John Idzik’s “comfortable” with Mark Sanchez on the roster

Jets General Manager John Idzik got a quick introduction to life in his new job when his introductory press conference came on the heels of reports that the team was looking at trade options involving cornerback Darrelle Revis.

Idzik did his best to temper the flames on that front by speaking with Revis, although we’re fairly sure we haven’t heard the last of that discussion. While there may be other detours as well, Idzik’s performance is going to be judged in large part by his ability to deal with the quarterback position. During an interview with Craig Carton and Boomer Esiason on WFAN in New York, Idzik said it was too soon to make any decisions about what role any players will play but that he is comfortable with Mark Sanchez being on the roster.

“Yeah, I’m comfortable with Mark being a Jet. I told him as well, we’re going to add competition. … It’s going to help make Mark and everybody else better,” Idzik said. “I think he’s chomping at the bit. And he wants to get going with his new coordinator (Marty Mornhinweg). He’s all about competing. I got a really good feeling from Mark.”

With a massive cap hit looming if the Jets were to part ways with Sanchez, Idzik’s got good reason to make himself comfortable with the idea of having the quarterback on the roster in 2013. The fact that he’s also promising competition tells you, with good reason, that there’s a limit to his comfort.
