Titans fire coach who designed “Music City Miracle”

Shuffling position coaches is a rite of January, with many of the guys coming and going never registering with the general public.

But the guy the Titans fired Friday, special teams coach Alan Lowry, drew up one of the most famous plays in NFL playoff history.

Lowry spent 17 years with the Titans, but will be best remembered for the “Music City Miracle,” the game-winning kickoff return in a 1999 wild-card game against Buffalo. The last 75 yards of the play were gained by wide receiver Kevin Dyson after Lorenzo Neal tossed it to Frank Wychek, who caught the Bills off guard by flinging it across the field.

Jim Wyatt of the Tennesseean confirmed the news with Lowry, who said head coach Mike Munchak told him he wanted to go in a different direction.

“It’s been a great run for me. I’ve enjoyed my time with the Titans,’’ Lowry said. “To me, it wasn’t about production on the field.”

Lowry’s the fourth Titans assistant offered up this offseason, along with running backs coach Jim Skipper, tight ends coach John Zernhelt, and linebackers coach Frank Bush.
