Norv Turner to join Browns staff as offensive coordinator

After the Cleveland Browns named Carolina offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski as their new head coach Wednesday night, the Browns have already begun adding to their new coaching staff.

According to Peter Schrager of FOX Sports, the Browns are expected to hire former San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner as their new offensive coordinator. The Chargers fired Turner on Dec. 31.

Chudzinski served as assistant head coach and tight ends coach for the Chargers under Turner from 2009-2010. It will be Turner’s fifth stop as an offensive coordinator. Turner was the offensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys from 1991-1993, the Chargers in 2001, the Miami Dolphins from 2002-2003 and the San Francisco 49ers in 2006.

  1. Lots of negative comments about Chudzinski…probably the same amount as the hiring of Harbaugh in SF a few years ago (just sayin’) but this Browns fan is really looking forward to seeing what this brings. All I want is come December, when they show the playoff graphic on TV, the Browns to be under “in the hunt”…that’s really all I want. Is that too much to ask????

  2. Who is hiring him, the new head coach or the front office? Why do I get the feeling Chud is nothing but a two year puppet?

  3. BFD!!!!! These moves get us no closer to winning than we were before. I guess Jimmy was the one who hired Derrick Dooley at Tenneesse too. Get out of town before the fans burn the stadium down, RED NECK!!!!!

  4. That is a big move. Not the best head coach but is a hell of an offensive coordinator.

  5. Cleveland, is that the best he can do right now.
I hope it was for one year.

    oh boy!

  6. This is the hire that the Jets should had made. Which shows why the Jets will continue to be dysfunctional….

  7. What’d mularky do in jax? He ran a mediocre offense in Tenn. turner is overrated.marty was a better coach. Chud’s offense was average in Carolina this yr too. Mediocre all around. Browns will finish below .500 in that division for next 2 yrs

  8. I can’t believe I’m saying this but this is a very smart move on part of the Browns. Norv is one those guys who is an inadequate Head Coach, but he’s always been a great OC.

  9. Great hire! I think we all agree that Norv Turner can coach offense…it is the added responsibilities of defense and special teams that crosses him up. Good luck Norv.

  10. I was not really happy with the HC hire. I thought their were better guys out there. But making Norv OC makes me feel much better. Norv is a great OC and can help Chud with his experience. Now keep Dick Juron or get a better DC. I do not want Rob Ryan.

  11. Now THIS is a hire Browns fans can get excited about. Norv Turner is an excellent OC.

And since he has proven to be such a terrible HC, it’s not like they have to worry about him bolting as soon as he has a little success.

  12. Solid hire on the offensive side. Norv is like wade Phillips, not the greatest head coach but not many better at coordinator. I was hoping he would come back to Dallas and call the offensive plays but now I can secretly root for the brownies

  13. Don’t know if the HC will turn out to be a good hire, but Norv as the OC is a great hire!

  14. Cleveland really has something going now. With Norv running the offense and Dick running the defense who needs a head coach? Look out AFC north. A bengals fan.

  15. That’s a good start, but the bigger decision is who is going to be the DC. Here’s to hoping the Browns stick with Dick Jauron who has done an amazing job of getting the most out of the talent he was given.

  16. While there may be little media/fanboy sex appeal here, as a Browns fan I think these are solid hires. Chud is a solid offensive coach and (unlike Pat Shurmur) didn’t get the job because he’s someone else’s nephew.

Chud’s been around the NFL a long time, and I’m not worried about the absence of prior head coach experience (think John Harbaugh and Andy Reid, both of whom also had no prior head coaching experience). As many have pointed out, success as a cllege (or CFL) head coach does not necessarily directly translate into the NFL.

Hiring a new head coach is always a crapshoot.

  17. Don’t like the Chud hire, but this makes it a little better. Now if they can retain Jauron as DC and not be allergic to free agency, I can be OK with it.

  18. Norv Turner is a waste of space…..He needs to retire and give it up….Aikman and the boys ain’t walking through that door anymore….Browns are doomed…..

  19. Kansas City is doing a good job of quickly rebuilding its coaching staff. I think a lot of teams were interested in Turner for OC.

  20. ok brownies, now this is a step in the right direction on the offensive side of the ball…I’m sure doggpound fans are finally breathing a sigh of relief..especially over all the years of bad decisions. Brownies made a good decision this time around…congrats to the Browns and their fans!

  21. This guy is a brilliant play caller, he took Alex Smith off the scrap heap and made him a viable to good NFL quarterback before Smith regressed after Norv left. Good HC choice also…things looking bright for all you old Fair Hooker fans!

  22. Shook my head at the hiring of Chud as head coach. But the hiring of Turner is great news for Weeden. Norv likes the big, strong armed quarterbacks and I think this hire helps Weeden out a great deal.

Steeler fan, so it pains me to say it, but good hire Browns.

  23. Congratulations to Norv Turner for being hiered as Cleveland Head Coach. Maybe they have turn the corner.

  24. Just buttin in. Listen, building a good playoff caliber team needs explosiveness of the sudden kind. And that’s what Norv can do for Cleveland. And add in his passion for the run as well, be patient Cleveland, the DAWG POUND shall BITE AGAIN!

  25. I absolutely dont know how Norv got his ‘genius’ reputation. As a Charger fan it was always…..1st down-RB off tackle, 2nd down-swing pass to RB or over middle to Gates, 3rd down – Rivers gets sacked, 4th down—-(Norv’s best call)-punt.

  26. The new head coach WILL be looking over his shoulder. Both coordinaters have plenty of head coach experiance.

  27. Now the Browns have two guys that have failed every ware they went. Just to let Browns fans know Chud was going to be wacked after the coaching searches were done.

  28. Good for Norv. As a Bolt fan, I liked him when he was an OC there than he was a HC. Let’s see if he can turn Weeden around to become better and run better schemes there than he ran in SD his last 2 years here.

  29. I don’t get the fascination with turner he hasn’t done anything since he had aikman but as a bengal fan keep doing what you doing Cleveland.

  30. They’re heading in the right direction with Norv as OC. Maybe, now, McCoy can get his starting job back.

  31. Norv’s system needs a strong RB to function properly. When Norv has a good RB in his offense, he is really good. That’s why the whole thing fell apart in SD, Ryan Matthews blows. Norv should do well with Richardson. Chud did good things in SD too. Brownies might be a sleeper next year. Their defense was solid already.

  32. I was pretty certain Norv would land the OC job in Baltimore.

This Chargers fan (who was happy to see you go) is also happy to see you get back on the horse and land another OC job.

Good luck to Norv and the Browns.

  33. Norv is good man and thats why people like him will always find a job. glad to see him as an OC rateher than a HC. this is what he was born to do.
he’ll make the browns a better team and the young qb a better player. cant say the same about that AJ (the J stands for jerk) Smith dude. dont see anyone hiring that bastard.

  34. This is gigantic! I wanted the Vikings to fire Muagrave and hire Turner! One of the top offensive minds in the biz! The browns instantly have become relevant! Look out!
