Source: Rob Ryan to Saints “basically a done deal”

Last night, differing (and not necessarily contradictory) reports emerged regarding the status of Rob Ryan as the Saints’ next defensive coordinator.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Saints “plan” to hire Ryan.  Larry Holder of the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported that the Saints will interview Ryan on Friday, a day after they interview Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham.

We confirmed the latter before calling it a night.  Now, we can confirm the former.

Per a league source, Ryan to the Saints is “basically a done deal.”

That said, Ryan to the Rams was “basically a done deal.”  And if we’ve learned anything so far this offseason, it’s that there’s no such thing as a done deal until the deal is done.

  1. Congrats to Rob Ryan and I think this should be an interesting fit. If he can get this D to play well, they’ll be a very dangerous team next yr. On a side note, I believe this took over 5 minutes for him to find a home.

  2. Wish he would’ve been hired as the d coordinator of the Cards instead of Bowels!!! Good hire by the Saints. Thier defense is about as bad as my Cardinals offense right now!!!

  3. I think he is going to do well actually…. Bet he gets the Saints defense to 15 or so in the 1st season..and I’m not a Saints fan….

  4. Has Rob worked anywhere longer than 2 years? Cleveland 2 years then fired. Dallas 2 years then fired. Doesn’t that tell you something? He and his brothers are the two greatest self promoters in the league, but its all talk and no action.

  5. To be fair, while I dislike this hire, he did sort of end up being the fall guy for Jason Garrett last year. Fox example i.e. Jerry Jones specifically cited the Bears game where the real problem was Romo throwing 5 INTs.

My problem with Rob is that he just does too many needlessly exotic things and weird fronts that don’t actually accomplish anything. I hope he’ll be more adaptive to the personnel than Spags was and hopefully we’ll have someone like Dion Jordan to beef up the 3-4 as well.

  6. I hope the Saints steer in another direction after they interview Rob Ryan; he’s over-rated, a slob and a media hound. And that’s just what we know of on the surface. Go elsewhere Sean Payton, go elsewhere for your DC.

  7. Another retread survivor who always finds a way to land on his feet. In my opinion an overrated coach who seems to wear out his welcome pretty fast.

  8. Every year lack of talent is blamed for rob Ryan’s defensive failures when actually it’s his trash game plan and lack of in game adjustments. As a Dallas fan we too were excited for rob Ryan but the truth is he is all talk no bite. The saints and Sean Payton most of all will grow tired of his big mouth and bigger failures and will be gone in two years

  9. I doubt seriously that it is a d”done deal”. On Mike & Mike this morning, Payton said that he will conduct 2-4 interviews. Ryan and Grantham are two of them. He also said he is awaiting permission to talk to two others. Probably Donntell and Tomsula from SF.

  10. I think the Cowboys should have kept him for another year and Garrett should have been allowed to coach his way one more season but alas, Jerry Jones has surpassed Dan Snyder in meddling…

  11. New Bounty System:

Rob Ryan loses a pound for every hard hit

Rob Ryan punches his brother in the face for every injury.

Rob Ryan kicks Buddy in the nuts for every QB taken out of the game.

I 100% approve of this system.

  12. I wish they would have gotten Romo just from the stand point of public relations. I think Ryan is a lot like Greg Williams. On the up side if he can get us back to the middle of the pack on D we should be in NY next year

  13. If true, Saints fans have my condolences. This guy is all circus parade and no circus performance.

  14. Rob-boy had one of the best defenses, personnel-wise, in Dallas but couldn’t do anything. Now one of the worst defenses in the league, saints, are going hire him and expect improvement??? Mr. I’ll have a job in 5 minutes couldn’t even get hired by his twin loud-mouth brother in NY who’s team is in free-fall. Makes you laugh at how good coaches get fired and never get another chance but bad coaches who can sell the b.s. keep getting chance after chance. Rob Ryan didn’t develop an above average defense at any team he was DC for….NONE, zero, nada but his mouth gets him chances. Rexy prolly didn’t want to hire him in NY because Rexy was afraid that Robbie would ruin the good gig Rexy has going there with snowballing the owner.

  15. These rumors are not true Sean Payton head coach of the New Orleans Saints has not made a decision as of yet. He has at least 3 to 4 candidates he are looking at, so Rob Ryan is not the Saints defensive coordinater.

  16. Sean Payton – whom one would think should also be a “source” on this story, said this morning he will be bringing in two or three candidates – including Ryan and “some position coaches (read Ravens or 49ers position coaches) and decide next week. That does not sound like “basically a done deal” to me.

  17. What are the chances that the sources for all these coaching hire “done deals” are the coach’s own agent, who is trying to grease the skids for it to happen?

  18. Adam Schefter was a good reporter on NFL network, but ever since being hired at ESPN..he has been awful; I’m waiting on Jay Glazer to confirm hiring…Sean Payton is interviewing 2-4 candidates and waiting on permission from 2 other teams and will make a decision in a week.

  19. Heh, Gregg Williams gained 50 lbs within 2 years in New Orleans. Rob will double that within one season of consuming gumbo, beignets, and shrimp po’ boy sandwichs! He’ll become a human float for Mardi Gras!

I don’t believe the Saints need a shut down defense just an attacking one to compliment the offense. At this point anyone will be an upgrade over spag”oh hell no”..

Not for or against Spags but God himself couldn’t have did anything with the defensive personnel of the Saints. Terrible defense players.

  21. GQ front cover boy Rob Ryan reminds of Dandy Don Meredith singing,”The party’s over now”. Say goodnight Saints.

  22. Sorry about all u ryan haters but if there is one thing they can do its coach a defense.. it runs in their blood and I guarantee that if rob lands this job his defense will be top 12 barring injury just like dallas went from 31 the previous year to 8th for most of last year.. after most of their starters, 2nd stringers and even some 3rd stringers were injured they ended up at 17 but thats still hell of a lot better than 31 with most of the same parts

I know… it seems they played in Falcon playoff mode all year…wouldnt YOU agree

  24. ugh. HE’S. NOT. GOOD. His highest finishing defense was 19th in the league a few years back.

  25. He has to be the biggest looking slob in the NFL. Lose some (a lot of) weight and get a haircut. While he was on the sideline at Dallas he was an embarrassment to the memory of Tom Landry and the style and grace he had.

But I do have to give him some credit for being able to have any sort of defense at all with all the injuries the Cowboys defense had in 2012.

Given a complete, healthy roster of starters he would probably still have a job.

  26. You can’t get any worse than last year, which was the worst ever. A switch to a 3-4 has to help. I just wish the Giants would bring Spagnuolo back home.

  27. Reporting a source that says “Basically a done deal” means that as far as the source is conserned he feels that “basically it is a done deal.” Doesn’t mean anything other than we know that Rob Ryan has agreed to interview for the position, along with at least one other.

Please advise when he gets a job. This is the longest five minutes of my life.
