Ray Lewis: No one at Media Day is qualified to ask about murder case

Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis had to know heading into Super Bowl Media Day that he would be asked about pleading guilty to obstruction of justice in connection with a 2000 incident in which two men were stabbed to death and Lewis was initially charged with murder. But Lewis says that question is not appropriate for Super Bowl Media Day.

Asked about the case today, Lewis said he wouldn’t get into the details and he doesn’t think the assembled members of the media should be asking about it.

“Nobody here is really qualified to ask those questions,” Lewis said. “I just truly feel that this is God’s time, and whatever his time is, you know, let it be his will. Don’t try to please everybody with your words, try to make everybody’s story sound right. At this time, I would rather direct my questions in other places. Because I live with that every day. You maybe can take a break from it. I don’t. I live with it every day of my life and I would rather not talk about it today.”

That’s about what everyone expected Lewis to say: Lewis has typically refused to get into specifics about the case while invoking his religion to demonstrate that he’s a changed man. And that’s what Lewis is continuing to do during the last week of his NFL career.

  1. Is it too much to ask to ask a football player about a football game?

I’d be mad to if after 12 years of reporters treating you nice and (for the most part) moving past this murder, that they all of a sudden turn on him and start attacking him about a case that he was exonerated from 12 years ago.

    A bunch of vultures I tells ya…vultures!

  2. I’m really tired of people using God as an excuse for something. It’s a weak, tired way of saying “I don’t have a real answer for that”.

  3. And another thing… the best thing the media could do is outright ignore this fool all week. Now THAT would make for a story worth reading about.

  4. Id have to agree with Ray. What relevance does this question have about the super bowl or anything related to the game? It was 12 years ago and someone feels the need to bring it up now? Just another talking head trying to make a name for himself. The media makes me sick.

  5. Its been 12 years and there was no real evidence then and there’s none now. Stop talking about it. If I kept getting asked questions over something that happened 12 years ago that’s not relevant or accurate I would refuse to talk about it too.

  6. Why are we interviewing these guys at all? What secret tidbit are they going to reveal before the game? “Oh, and um…., I forgot tell everyone that we are totally changing our defensive schemes and here are our three trick plays that we will unleash on the opposing team.”

  7. so he cant believe in god? you people are crazy!! none of you were there how do you know judge not yet be judged first!! in the bible read it sometimes!

  8. Sometimes I can not stand Ray Lewis. Pulling out that God card at the most appropriate times. It may be an old issue, but I don’d think that means that it is a non-issue. Lewis may not want to deal with it anymore, but the fact remains there are a lot of unanswered questions about that night, that have a lot to do with him.

  9. Ray living a WWE storyline. Got all the media fooled. Got Disney to give hime a job at ESPN. SMH

  10. That’s tired for people to keep bringing that up it was 12 years ago and he was found not guilty. The man is older and wiser and does a lot of good things now so why keep bringing up a negative. It is possible for the man to turn his life around and give his life to God. It’s like people are jealous so they have to go back 12 years ago to find a negative.

  11. He took this from Billick from the 2000 SB. Billick said that none of the reporters where qualified to ask questions about it and as much as the reporters want their not gonna retry the case through the media

  12. Give it a rest already….it happened over 10 years ago and he was acquitted. He’s still a great player and that is how I’ll remember him. He’s not a friend of mine or ever will be…but I’m a football fan of his. That is what we’re getting away from…we’re football fans and we should be looking at his athletic ability not his personal life. Just like it’s a shame how Pete Rose is perceived. He also was a great player but no one ever talks about that just that he bet on baseball (not his own team).

  13. Ray:

    Deny. Deny. Deny. Deny.
    Everyone will eventually believe it.

    Signed,
    Lance Armstrong.

  14. The media can be so stupid! The media don’t care about anyone, all they want is to create a story that will get them hits or whatever! The Media is not your friend and most of the time is not facts just opinions!

  15. Can’t get out of media day fast enough ray
why don’t you just leave football on a high note
like telling us about banned substances
your a fraud and though you complain about the media they have propped your sorry behind up forj years u
can’t have it both ways chump

  16. You know, if these reporters were genuininely interested in justice they’d go and interview the prosecutors and jury members of the trial 12 years later and ask why they found him and the actual stabbers innocent.

But nope, its all about sensationalism. It’s why two reporters were manipulating that poor mother of one of the deceased last week.

    Vultures is too kind.

He was found Guilty of Obstructing Justice which very well may have lead to a Guilty Charge of Accessory to Murder.

  18. Hate to break it to you Ray but I grew up in the church and God doesn’t care who wins this game. You better give up on the destiny angle and actually get your team prepared because it will take a near perfect game for either team to win.

  19. I think a reporter has the right to ask and I think Ray has the right to refuse to answer.

  20. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if many of his team mates can’t wait for his retirement. His shtick borders on self-parody.

  21. I believe a man truly changed by religion would have come clean by now (and I’d include clearing up what happened even if he had nothing to do with it as coming clean). Then he would be able to speak his mind about it at peace in any situation.
But he hasn’t, and that is why he gets questioned at times he wrongly believes are ‘not the right time’

  22. Its been 12 years and there was no real evidence then and there’s none now. Stop talking about it. If I kept getting asked questions over something that happened 12 years ago that’s not relevant or accurate I would refuse to talk about it too.

