Griffin thinks Gregg Williams would help Titans defense

Titans safety Michael Griffin doesn’t really know Gregg Williams, but he figures bringing him into the coaching staff can’t hurt.

The Titans, who ranked 27th in the league in defense, are considering bringing Williams on board, assuming he gets reinstated.

Griffin said the fact incumbent coordinator Jerry Gray worked for Williams in the past would make it a smooth transition.

“If he comes, I know coach Gray has coached underneath him, so I don’t think it would be anything where two coaches bump heads trying to figure things out,” Griffin said, via John Glennon of the Tennesseean. “Just watching the Saints play when they won the Super Bowl, and watching the way they played [under Williams], . . . and he’s been a coach here before. So he’d be able to bring all that together. I think it would help us in the long run.”

Williams was with the Titans even before they were the Titans, and back when their defenses were actually good.

Griffin said after talking to former teammate Cortland Finnegan (who went to St. Louis, where Williams was supposed to work last year before the suspension), he’s convinced it can work.

He also denies that there would be an issue of trust, after Williams testified against linebacker Jonathan Vilma.

“I don’t think so. All that’s in the past,” Griffin said. “You’ve just got to move forward. He’s been suspended. Most people learn their lessons when they get suspended. The league took action, so you just go forward from there.

“He paid his dues. He missed a whole entire season. You’ve just got to go from there. . . .

“As a Tennessee Titans organization, I think we have bigger problems than to worry about what happened with the Saints.”

Whether Williams is enough to fix them, or whether the league lets him, remains to be seen.
