Bengals sign Aaron Maybin

Aaron Maybin was a major bust as a first-round draft pick, but he’s not done in the NFL just yet.

The Bengals have announced that they signed Maybin, a 2009 first-round draft pick of the Bills who most recently played for the Jets.

Buffalo spent the 11th overall pick in the draft on Maybin and thought he could develop into an elite NFL pass rusher, but to say that turned out to be a major disappointment would be a major understatement. Maybin played 27 games in two seasons with the Bills and recorded zero sacks.

Maybin did, however, show some promise as a pass rusher with the Jets in 2011, when he recorded six sacks as a situational pass rusher. But Maybin didn’t do much in 2012 before being released during the season.

For the Bengals, there’s no harm in giving Maybin a shot to show what he can do during the offseason. Whether he makes the 53-man roster in eight months is another question.

  1. I think they Bengals deserve the benefit of the doubt when it comes to talent evaluation. Say what you will about Mike Brown being cheap but they know how to get the most out of players.

I also think it’s kind of funny how all the haters of Vontaze Burfict seemed to disappear when the Bengals made him their starting linebacker, they’ve received no credit for taking a chance on him. I know another team in their division could use a tough young LBer for the next few years.

He’s going by Aaron Hasbin these days.
No actually hes still gong by this on twitter:

#51 Outside Linebacker of the New York Jets.

  3. I never thought I’d have to hear his name for a couple of years. You know, every now and then, maybe on the show when they talk about the top ten draft busts, but otherwise not.

Must have kept a criminal record under wraps til now…
It always makes me laugh hearing these Browns fans potshot the Bengals.

Bengals have made the playoffs 3 of their last 4 years. Remind me again what the Browns have done during that time span?

  5. But…..but……..I thought the Jets made fools of the Bills, finding pure gold discarded by Buffalo? Wasn’t he the next big thing? A team in need of cheap talent like the Jets dump him? Say it ain’t so.

The Bengals do a great job with talented players who have all but lost their way out of the NFL.

Don’t you need talent to begin with? Dude is HORRIBLE.

  7. Ah yes. The place to sign right before you career ends officially. My guess is he won’t even make it to TC before he’s let go.

  8. Eric Wood said it best to this bum….why don’t you give back some of that damn money you haven’t earned.

They were on the same team at that point.

This dude is a waste of the D line/LB coaches Time.

He will However have the coolest haircut on the team come training camp!!! Cant wait to see what cool Bengal he has shaved into the side of his empty head.

  9. I hope he sticks around a while, so we can keep remembering how he was drafted above Brian Orakpo, Brian Cushing, and Clay Matthews. Never gets old. And nothing against the Bills–cellar-dweller solidarity–but C’mon guys.

  10. Very good pickup for the bengals. He got a raw deal in NY and never played after leading the team in sacks the year before. He is still very young and can still become a decent player in the NFL. Still don’t know why the hell the jets didnt use him more.

  11. Brownsfan cracking wise on the Bengals.

Brownsfan should remain silent until they do something on the field, in say… 10-15 years.

  12. Reggie Nelson had the same label applied to him before coming to Cincy. Zimmer typically gets the most out of these guys (excluding the Taylor Mays project, which isn’t over quite yet)…Maybin also hasn’t been in a 4-3 defense to this point so maybe a change of scheme/coaching will finally turn the light on for this kid. Hell, he’s only 24 and obviously had all the measurables require to be the 11th overall pick. Me personally, I trust in Zimmer to coach this kid up- worst case scenario he’s either depth, or so bad we cut him…Classic Bengals low risk, high reward potential

  13. First I hope this guy loses weight. It was dumb for him to gain weight to “stay on the field “longer.

That 5000 cal per day diet was disgusting to hear about and not good for his career and I think that it would benefit him for Him to be leaner and faster like how he was when weighing under 235.

Hopefully Mike Zimmer sees good things in him and that way he can get the head-coaching job that he truly deserves.

  14. As a Seahawks fan, I think they could have signed Maybin as a free agent and got the same production that they got out of Bruce Irvin at the 15th pick. A lot of solid talent went later in that round.

  15. Wrongo – the Bills drafted him into a 43 defense. It was so bad thats one of the reasons they changed to a 34.

    …Maybin also hasn’t been in a 4-3 defense

  16. Another Zimmer Creation. He loves the rejects and has been and he turns them into solid players(see Lawson,Reggie Nelson,Terrance Newman and Adam Jones). One more thing to vincentbojackson: Maualuga was drafted in the second round, not the first round.

Bengals replacing first-round bust Maualuga with first-round bust Maybin.”

My guess it is to have an option if Michael Johnson leaves as Maybin will likely be used as a hybrid OLB/DE just like Johnson/Dunlap.

  18. Maybin was terrible. My guess is he’s one of the first cuts by the Bengals. He wasn’t good enough to play special teams on the Bills.

  19. I think a good comparison is Wallace Gilberry. Nobody heard of him outside of KC and Alabama fans, but he got 6.5 sacks in less than a full season. With all of the holes at LB, he has a shot.

  20. He sucks but he’s exactly what Mike Brown likes, he’ll play for cheap.

A starter will get released and replaced by Maybin, all for the almighty buck.