    No evidence?

    LOL

  23. Frankly, I am shocked any press had the stones to ask about this in the midst of this coronation for Mr. Lewis. But for those who think it was bad form for someone to bring it up to St. Ray in the middle of “Media Day” because it made someone uncomfortable, tough. Tell that to the Lollar family who have to live every day with the death of a loved one and no justice, other than the money Mr. Lewis paid to make the case go away.

  24. Ray was never acquitted..he copped a plea and testified against his friends in the trial. They were acquitted..Ray’s suit that he was wearing that day still has not been found..

  25. He’s right. Especially since 11 years ago he was in the same place and you media-morons had every chance to ask then….

Or more importantly, do some actual journalism and research the facts in the case and see the truth!!

But no, that doesn’t make for a big headline, biased agenda’s, or being a bigot fanboy of some other team.

  26. If he was asked a question about football I wonder if he would say, I don’t want to talk about that, its God’s time……….

Actually, I wish everyone would talk football and leave all the other stuff alone for just this final week of the season. Lots of time after to talk about all the other stuff.

  27. As a Raven’s fan, I don’t have a problem with the media bring up this story again. We all know who that turned out during the actual game. Can the media fuel this team anymore than it already has been? Are they forgetting the interviews on the field after the last three playoff wins? I’m not guaranteeing a victory, but the media is with every passing low ball move. This team feeds off of it.

If you want the Ravens to lose, favor them, make it easy for them, and praise them with overwhelming success before the actual game is played. Otherwise you’re going to get the same result as the other three playoff games and 2000 ending with a Superbowl victory.

  28. That was 12 years ago and he wasn’t convicted of murder at all. People think that because he took a plea agreement for obstruction of justice that he did it? If he did it he wouldn’t have been able to get that agreement. He didn’t do it. End of story. Let it go. Why on earth would he answer questions about it 12 years later being asked by people that don’t know anything about it. He’s not the only guy in the world to have been accused of something he didn’t do and have the charges reduced later. That happens every day.

What a poor way to respond, Ray. And im a Ravens fan.

    ——————

It’s a football media day. Why would he be expected to talk about chargers he was aquitted of from 12 years ago. Maybe ask him what his defense plans to do Sunday.

  30. no need to discuss it .its OVER!!
let the man get ready to win a super bowl..

  31. The media asking the questions are just looking for Ray to slip up and say something incriminating; that is their job. Most members of that community care nothing about the game, merely just looking for way to plug an interest in the game for their own interest and a storyline for the non-fan to follow. As for Ray, it is obvious he is going to respond in the manner he did as he’s been doing it since the turn of the century. He built his brand around it. If it’s willful ignorance or just plain truth, we will never know. Why is anyone surprised on both sides? People always judge until its their time to face the scrutiny just as people get their panties in a bunch when the media asks difficult questions that have no relevance as to what is happening now. Lets just play the dang game and get ready for the off-season.

  32. The press loves to say the murder case is unsolved. Am I wrong or weren’t the two defendants found innocent because it was self defense and the murder charges against Ray were dropped. I wish the press worked half as hard at their jobs as Ray does at his.

  33. I like Ray Lewis. But would it be too much for him to stop using God as a way to duck out of a question? I know reporters and journalists aren’t always perfect. But it’s a reporter’s job to ask tough questions like the murder case and his alleged use of a banned substance. They are not supposed to be Lewis’ PR tool; that’s the job of the Baltimore Ravens and the NFL.

  34. You know, there was another football player who was acquitted of murder years ago. The country didn’t believe him either.

You are right, though, Ray. This is between you and God. There is no hiding from Him.

  35. Ray Lewis using the Sarah Palin Media playbook. Belittle the person asking the question if you don’t want to answer then ramble on about God until everyone is confused.

  36. It’s God’s time?

That’s odd, I thought it was the NFL’s media day. You are paid by a team in the NFL. That makes it work time.

These comments sound like someone who’s afraid of burning in hell.

  37. Ray, this is GOD. Please tell the truth and stop using my name. I never did like you and never will. That is all.

  38. Ray Lewis using the Barack Obama media playbook. Belittle the person asking the question if you don’t want to answer, then ramble on for 8 minutes about something else until everyone is confused.

  39. It doesn’t matter how many years passed. We treat the man as a god even though that event has several very important pieces to the puzzle missing. Who knows where those pieces are? Ray Lewis. If nothing to hide then tell us…. E.g what happened to the white jacket? Two people were murdered, does it really matter how much time has passed?

  40. First off. Don’t tell us to read the bible …sadly I went to private school from 2nd-12th grade and let me just say. Fuq the bible and that load of crap. It should be burned

  41. The only people he is fooling are those easily fooled the mental lemmings of Raven fandom…pathetic.

He won’t talk about something because he will definitely step in dog doo if he does…
Thank god he is playing just one more game and then he and the ravens can slither back to “Charm City”…. Ain’t America grand…smh

  42. I’d say Lewis should become a politician with all of the lies, but they would dig up way too many skeletons in his closet…literally.
