Texans hands are tied with Schaub in 2013

Though Texans quarterback Matt Schaub had a solid game on Sunday against the Patriots, plenty of his yards and both of his touchdown passes came after Houston had fallen into a 25-point hole.  Regardless, a season of high expectations ended with the Texans doing no better than they did in 2011.

Things could have been different, if the Texans had nailed down the No. 1 seed in the AFC.  But with the Texans blowing back-to-back opportunities to secure home-field advantage during the final two weeks of the regular season, they had to play in the wild-card round and hit the road, Jack, for the divisional playoffs.

Coupled with a chronic inability by Schaub to show up in big games this season, plenty of Texans fans surely will wonder whether it’s time, at a minimum, to open up the competition.

That’s unlikely.  Schaub’s contract has what we’ll call a Sanchez clause in 2013, with the quarterback due to receive a fully-guaranteed base salary of $7.25 million.  While we don’t know whether the Texans would be entitled to an offset if Schaub is cut and plays elsewhere next season, the Sanchez deal (which blocks an offset) and the Schaub deal were negotiated by the same agency, Athletes First.

Then there’s the fact that moving on from Schaub would result in $14 million in dead money, thanks to the unallocated portion of his $17.5 million signing bonus.  Though the hit could be reduced to $3.5 million in 2013 with a post-June 1 designation for the release, the other $10.5 million would apply to the cap in 2014.

Moreover, dumping Schaub would constitute an admission that the $22.4 million Schaub was paid in 2013 was a mistake.

So, yes, Schaub will be back in 2013.  The question is whether, come 2014, the Texans will be willing to pay him a non-guaranteed base salary of $10 million, especially since the dead money could be reduced to $3.5 million in 2014 and $7 million in 2015.

Before making any moves with Schaub, the Texans would have to feel like they have someone better.  But it’s hard to imagine them doing much more as a team until they do.

  1. The Texans offense got nearly 500 yards against the Pats. They didn’t lose this game because of Matt Schaub. Schaub is a good qb just not great. He’s not the problem.

The Texans defense couldn’t stop the Pats offense. You give up 41 points. You lose.

  2. They aren’t exactly loaded at receiver. I’d try upgrading there before throwing Schaub away. There is nobody better to go out and get. Unless you think Yates is the answer.

  3. Texans are still an outstanding team with a lot of outstanding players. They’ll be a contender next year. Shaub’s a good QB. Doesn’t have a lot of playoff experience. I’m sure every team wants an elite QB, but they don’t grow on trees. A tweak here and there, a good offseason and draft, some better luck with injuries and they’ll be fine. Just ran into a buzzsaw tonite.

  4. This draft doesn’t have anyone better but next one might. Guy is nothing but a glorified manager. Shameful how many weapons they have that are held back by average QB play. They might want to see if Dilfer still has some arm lol!!!

  5. The Texans aren’t going to find anybody better than Schaub anytime soon. Move on folks, there’s nothing here to see.

  6. Texan drops cost them points early in this game. Not Schaub’s fault. There are alot worse QB’s than Schaub.

  7. Shaub will never be a big time QB. And the Texans, as they stand now, need it. D is not a top defense, and holes on offense are killers.

Along with coaching. A team that doesn’t hustle is a poorly coached team

  8. One of the smart things Andy Reid always does is draft a QB. He must get a rookie every 2 years. Now most of the time, they either walk as FA or are traded for another pick. But the idea of always having young competition & hoping to find a Russell, Brady, CK (SF), is the real intent.

  9. You COULD dump Schaub… but where you going to go for a quarterback? Not like there are a lot of better options for you.

    ———————————

Yardage isn’t relevant because they gained a ton when the Pats played softer defense. I’m not a Pats fan but their D is far from bad, people point at the yardage totals but they generate tons of turnovers and stop the run, winning formula for the most part.

  11. there are 25 other teams that would happily take schaub… he’s not the problem… the problem was that his opposition flicked a 50 yard TD pass while the coach nonchalantly looked over his shoulder.

