want his legacy to be associated with violence. Here is a quote right after the name change:
“I just came back from Israel, where I attended the funeral of my good friend, Prime Minister [Yitzhak] Rabin,” Pollin said. “My friend was shot in the back by bullets. The name Bullets for a sports team is no longer appropriate…..”)

  136. This mayor is a clown and a demagogue. He is using the publicity from RGIII and the redskins success this year to draw attention to his political base. He is a symbol with not only what’s wrong with Washington, but what’s wrong with our political system.

Does he think that the Redskins are going to change their names? Don’t think so. It doesn’t matter even if the city comes back begging for a stadium, Snyder will stay in MD or go to Virginia.

Glad to see that the old political game of a attacking sports teams works while your own administration is under fire for corruption charges and the city is falling apart. Take up the standard though and fight the political battles that really mean something though Mayor. Because we know changing the name from Bullets to Wizards dropped the crime rate and was a major reason the murder rate was at an all time high and continues to be in the top 10.

  137. I thought this country, as well as many of us on these forums beleived in the Constitution, & the rights of every man, woman, & child. Does this beleif that we all seem to have, exclude Dan Snyder? Is it not his right to name his team whatever he chooses? I mean why demand that a man give up his rights to satisfy yours? I am from the deep south where racism tends to be more common, but I have never heard anyone, white, black, or native american complain about “Redskin”… furthermore, my Grandparents on my fathers side were more than half Indian… I just dont think it is a racist term…

  138. The name is a slur, there are just fewer Native Americans around than many other ethnic groups so people don’t realize the name is offensive. It’s not a tribe name like the Hurons or Seminoles. Or a nationality like the Irish. It’s not celebratory, like the Braves. It’s derogatory. They might as well be called the scalpers. It would be like the Spurs being called the fence jumpers or the wetbacks.

  139. johnnyballsack is right on.

You don’t think ‘Redskin’ is a racist term? Then drive into an Indian Reservation and use it. Trepidation? Why?

Redskin = Blackskin. There’s no difference. If you think Indians don’t mind Redskin, then you must also think black people wouldn’t mind being called blackskin.

Chiefs, Braves, and Warriors are not the same as Redskin.

Just because the term isn’t offensive to you doesn’t mean it isn’t offensive.

    I’ve been a DC resident since 1988.

  140. Harold pretty much nailed it. Native american reference doesn’t automatically make it offensive.

But if you think the term “Redskin” isn’t offensive, then you’re likely not one, or too hung up on tradition and sentimentality to do the right thing.

  141. ok i agree with another poster. If everyone is so intent on doing the right thing, being pollitically correct and all, lets not just change the name of a football team, that aint nearly enough, everyone that has a deed to land, how about give them up. Let’s give their land back, change the name of the Redskins and issue a public apology & pay them for our forefathers stealing from them. While you’re at it, pay another race for opressing their ancestors that worked the stolen land. Or… just leave everything where its at, and strive to not ever let it happen again, and accept that changing a name wont change what happened.

  142. According to testimony for a Senate committee by Sen. Nighthorse (I think he’s dead now) the term Redskin has nothing to do with skin color but it goes back to the days when there were bounties on Indians and you could get paid for killing & scalping (that’s the red skin) them.

So yeah, the term is probably a little offensive and most people don’t even know why.

  143. Why not confuse everybody? The Wizards had a name change a while back. So their old name is available. Just change it from Redskins to Bullets.

  144. Not gonna happen.

Look at our history books and you get little discussion about native americans and they’re place in history beyond thanksgiving.

Most people generally don’t know much history so they aren’t offended by it.

There also aren’t enough American Indians left to do anything about it.

  145. To those of you who are opposed to the idea of changing the name: if a team was called the Washington Cracker Jacks or the Washington Chinamen, would you also think this is too “politically correct”?

  146. OK so the guy isn’t dead but he did say the red skins were the bloody scalps of the injuns…

  147. As someone of Indian decent, I do not find the name offensive. I’m a huge Redskins fan. We love our team name, our logo emblem and our colors. We don’t need DC. It’s nothing but a rundown criminal element. The stadium is just fine where it’s at. We don’t need to go into DC and worry about getting shot, mugged, car jacked or anything else while just trying to go to a football game. If they did build a stadium, it would be in the worse area imaginable and no thank you!!

  148. I’m a Native man and do not find this team name offensive. In fact, I cheer for the Redskins. What other race is a professional sports team name? HAIL

  149. If the Redskins are planning to move to Washington DC, how about renaming the team the Washington Troughfeeders? Or maybe, the Washington Fiddlers (like Nero)?

  150. It’s sad how someone wanting to change a nickname which is little used anywhere as it has a racist base and offends a large group of people is dismissed as “PC”. The Anti-PC movement is many times more powerfuil than the politically correct movement yet these anti-PC types see themselves as quaint little victims of an imaginary majority. Why wouldn’t we change a nickname that offends a race of people? There’s so many other choices.

  151. As a former season ticket holder, I can tell you that I always held my breath leaving RFK until we were out of SE DC. Whenever we saw a car that had broken down along I-295 it was always completely stripped down. One could only wonder what might have happened to its driver and/or passengers.

The franchise is just fine where they are, and FedEx Field is a quality facility. No reason even to consider moving back into DC.

  152. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that my grandmother was 100% Cherokee Indian and she was a huge Redskins fan. She had no problem with the name.

  153. If the Redskins have to change their name then the Seahawks must also since they offend all birds. Seaweeds would be much improved.

  154. This names need to change! How fast would the team name change if it was the Crackers or Negros? If that was the case every one would be pissed and it would change so quickly. So why is this different? Just change the team name to the Natives and it would be fine…or try White Trash..or Black Skins.

  155. Isn’t it funny how the city of DC would be worried about a nickname??? Don’t they have other issues to worry about that are more important? By the way, Washington DC is the city that watched the most porn in the US. Not to mention the corrupt politicians ruining our great nation. But yet, they are worried about a football nickname that has been around for centuries. Really???

  156. I am what most of you would call Native American. We call ourselves Cherokees. My dad is a 4/4 Cherokee and has been a Redskin Fan all of his life. I have no problem with the name or the logo. What I have a problem with is the continued encroachment of Indian owned lands. If you think the injustices( to include Genocide) by the American Govt toward s the indigenous population was over back in the Wild West days think again.

  157. Most Native Americans are deeply insulted by Redskins, and other similarly insensitive sports nicknames. How would you like it if New England were the Drunken Leprechauns or Atlanta the Redneck Crackers?? I’m not PC at all, read my Username… I’m just not racist.

  158. News Flash, The Redskins play in Maryland for a reason. They have no inclination or any valid reason to move back to DC. This reminds me of the Arlington Cowboys, The Mayor of Dallas told Jerry he would not get one dime of support for his Palace. He built it anyways, didn’t he?
