Having a member of the family as the current or former head coach of the Cowboys appears to be a prerequisite for coaching the team’s tight ends.
The team announced Tuesday that Wes Phillips has been promoted to the tight ends coaching job after spending the last two years as the team’s assistant offensive line coach. Phillips is the son of Texans defensive coordinator and former Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips and he replaces John Garrett, who left his brother Jason’s staff to take a job in Tampa Bay.
Wes Phillips will be replaced as the assistant offensive line coach by Frank Pollack, who was the offensive line coach in Oakland in 2012. It’s a step down, obviously, but with Bill Callahan reportedly set for expanded duties as offensive play caller Pollack will have plenty to do with the blockers. Pollack, who spent six years as a lineman for the 49ers, played for Callahan when Callahan was an assistant at Northern Arizona early in his coaching career.
The Cowboys are still looking for a running backs coach to replace Skip Peete, who landed in Chicago after the Cowboys fired him last month.