  12. Why is Schaub suddenly considered a problem when the defense is guilty of giving up 41 points? And if they did cut him, who do you suggest they replace him with? Schaub is a strength of that team; at the very least, he’s no weakness. Cutting him to save some money might make financial sense but it doesn’t make football sense if you don’t have someone better waiting in the wings.

  13. Coaching screwed them with the choice of 4th down with 10+ minutes left on their side of the field. Throwing when you need 1 yard on 4th down and you have Foster? Was Childress coaching the Texans?

  14. Something felt off about the Texans. You think they’d have a little more sense of urgency on that 2nd to last drive. You’re down 3 scores. with little less than 10 minutes.

Hurry the hell up to the line and get the plays in. At times they’d walk up to the line, Schaub would be looking to the sideline waiting for the play. They wasted nearly 5 on the drive.

  15. Most of the 500 yards came when the Pats were up by 25 and playing a prevent defense. Do the stats count? Sure. But if the game were closer throughout, the Pats D would have been playing them tighter and the Texans wouldn’t have gained close to 500 yards.

  16. They also might have scored more points if the Texans had, you know, showed the slightest sense of urgency as they were trying to come back.

They took their time getting to the line almost every time in the late 3rd and 4th quarters and the 2 or 3 minutes they could have added back on the clock might have made a difference in their opportunity to come back.

I don’t think Kubiak is that great a coach and it showed in the way the team wasted crucial time late in the game.

Schaub also doesn’t seem to have a lot of passion for what his work, though a lot of QBs with much more passion are much poorer players than he is.

  17. Anyone who watched the game knows Schaub is the problem. He was ineffective early in the game and gave the ball back to Brady too many times, not to mention settling for 3. Can’t expect anyone to shut down Brady if you can’t sustain long drives or score quickly. The issue is that this team is built to play from ahead but has a QB who can’t come from behind. He’s the least athletic QB in the league and is worthless when he’s shuffled out of the pocket

  18. No, Schaub did not have a solid game. Whenever you see his stats inflated like this, it’s because we fell behind early and he had to throw the ball a bunch of time.
    1. We can’t afford another year of Schaub “throwing” the ball away, just because he came under pressure or the defense changed plays on him.
    2. We can’t afford a QB who is afraid of running for even 1 yard. Even the notoriously clay-footed Brady and Manning run for first downs every no and then.
    3. We cannot afford the inability of Schaub to read defenses. After 6 years in the same system, you’d expect Schaub to know the plays like the back of his hand.
    4. We cannot afford another year of SChaub’s turnovers, especially during crucial stretches.
    5. We cannot afford the numerous 3 and outs. Although I don’t have the stats now, I am pretty sure, the Texans are in the top 5 in 3 and outs. This is on Schaub too because (1) of his errant throws, (2) inability to read defenses and change plays (3) numerous check downs.
    6. We cannot afford another year of Schaub-led offense settling for FGs instead of TD (see reasons above).
    7. We cannot afford another year of Schaub’s numerous INTs.

  19. Rick Smith and Bob McNair made the huge mistake in giving Schaub the extension with him even playing a game in the playoffs then they compound the problem by overpaying Schaub in guaranteed money. Unbelievable.
Here is the main problem, T.J.Yates went 1-1 as a rookie in last season’s playoffs while Matt Schaub goes 1-1 in this season’s playoff when he was suppose to be the difference in the Texans making the Super Bowl this season. The Texans might not do better than Schaub but Yates is a lateral move at a lower salary.
Given the limited salary cap space, this was a bad move. You might have to hold on to Schaub for 1 more year but Kubiak’s playcalling is a problem that can be fixed.
Also, coaches do not have a salary cap so Bob McNair should strip Gary Kubiak of the playcalling duties. Hire Norv Turner as the OC and let him call plays on gameday. Kubiak’s playcalling is too vanilla when you need a neopalitan playcalling to get to the Super Bowl.
Kubiak is far from an elite head coach and his time in Houston should be numbered.

