Three days after a historically pathetic performance by the Packers’ defense, Packers coach Mike McCarthy says that the man who runs the defense will be back in 2013, possibly to have another historically pathetic performance in the postseason.
McCarthy told reporters on Tuesday that Capers will be back. Sort of.
Via Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com, McCarthy said that he is “very confident” Capers will return in 2013, but that McCarthy plans to evaluate everyone.
Still, McCarthy bristled at the suggestion that Capers should be blamed. Via Seifert, McCarthy called it “ridiculous” that he has to answer questions and that he’s “appalled” by the topic.
That’s fine, but plenty of Packers fans believe that the defensive performance on Saturday night was “ridiculous,” and that they too are “appalled.”
Bottom line? At some point most coaches have to decide whether to fire a key assistant or risk inching toward the hot seat himself.
