New Bears coach Marc Trestman made it clear in his first press conference that quarterback Jay Cutler’s going to be a pet project.
Trestman said he’d handle offensive play-calling, and that getting off to a good relationship with Cutler was going to be essential.
“I can’t wait to get my hands on him,” Trestman said. “That starts today.”
The new Bears coach stressed that “the quarterback has to play at an efficient level,” but also pointed out problems the Bears had last year that had not as much to do with Cutler.
“This guy loves football,” Trestman said of Cutler. “He wants to be great. And hopefully we can give him some direction and protection.”
Trestman also said defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli has chosen to leave. There were some reports yesterday that Marinelli had a chance to stay, but he’s apparently looking elsewhere.