  20. I am NOT saying that Schaub is the ONLY problem, but he is a huge liability and that’s why oppositions stacked the box against Foster. If you are a QB and you’d rather heave the ball out of play rather than run for a 1 or 2 yard first down, that’s a big problem. INTs at crucial moments? That’s a huge problem. Not able to make pre-snap reads and not able to change plays? Huge problem. 25 teams may gladly accept Schaub, but if you are aspiring to go to the Superbowl and win, then Schaub is simply not good enough.

  21. Perhaps they should look in their back yard. What unsigned Rookie of the Year/Pro Bowl QB’s hometown is Houston? Here’s a hint:

    “Dream Team.”

  22. Schaub has enough of a track record by now. You know what you get.

He may not be the entire problem, but he is most definitely not part of the solution.

This team is stuck in the mud.

  23. Schaub isn’t an elite QB but pretty hard to win when your D allows 41 points.

Besides, where exactly will they get an elite QB between now and the start of camp? Oh, yeah, right. There aren’t any! Schaub will be the starter next year. He’s good enough to get them into the playoffs and once there anything can happen.

  24. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: bald quarterbacks don’t win big games. Houston’s most important offseason acquisition should be Rogaine.

  25. The defense got tired in the second half. 3 and out, INT, 3 and out…any defense will be tired if they have to be on the field that long. The Seattle defense is a great example. When Wilson and the offense were struggling and they were on the field for the better part of the first half, they couldn’t stop the Falcon. When Wilson and the offense got their act together, the defense played a lot better and limited the Falcons to just 10 points. It’s football 101. 360 pound men running for 20 minutes? They get gassed after playing 2 series, talk less of playing multiple series in one half.

I haven’t done the math so I don’t know if this is true, but it made me laugh.

    Trent Dilfer?

  27. Schaub isn’t THE problem but he’s definitely a problem. The play calling is THE problem. Schaub isn’t bad at running the spread. He ran it a lot when Kyle Shanahan was OC. He also did it well this season in the 4th quarter of the Jacksonville game, Lions and again today. There’s a problem when you wait so long to make the calls that will actually put you back in the game. I hope they lose Rick Dennison and get an aggressive OC to take the play calling away from Kuboak.

  28. I really don’t understand all the sudden anti-Schaub sentiments I keep hearing everywhere. He’s a solid QB. Not elite but but very good. If Texan fans are that miserable trade him to the Jets for Sanchez. That should cure it.

  29. Hey, the Texans are in a LOT better shape than many other teams…..like the Titans.

Texans are a better organization and have a solid owner. And they don’t have fake “playmakers” like CJ, Britt, or Griffin.

Actually it was 425 yards, 334 passing and 91 rushing. last time I checked points won games not yards.

  31. Schaub isn’t the problem, he’s better than average. The problem lies with Kubiak, he’s been there 7 years now and McNair has given him the players and money and he just isn’t getting the job done.

  33. after watching the Texans in the game…there was no sense of urgency to win and things seem so slow to develop with the texans offense; they need more playmakers on offense to create better mismatches against defenses..Schaub had a good game, but he needs more playmakers to help him compete.

  34. We’ll take him in Minnesota.

I have to believe that a lot of teams will now start taking a shot at trying to find a Russell Wilson/Colin K type QB with a 2nd, 3rd or 4th round pick going forward.

  35. Schaub is OK, not good, not bad. There’s something wrong with the team, though, they looked resigned to losing that game instead of having the fire to get back into it. Seemed like they were just waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Watt’s silly salute after a sack has gotten old already. Seems a little too contrived IMO.

  36. Terry Bradshaw is 4-0 in Super Bowl Games.

Bald quarterbacks, not bald former quarterbacks. Dude had a flow in the 70’s.

  37. ravens won a superbowl with Dilfer, Schaub is better than he was. Build the rest of the team

  38. Kinda like Bears with Cutler, Cowboys with Romo etc. Won’t be easily replace, but will unlikely ever win a SB with them.

