Ravens, Linta meet Friday night

Mrs. PFT and yours truly were having dinner at the Capital Grille in Indianapolis when I spotted Ravens V.P. of football administration Pat Moriarty and agent Joe Linta walking in and taking a seat at a nearby booth.

Which meshes with our report from earlier in the day that the first meeting between the Ravens and the representation of quarterback Joe Flacco would be occurring on Friday night or Saturday.

Which now may allow me to write off the entire dinner.

The Ravens and Linta haven’t negotiated since August.  And with the team gambling and losing (by winning the Super Bowl), the time has come to pay the proverbial piper.

For Linta, who repeatedly has said Flacco should be the highest-paid quarterback in the league, the ability to deliver could push him onto the “A” list of all NFL agents.  Failure to do so will give other agents plenty of ammunition to criticize him when recruiting other clients.

If a long-term deal can’t be negotiated, the Ravens will have to decide whether to use the non-exclusive level of the franchise tag or the exclusive level.  As explained earlier in the day, the $6 million difference in 2013 quickly spirals out of control if Flacco decides to assume the injury risk and play on a year-to-year basis.  If the Ravens use the exclusive tag in 2013, Flacco would make more than $80 million in three seasons of being tagged.

  1. Ben roethlisberger7 how dare you “lol” at your master of the north ravens. Bow down before us as you are inferior and beneath us. We are the kings of the north, the AFC and the entire NFL and joe Flacco wears the crown as super bowl MVP. Bow before us and kiss our feet, slave.

Best franchise in the league, OUT.

  2. ravensdominate…

Last time I checked, 6 is better than 2. Good season, but you have a lot of work to do before you get to “dominate” status. Enjoy your short-lived success while you can.

  3. 20 a year seems high. I love Flacco but he’s only worth 17 million a year. They’ll give him 18.5 in order to prevent a QB search and sure up the future.

  4. Too bad you’re so recognizable now, Mike. Back in the day they might have sat at the next table and you could have heard the entire negotiation. Of course back then you probably couldn’t have afforded the restaurant 😉

  5. @ravensdominate Lol at your comment, how dare you? Dude you have issues…..Bow down and kiss your feet?? Your name says it all, right….riiiight.

  6. understand that its about opportunity not ability. Flacco will likely get the highest QB deal in the NFL. Flacco gambled on himself. Flacco won. Ravens will pay the piper. And next year Aaron Rodgers contract is up. He becomes the highest paid and Flacco is back to “his he elite comments”.

Carry on people. Its a business…

  7. Wow 13 “thumbs up” for ravensdominate’s comment already…

Just proves that ravens fans will “thumbs up” any pro ravens comment….

Most likely without even reading or understanding it (I at least hope, too much credit ?)

    what a great fan base.

  8. Can’t wait for 3 years from now when this guy hasn’t done jack squat and all the Ravens fans are crying that he was overpaid!

  9. Both sides know the numbers. Flacco wants to win more, so he knows not to crush the team, but he deserves the huge pay day and he will get it. Everyone will be very happy and prepare for the Road to Jersey… Back to Back.

  10. But he’ll never be an elite quarterback. LOL at the Ravens who will pay him big when he continues to be 2nd tier.

  11. Haha best franchise that lost to Charlie batch , and was a miss played Hail Mary from losing in the playoffs , thanks for clearing that up luckiest franchise this year is more like it

  12. Whatever he gets, come 2015 he’ll be taking a paycut or they’ll lock him out of their facility. That’s what happens when you give Drew Brees money to slightly above-average QBs.

  13. Flacco would make more than $80 million in three seasons of being tagged.
And exactly how many players have been tagged three times…any?

  14. While the Ravens can’t do any better than they did this past year(win the Super Bowl)… I still say they let flacco go.

Watch him struggle to find success with teams much less capable of helping him out.

Meanwhile the ravens can probably get by just fine with someone else because they have built a team NOT dependent on their quarterback.

  15. There is a limit as to what you can pay any one player before the sacrifices you have to make at the other positions to do so becomes too great. For the Ravens sake I hope they know this number to avoid falling into the abyss of mediocrity.

