Patriots sign Armond Armstead out of USC, CFL

He might not necessarily be Cameron Wake, but the Patriots are taking a chance on a Canadian defensive lineman who could turn out to be worth the gamble.

According to, the Patriots signed former Southern Cal defensive lineman Armond Armstead, who played for the Toronto Argonauts this season.

He led the Argos with six sacks and earned All-Star recognition, after being undrafted by the NFL.

Armstead played three years for the Trojans, but wasn’t medically cleared to play in 2011 after a heart attack, which his attorney claimed was a result of team doctors treating him with the controversial pain-killer Toradol.

The 6-foot-5, 300-pound Armstead also visited with the Eagles and Colts in January.