  39. They need some wide receivers for the guy. They have Andre Johnson, Owen Daniels…and who else? Kevin Walter? Garrett Graham? Keyshawn Martin, Devier Posey? Not much for him to work with when people shut down their run game/play action passing game.

  40. Just proves that you need a Franchise QB to go anywhere in the playoffs…and clearly Schaub is NOT a franchise QB. They need to bring in some competetion to elevate his game

  41. If Schaub has to go, then wouldn’t Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco also have been let go at some point? Flacco never gets it done in the playoffs and neither does Ryan (maybe this will be the year for one of them?)

  42. Average isn’t good enough to win a Super Bowl. It doesn’t help that Schaub wilted under the pressure.

The Texans don’t have to cut him. They just need to draft someone to develop for after next year. Schuab still might win a Super Bowl–Trent Dilfer did after all. But they need to get someone to develop for the future.

  43. When they had to settle for a 3 on the opening 94 yard kick off return I knew Houston was done
It wasn’t Schaubs fault that his receiver let the sure TD pass go thru his hands

The NFL and its powers will make sure the Patriots always make it to the playoffs
It’s too bad that Houston couldn’t wrap it up and get home field

  44. Houston should draft a player like Ryan Nassib in the 2nd/3rd round and let him compete. It’s pretty evident that Schaub doesn’t elevate the play of his team despite having adequate weapons at his disposal. Bringing in a rook could force him to step it up or the youngster could simply beat him out and upgrade the team.

  45. Wait, wasn’t it a year ago or something like that, Schaub was being called an elite Brady/Rogers level QB around here? He has a few shaky games this season and suddenly he’s getting Mark Sanchez comparisons? Bizarre.

Trent Dilfer, the poster boy for cautious, mistake limiting offenses, otherwise known as game managers. Not sure why everyone wants to pigeonhole their teams QBs as Elite or Game Managers, but it’s getting out of hand.

Also, don’t look for more “Game Managers” to win Super Bowls, that Ravens team had dominant defensive and special teams units you’ll most likely never see again.

  47. Schaub isn’t the problem, their defense got exposed vs Green Bay and was never the same as it looked early this year. Not sure if Cushing makes that much difference or if they just weren’t that good to begin with (or there were other injuries that I’m forgetting).

  48. Schaub is a good QB, not a great one. With the top QBs making $15 – $20M a season, paying Schaub $17.25M for two years doesn’t sound so bad.

  49. jwreck;

Tittle won lots of big games for the Giants between 1961-1963, he just never won the biggest (two losses to the golden era Pack, one to da Bears when they injured his knee early [Def Coord George Allen got the game ball]).

  50. Same thing every year….trust me I know as a Bengal fan…..is he the QB of the future or.. isn’t he….. Schaub is more than just an average QB. I swear two years ago he threw for over 400 yards almost every game. Even last year before he got hurt he did just fine. With that said let ME just say…..everyone is just to quick to judge….period

  51. While the rest of the team has to improve so does Schaub. The game has changed. You need a QB that can make plays. While Schaub is an above average QB, that isnt good enough anymore. The last time a team won despite their QB was the Steelers in 2005. Even Eli made plays when it mattered in 07. I cant see Schaub making a miracle happen like that.

There were some drops tonight but there were a lot of bad decisions on his part. I am sure someone has also already mentioned but all of his stats came when they were behind. Patriots went into prevent defense mode, and Schaub got a lot of easy underneaths throws.

Plus there are now QBs in the league who run. Another thing Schaub cant do.

To win a ring these days you need a special QB.

  53. Here’s the deal for me. College coaches have installed the pro game into the college game and came up with a pro style QB who can run.
Those guys who can pull it off are the future of the NFL. I remember when teams would not let their QB run and if they did run they were in trouble when they got to the bench. The worry was injury of course.

Now the irony is you have some drop back QB’s like Rogers, Mannings and Brady who are good but the running guys are catching up quickly.

