Report: Browns unlikely to sign Steve Breaston

AP

The list of potential landing spots for free-agent wide receiver Steve Breaston appears to have shrunk.

According to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Browns are not expected to sign Breaston, who is expected to meet with AFC North rival Pittsburgh on Thursday.

With special-teams stalwart Josh Cribbs and frequent starter Mohamed Massaquoi slated to be unrestricted free agents, the Browns may need to bolster their wide receiver depth this offseason, and the 29-year-old Breaston seemed a logical candidate to add another veteran presence at a position where Cleveland is young. However, it appears Breaston, released by Kansas City earlier in February, will have to resume his NFL career elsewhere.

The Steelers could have their own depth issues at wide receiver if Mike Wallace departs in free agency. While Breaston isn’t a field-stretching threat in Wallace’s class, Breaston would help strengthen the Steelers’ hand at a key position.

  1. The Browns just realize that they have no chance to sign Breaston, so they spin this to look like it was there decision to pass on him, much like they did with Chip Kelly, RG III, and Alex Smith. The truth is, no one wants to play or coach in Cleveland if they have better options.

  2. Singing breaston would mean the steelers dont *need* to use a high pick on a WR. Sure, they still can. But they would almost have to if they go in to the season with brown, sanders (1 yr left), and cotchery (1 yr left) as their top 3, with no real up and comer behid them.

He’s been effective with haley, and it would reduce our need. Assuming its a 2-3 yr deal/relatively cheap, i would be in favor of it.

  3. Oh NO! We’re not gonna get Steve Breaston?? Browns will be fine w/o Cribbs, MoMass, Chip Kelly, Breaston or Alex Smith.

Better days are ahead Browns fans.

Sure buddy.. Keep telling yourself that rich..
Steve Breaston is terrible, he will fit perfectly on the ever declining Steelers.

  5. Oh come on now, we’ve seen this game been played before – Breaston went to Cleveland for contract leverage so when he gets to Pittsburgh he has a market price to negotiate with. Sorry homers, nobody is signing in Cleveland when they can go to Pittsburgh and play for the guy that made them a star.

And speaking as someone living here in Phoenix for a long time now, and as a guy who gets stuck watching the awful Cardinals anytime I want to actually attend family gatherings Sundays, Breaston was actually a really good player and a fan favorite here playing opposite of Fitzgerald. This is relevent because i’d say Antonio Brown is at this stage in his career a superior player to Fitzgerald – so no, Breaston is not a number 1 like they tried to make him in KC, but he’s fantastic at taking advantage of a defense that doesnt respect him when you need it the most. His value isn’t understood by the run-of-the-mill-office-pool-fantasy-football-player. It is by people who actually watch football.

  6. Are you guys only allowed to use one picture for each player? This has to be the 5th different time I’ve seen this picture in the past week.

  7. I hope it’s not more than a one year deal. I’d wait until after the draft to sign him. Geez, the Browns don’t even want him.

  8. From what the Browns brass seem to be saying they plan on bolstering their reciever depth with the guys already on the team. They’re going for immediate starters in free agency. They already have a team full of guys like Breaston.