  16. Ben Roethlisberger has thrown as many touchdowns in 2 Super Bowls as Joe Flacco did in the first half (3)

  17. Average to below avg for years. Great for 4 weeks… And never should of beat Denver. Go ahead….flavor of the month.. One and done for yrs to come

  18. He is not worth Brady Peyton Brees Rodgers dough. No way no how.

He won a SB yes but he’s not the undeniable leader of that team that a contract like that would be justified. He might become that but just as of now he is not that guy.

This could be a total bargain if he goes on a 6-8 year SB contention run or is consistently considered a league MVP (which he never has been) but if not he could strap this franchise and kill their cap for the foreseeable future.

Ravens are my 2nd favorite team to my Seahawks and I want them to do well always but just doesn’t seem like a totally good idea to show him that type of money. But I get it that it’s now or never.

  19. Lmao, these Ravens fans have no idea what it’s like to wear the target on their back and be tied down to a “franchise” QB not worth the number on his jersey. The Steelers have punked the Ravens the entire decade and have been to 5 AFC Title Games, 3 Super Bowls & 6 AFC North Titles since 2001. They also beat those big, bad defending Super Bowl Champions with Charlie Batch at QB in 2012. Slaves? Enjoy the off-season, Baltimore. You’re nothing but a Johnny-come-lately Super Bowl winner that won’t even come close to looking like champions for years to come.

  20. Come on steeler fans. Give The Ravens credit. They WON the SB. None of your whining, excuses, sour grape comments, Ravens were lucky comments, are going to change that. I would stick to your steeler sites about your team.

  21. First off, jacktheraven (LOL, are you the teams mascot?) the Steelers/Ravens rivalry is the best ongoing rivalry in football. The Ravens all those years were always 2 steps behind Pittsburgh and it was the Steelers year in and year out that forced Baltimore to get better. The Steelers had a down year and with the Ravens winning the Super Bowl only strengthens the future of this fierce rivalry. The Ravens winning the Super Bowl was the best thing to ever happen to a team like the Steelers. It simply forces us to get better. Thank you! And congrats on winning the SB, we take nothing away from you. I mean, we truly do know what it’s like. 6 Super Bowl victories in franchise history. NFL-tied & league leading 8 appearances. It’s tough to do, but it’s only fair to show you how your fans look when Ravens fans all gather on Steelers articles. Just a common balance and a Steelers fan letting you know that winning the Super Bowl is not foreign to us and we are far from scared of your football team.

  22. More Steelers/Ravens fan arguments. Ridiculous. I hate the Ravens but they are champs and they deserve it. The Steelers are never bowing down to the Ravens though. The 2008 season was the best. We beat Baltimore 3 times and the 3rd was for a trip to the SB. That will likely never happen again; the chances of the teams meeting 3 times is pretty slim, the chances of one team sweeping the other in the regular season isn’t great, and its highly unlikely that they’ll meet again for a trip to go to the SB. Until the Ravens do that, I don’t want o hear about them owning us.

  23. Sorry dude, but the Colts championships don’t count for Baltimore any longer. That’s like the city of Boston counting Braves championships because they used to be the Boston Braves. There’s absolutley no inception about the Ravens whatsoever. Changing your colors from Orange, White and Brown to Purple White and Black doesn’t make you any less of a Brown.

Again, congrats on the Super Bowl, but don’t act like your anywhere near on par with the Steelers as an organization. You simply exist and are built to model us, period.

  24. stainlessstill, just let it go. You’re sounding kind of pathetic, dude. I am neither a Steelers or Ravens fan, and as an outsider, you’re starting to sound like a dude who has had his gf stolen by a rival, and all you have to say about it is “But I taught her how to love! The only reason why your relationship works is because of what she’s learned from me!”

  25. After my above comments, everyone got a little nicer. Good for us. We can all agree that we love football, right?

  26. You know, it’s funny…and I went back and read the article 3 times just to be sure…but nowhere in the article did I see the words “Pittsburgh,” “Steelers” or any other reference to them. Then you read the comments, and it’s all Pittsburgh fans popping off about Flacco.

Just leave us to ourselves, let us bask in the glory of our championship. We don’t have six, like you, in 75+ years, so just let the fans in the little town sandwiched between DC and Philly with its championship team and the chip on its shoulder talk amongst themselves. We’ll leave you to third place…your home now and in the foreseeable future, ok? Thanks.