  54. Who exactly is better available to them? That’s the obvious question for people trying to run Schaub out of town, who has never been close to a great QB, but he’s hardly terrible.

Starting QB’s, let alone ones who can win don’t exactly grow on trees or fall too far past the first 10 picks in most drafts.

Also, Manning lost the same weekend, so you can’t even point to him exactly being an obvious upgrade. And that would have cost Bob McNair a lot more money for the privilege on top of all that.

I’m so sick of fans acting like they “deserve” to win the Super Bowl. Go back to work and get better. This is your team. Unless Schaub or some other key player gets hurt to send you to the top of the draft, this is the horses youre going to win or lose with until the current nucleus is gone. If Schaub wasn’t the guy, somebody should have realized that when you were going 8-8 with him every year. Stop whining about it.

  55. ravens won a superbowl with Dilfer, Schaub is better than he was. Build the rest of the team

The League has changed. Relying on a game-mgr. type QB isn’t likely to get anyone the Lombardi now.

The Texans have proved you can’t rely on an Offense that isn’t built to overcome a substantial point deficit.

And that’s why Jim Harbaugh switched to Kaepernick- he knew they were going to need explosive offense to mount a come-back at some point, even with their great Defense.

  56. Cut him then by God if your not happy with a top QB getting you deep into the playoffs.,Let the Jaguars get him and yall can have Gabbert and Henne, Hell one Schaub is better than these two jag-offs we got here combined.Jags need to hire Lovie Smith as your New Head Coach, Trade MJD for some picks while you can Rebuild the OL through Free Agency,
Choose FSU-DE-Werner with the second overall pick.
And you will take back the AFC South!

  57. I’ve been harsh on Schaub but the Oline seemed a little off this year. Foster had an average year and they really need better WRs than Johnson and the leftovers. Time to focus back on the offense since all those early defensive guys still couldn’t stop brady.

  58. anyone actually watch this game? Schaumburg is the weak link in Houston. Andre Johnson has covered for him long enough. The texans aren’t going to win with him. They gave up too much to get him and paid too much money…..time to move on. Texans fans are doing the David Carr denial all over again

Exactly… Stop comparing him to the whole league and compare him to the QBs that have a shot at winning a super bowl.

Of the teams in the divisional round. You would rank Schaub last. You can also a few QBs that didnt make it to that round. Thats all that matters. It doesnt if he is better than Mark Sanchez, Chad Henne, etc. Texans arent playing to get into the playoffs. They want to win the Super Bowl.

You probably cant trade for a QB but you can draft one. Of the 8 QBs in the Divisional Round, only 2 were top 10 1st round picks. Move up in the draft if you have to.

  61. Are you really trying to compare Schaub to Sanchez!?!?

If that is what you are attempting to do, then I have lost a lot of respect for this blog. First and foremost, Sanchez can’t even sit down at same table with Schaub.

The Texans plain and simple lost to a better team, and a team that is clicking on all cylinders. End of conversation!

  62. Jeez, they had a pretty good season. Schaub had a pretty good one, too. When was the last time a team finished 12-4 and the first thing discussed after the season ended was whether or not they’ll dump their quarterback?

  63. Matt Schaub always reminded me of Matt Hasselbeck. Both former back ups traded to a struggling franchise, both solid QBs who went to a few pro bowls and had solid but largely unnoticed play and were very underrated, both surrounded by solid talent (Shaun Alexander, Andre Johnson, Foster, Walter Jones etc etc), they both even wear #8.

Personally I think Schaub has run his course. He is getting up there in age (32 by next season) and has a Peyton Manning like tendency to choke in big games. Houston would be smart to draft a QB in rounds 2-4 to compete with Yates and be a possible QB of the future.

  64. You guys in the sports media…always trying to stir the pot…

…it was a 4 pt lead for the Pats at halftime, then the Texans defense failed to come out of the locker room for the 3rd qtr.

Schaub threw for one yard less than Brady…and now the sports media tries to put the loss on the Texan’s QB..

…un freaking real, you talking heads

  65. I just looked up YA Tittle in Wiki- he’s 86, still alive and unsigned. Maybe the Texans want to kick the tires?

  66. I wonder if all those years Marino failed to get the Dophins to the Super Bowl how many fans were clammering for his to be cut? The unfortunate truth is some teams just don’t get to the big game, especially during times that there are dynasty teams (like the Patriots) steamrolling along at near unstoppable levels.

  67. Texas should look at bringing in Dwyane Bowe. That would give them a lethal 1-2 punch at WR. They are set at RB. TE is pretty strong and a solid defense is already there.

  68. As a former UMD Terps season ticket holder I saw Schaub play alot in at UVA…that said, I’m stunned he’s made it as a pro. He’s good enough & QB’s are difficult to come by, it would be a big mistake to get rid of him

  69. Funny how Wade Phillips gets a Pass, I called it back when he was our DC in Dallas. His defense gives up a ton of yards and with good teams those yards equate to points!

  70. The lost to the vikings 23-6 schaub couldnt move the ball. The lost to the colts 28-16 Schaub couldnt move the ball. Any Houston fan knows if the game is not perfect for him he cant perform. Yea the D gave up 41 but what abou the other games. For the last month in a half we have been out caoched and out played at the QB position.

  71. Texas should look at bringing in Dwyane Bowe. That would give them a lethal 1-2 punch at WR. They are set at RB. TE is pretty strong and a solid defense is already there.

    AGREE!

  72. Schaub is average at best. The difference between him and a Fitzpatrick is Foster, Johnson, and a pretty good defense.

  73. i live in Houston…the fans are going HAM (harder than a mowfo) on Schaub and Kubiak this morning…..Kubiak needs to lose the Shanahan/Denver playbook of the 1990’s…the offense is point blank the major problem on this team….our defense and running game are good enough, but the Texans never threw the ball downfield more than 20 yds yesterday…

that was a fundamental coaching philosophy that needs to be changed in the offense…..the texans need to get younger, faster and more hungry this offseason…..they lost the home field down the stretch and the game vs NE yesterday because they didnt upgrade at WR, let the entire right side of their O-line leave, and did not have quality backups who could spell starters…

NE lost Gronk….Hernandez takes over….they lost Woodhead…Shane Vereen and Stephen Ridley killed the Texans…..Texans didnt even play their 2nd rb yesterday, Ben Tate, who ran for over 1500 yds the last two seasons….

Texans also let go of Jacoby Jones, and he ended up making first team all pro kick returner and scored game tying 70 yd td vs Denver….they let go off Jones replacement, Trindon Holliday, who returned a punt and a kickoff for a td vs Baltimore this weekend…..

Kubiak needs to grow some grapefruits this offseason…

  74. i am a female that really doesn’t know all the logistics of football but i believe that maybe it’s time for a new head coach that wants more aggression on the field. if you want to win you will coach and paly like a winner. and maybe it is time to think about another qb. most qb’s from what i can see are leaders i don’t see any leading taking place on the texan team. arian foster and andre johnson can’t do it all.

    ————————————————
Yes Schaub at the start of the season was being called an elite. He is no Tom Brady but he is a descent QB and like most have said, the Texan’s aren’t going to find anyone better anytime soon. I look at the Defense giving up 41 points. The defense looked confused. Schaub’s lack of urgency also hurt the Texans, but I also look at the coaching as well. Kubiak is not aggressive enough and he shouldn’t be calling the plays. The Texans also need another WR and I would say another RB coach as well. This team was picked from early in the season as “The Team” but in the end couldn’t produce and fell short. I would look at my coaching staff before I look at another QB. I think the Texan’s need to focus on their secondary as well. The need a better bench than what they have. Too many key players get hurt each year and it hurts the Texans.

The Texans will be a force next year as well but neeeds to do some restructuring and look at beefing up some of the wholes through the draft and free agents.