  27. I have never seen so many people pointlessly argue with another person they dont know, as I do on this site. Get up, get out and go live people, no need to argue over a…game….That youre not playing…

  28. @ac540 This is exactly how I feel. Ravens fans comment unnecessarily on Steelers articles and vice versa. I only find myself commenting once I’m tired of what some are saying. I’m a Steelers fan and have never commented negatively on a Ravens article for no reason. Wish fans on both sides would do the same.

  29. Even the steelers beloved hines ward said…..steelers are in disarray!! I love it….steelers = 3rd (maybe 4th this year) in the AFC North! Dick Lebeau has finally reached senility!!

  30. Steeler fans, time for some trivia. How many championships did the Steelers win in their first 17 years in existence? (Hint: The Steelers didn’t start in the 1970s but in 1933.)

If you compare, you need to compare apples to apples.

  31. @ravenschick. I see the point you’re trying to make. I’m not one of the Steelers fans who goes on and on about championships and what not either. You’re not comparing apples to apples either. Its nearly impossible to compare the two time periods football wise, the Ravens as an expansion team came into the league in much better shape also (not like the Texans who had to be built from scratch), and its just a pointless argument. When it comes to championships it pretty much only matters how many you have. Baltimore’s 2 in this era are impressive as the Steelers 6 are impressive. How many rings you’ve won in the past and how long it took you to earn them has no effect on the future. We should all just move on

  32. Good grief! Why are my fellow Steelers fans on this thread ranting about whether Flacco deserves a big payday or how many trophies and head-to-head wins we have? Just because one lunatic Ravens fan makes an ass of himself on all our threads doesn’t mean our fans need to return the favor. The more you talk the more panicked you sound.

The Steelers have been a dominant team for more than four decades. Congratulate the Ravens and have faith that the Steelers will right the ship and do their talking on the field.

  33. Johnny unitas played for the baltimore colts not the indy colts The championships for the Baltimore colts do for Baltimore. Nothing will change that. Lets see you steeler turds win with cam calling you’re plays, I’ll say this without him you don’t even make it to the 08 Super Bowl. I’m just sayin

  34. As stupid as ravensdominate’s comment is, are you steelers fans any smarter for buying into his foolishness and feeling the need to spew your own stupidity in a Ravens’ related article?

  35. deb you are the best. here’s hoping the steelers and ravens both remain competitive so pro football’s best rivalry keeps going strong. nothing better than meaningful ravens/steelers games. go ravens!

  36. Baltimore World Championships, whether it be by the Colts (who were stolen from us, btw) or the Ravens – to think otherwise is nonsense!! Baltimore 5, Pittsburgh 6, although it took Pittsburgh Much longer to get to their 6 than it did for Baltimore to get to their 5. Just facts stainlessstill, that’s all. All that matters is World Championships, and the Steelers(2) are tied with the Ravens(2), since the Ravens inception – more facts! It makes no sense to dispute what is reality, as you seem to be trying to do. I am all in favor of looking ahead, a future that looks bright for my Ravens; but I don’t ignore history either, which the city of Baltimore can be proud of, whether it is the Colts or the Ravens.

  37. You guys are all a joke the Packers 13 time world champions, most legendary coach who changed the game, one of the last stadiums named after something other than a corporate sponsor, best and most loyal fans, best experience, and soon to have three of the best quarterbacks of all-time (Starr, Favre, and Rodgers) Nuff said!!

  38. I agree with thewassabi, PACKERS are the UnDisputed Kings of the NFL, everyone else is a far second! Thanks for reminding the Steeler fans who only think football existed from1970-1980.

  39. @scoobies05 …

Thank you! You’re right–the rivalry is better when both teams are strong! Can’t wait for next year! Go Steelers!

  40. J”joe fluke” joe isn’t elite”…. I love it! The guy is super bowl MCP! Isn’t that as good as it gets in this league?!?!? Hate on. We’ll just win on… Kiss our feet and our 2012-13 Ring, steelers. aka ghost of superbowls Past….

  41. funniest thing about all this is that it is meaningless. the guys in the headshed could not care less what we think. so for all you squealer fans who think we are about to overpay, the heck with you. and for the ravens fans who are worried about the cap, ozzie really doesn’t care what you think either. this is all a waste of time until the draft which is a waste of time until the preseason which is a waste of time until the season.

to watch you a$$clowns get all worked up over this as if it had any real meaning is even funnier than the thought that your opinion might actually be considered.
